Scarecrow Tribute

  • Here is my tribute for the Master of Fear himself: Jonathan Crane aka the Scarecrow! While this is by far the hardest video I have ever had to make so far, it was really fun to pay tribute to Crane and I hope you enjoy.
    So while I love Scarecrow a lot, I've never been able to call him one of my all time favorite villains. Don't get me wrong, I do think he's an awesome villain. The main problem I have with him is that I've never found Crane to really be that compelling as an actual character. Most of the time he shows up, he just seems like a sadistic bastard who loves to spray people with fear gas and laugh about it. I do like it when they explain that he's doing it to study the psychological effects of fear on people but even that motivation is getting stale to me. And no, I don't like it when they give him a backstory saying he became a villain because he was bullied as a kid, I've never really been able to get into villains with a motivation like that for some reason. The only time I completely understood why Scarecrow does what he does is when I read his New 52 origin story, Cycle of Violence. I truly felt bad for him in that story and I liked it when they adapted it into Gotham (one of the only things that show did right in my opinion). But other than that writers never really seem to explore his actual character that much at all despite him being such a classic and popular villain. I will say that I find every version of him to be at least decent though, especially the Arkham Knight one.
    Next up will be Two Face. However, I am extremely busy at the moment and so production will have to start much later than usual. I hope that once I am done with my personal business I will be able to get that video out sometime this week.
    Scenes: Batman TAS, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Begins, Batman: Gotham Knight, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Batman Unlimited, Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Assault on Arkham, Batman: Arkham Knight, Nightwing and Robin, Injustice 2, Gotham, Batman: Hush
    Song: Scream by Adelitas Way

    This is a great video. :) The Scarecrow has always been my most favourite of Gotham villains, because he is not a brute like so many others, instead he is more intelectually based, along with my other two favourites, the Riddler and the Mad Hatter, which makes him very fascinating, and someone you would love to have a conversation with. :) I've also always loved Halloween and the motif of the Scarecrow, and I'm always thrilled to see a new incarnation of him somewhere, it's amazing that he's been used a lot more in popular media these past few years. :)

      Thank you! I agree that Scarecrow is one of the more intellectual of Batman’s villains especially given the fact that he used to be a college professor. And it’s great that he’s being used more often and more prominently in media.

      @@goblintributemaker2539 Yeah, agreed. :) I really hope we will get a new movie entirely based on the Scarecrow soon, because, while not being not as physically strong, the Scarecrow is actually one of the rogues that did manage to bring Batman to his knees, and the siminarities and the dynamic between them has always been very fascinating. :) it could be a very good psychological horror movie :) it's a shame that Nolan's Scarecrow was just a secondary villain, if they actually used his potential and more of C.Murphy's brilliant acting, he would be so much better that Ra's al Ghul. :)

      @@shadowsteed15 I always wanted a Batman movie with Scarecrow as the main villain too. If that happens, I hope his portrayal is based on his version in Arkham Knight as I liked how they had him be a more calculating mastermind in that game as well as how successful he was. While it is annoying how Scarecrow only had a minor role in the Dark Knight trilogy, I absolutely loved Cillian Murphy's performance and I thought he did a great job.

      Scarecrow has been my favourite batman villain ever since I was a child. I remember that after I had read the comics and learned about his past I finally managed to ignore the mean comments I got from my classmates and I focused on learning and being a better person. Now I'm in college and he's still my number one. I would really like to see a movie about him and his origins.

Unfortunately I have to tell you that Penguin will never appear on this channel. I cannot do tributes for villains like Joker and Lex Luthor who have too much screen-time because it would be far too much work for me and Penguin is one of them, a large part due to his appearances on Gotham. In fact, even trying to make a tribute for his Gotham version alone would be too difficult for me. It is very sad especially since I know he is your favorite but there is not much I can do. I actually did announce which Batman villains I will be covering in my Lady Arkham tribute which was supposed to be the introduction to this series for Batman villains and I suggest you check it out ;)

  • @Xehanort10
    @Xehanort10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    IMO Scarecrow's a lot more sadistic and evil than Joker. Joker may make people laugh themselves to death or sometimes torture and kill them but people have been driven permanently insane by Scarecrow's fear gas and toxin. Spending the rest of your life insane being tormented by hallucinations of your worst fears would be a fate worse than death. Some versions of Crane enjoy every minute of what his gas does to people and others are cold and clinical and feel nothing for breaking people's minds just seeing it as research into the nature of fear.

    • @goblintributemaker2539
      @goblintributemaker2539  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting perspective. I still find Joker to be more evil though because he hurts and kills people specifically to cause them pain while most versions of Crane claim to do it for scientific purposes. It’s also really gruesome to laugh yourself to death and while it’s horrible living in a nightmare too, most versions of fear gas aren’t actually show to be permanent, at least to my memory.

    Ah yes Crane, I have talked about (and still will in the future) him more than enough so I'll keep it breaf. Personally though I never understand that Scarecrow stories are only far and few out there. There ridicoulously repetitive, but I'll still take them over the abondence of bad Batman comics of the New 52 and Rebirth. Yeah I get that his old origin wasn't the most compelling, but considering the subject of bullying, it can really mess you up as time goes by. Personally I also never got why misstress of fear is suppost to be his greatest storie, have you read the ending of that thing. Still it's sad that nobody has tried to do another sympithatic take on Crane besides the origin we got in the New 52, heck that continuety forgot about that as well. It's kinda sad though how the Scarecrow has come and gone over the years, he's always risen up from the bottom, only to be falling down soon after. Still he'll always be my favourite Bat-rouge, even if time isn't always as good to him, or when they do more garbagde like abslute terror.
    Anyways you good job, truely a faithfull (if not gimmicky song choice for Crane).

