    Darwin and Snuggles, congratulations on 10 years of marriage! It seems like a rare thing for couples to stay together for any length of time and to know each other from grade school, dating in high school, and then getting married... Bravo to both of you!

    The history you have together with your wife and calling your your best friend is remarkable and very rare in this world. Always remember to cherish each other (which I’m sure you do). Life is hard and it’s so much better with a real partner at your side. Hike on 👟

    In regards to hiking pace, one of the most important things I learned in NOLS was a twelve hour pace. Set the pace in which you can hike a twelve hour day, usually that is fairly slow and good for groups, but also good for energy conservation. Just a bit I learned and thought I'd share. Awesome videos, I always appreciate and enjoy them.

      Darwin onthetrail, I'll be bicycle touring, but I found hikers use some of the same gear... I'll probably hike a bit, but pedaling primarily.

    Having knee troubles myself, what are some things you have done to help with pain and/or other knee issues before you hike and while you're on the trail? Also congrats to you and snuggles on 10 years!

    • @orion_13
      @orion_13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can suggest rolling out your leg muscles before and after your hike every day. I learned this technique from EarlyRiser 71 and it works well for me. I have a rare muscle condition that causes my muscles to contract all the time so I have issues with legs and knees too. I've torn the cartilage in my right knee in 1986 and I fell and messed up my left knee in 2009 so I have issues with them too.

    Hey Darwin love your videos! Can you tell us about blisters, what you do to prevent them and if you get one how do you treat it?
    I did a 6 day walk on road and in the bush (I'm in Australia so perhaps forest to you) with a group of people in 2015 Foot Blisters where the number one issue for most of the hikers. Love too know your thoughts.

    To the clothes question, if you follow Early Riser 71 at all you will notice that he wears a sub $20 walmart Russell brand shirt. It is a sports shirt like Darwin states, dry wicking and all. I don't think it is antibacterial though. I own a few of these shirts and I can say they are really comfortable but I haven't completed any distance hikes with them. They are lightweight and compact very well. So you don't "have to" purchase "expensive" to get effective clothing for the trail, as ER is proving. Just some extra opinion.

    I'm 15 now and I'm hoping to do a thru hike in 2