    • @goblintributemaker2539
      @goblintributemaker2539  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! The main reason why I don't really like the "getting bullied" origin for Crane is because most of the time he seems too whiny when he has it and it's never really been explored that much. The closest time it has been was in Mistress of Fear. I feel the same way with you about that story. I think it's an okay story but Cycle of Violence is superior and should be the definite take on Scarecrow just like the Heart of Ice origin is now the definite take on Mr. Freeze. I don't know about Cycle of Violence being forgotten because it was used in Gotham and hopefully will be adapted into other works of media too. I honestly think Scarecrow is more popular than ever at least among fans but I've never really liked his fans that much, with you being one of the few exceptions. Most Scarecrow fans only like Crane because they love his design or they love horror. You're one of the only ones that understand that Crane actually has a huge amount of potential to be used as a more tragic and sympathetic character. Honestly, I feel like he could be as sympathetic as the likes of Two Face and Mr. Freeze if only he was written better and his motivations for doing what he does was explored more.
      I don't know about my song choice for Crane being gimmicky, I actually feel like the lyrics explain his motivations and goal pretty well. If I didn't think that I wouldn't have even made a tribute for him since like I told you before, I only make tributes for villains I have very fitting songs for. I personally think it's more fitting for him than the songs a lot of other music video makers use for him which is usually some random song that has to do with fear or horror.

    • @tayojones9460
      @tayojones9460 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well he is the master of fear, do it is easy for someone to choose songs that relate to fear. And crane never came off whiny to me (unlike Vickie from Telltale). Still the being bullied origin is overused. Almost as much as abusive childhood.

    • @goblintributemaker2539
      @goblintributemaker2539  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tayojones9460 I think I remember Crane being kind of whiny in the story Terror(a terrible Scarecrow story AND Hugo Strange story) due to him always complaining about how his bullies mistreated him although I can't think of any other specific examples (and in Vicki's defense although I agree that she was pretty whiny and annoying at times she did genuinely suffer a lot in her life so I feel it was at least kind of understandable unlike a lot of the whiny MCU villains like Vulture, Killmonger, and Mysterio). Both those villain backstories are overused but I still vastly prefer the abusive childhood origin because I personally find it to be much more believable in causing a person to go insane and at least they usually switch it up from time to time. For example, Two Face's abusive childhood is completely different from Green Goblin's. If I'm being honest I think the only time I really enjoyed the being bullied origin was when they used it for Electro in Spiderman the New Animated series and it was probably because they built it up so much.

    • @armiproductions5680
      @armiproductions5680 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goblintributemaker2539 I meant that the New 52 just kinda had him hang around and not really do anything segnifigant of note to me. They should've actually killed him off in Cycle of Violence when his house exploded and he sorta redeamed himself by saving that one kid he had in his basement. I have had many interactions with "those" kinds of Scarecrow fans, but I usually just ignore them though since they have the same reason of liking Crane as why people like the MCU Thanos. Those are also the people that used the same song for Scarecrow a thousant times, but "the Scarecrow doesn't make you scared and lonely" or some other nonsense that doesn't make any sense.

    • @tayojones9460
      @tayojones9460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they like those songs, that's their choice. And I do not think killing crane in cycle of violence would be a,good idea. They just need to keep it in mind when writing crane. Much better than writing another fucking Joker story.

  • @tayojones9460
    @tayojones9460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ironic. You don't like it when crane is portrayed as pure evil yet you love the version from AK, the most evil version of Crane ever created. Not every villain needs to be sympathetic.
    I love pure evil villains, as long as I can understand the motives and if they are at least entertaining. AKU is a great example. He is pure evil, and he knows it. He was very entertaining and fun to watch, but also loathsome and vile and made you want to see Jack kick his Arse. Perfect villain.
    But back to crane. I like Scraecrow, but most of his stories are very predictable. He sprays someone with fear gas, they overcome their fear and Crane is defeated. Rinse and repeat. I did read Cycle of violence and I loved it. It made Crane sympathetic and explained his obsession with fear. It would be nice if more writers explored crane more as a character who is slightly tragic but still dangerous. Gregg Hurwitz pull it off very we with cycle of violence.
    Anyway, great tribute Goblin Maker

    • @goblintributemaker2539
      @goblintributemaker2539  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You basically said almost everything I was trying to say. I want him to be depicted more as a tragic but still dangerous villain too. As for the AK version being my favorite, not a single version of him outside comics is sympathetic in any way other than the version in Gotham of all things. So it’s not like I had much to choose from which kind of proves my point. It’s the reason why I just chose the version that was the most dangerous and menacing. Don’t get me wrong, I love pure evil villains too since they can be a lot of fun and Crane is no exception. I just feel like they really need to switch up how he is portrayed every once in a while and actually explore his character more often. Since Cycle of Violence is such a recent story and was even used in Gotham, I hope it sets a trend for future Scarecrow stories as well as his media portrayals. It’s probably my favorite use of the character in his entire history even though it’s not perfect. Honestly, if Crane was portrayed like he was in that story more often he would almost definitely be one of my favorite villains.
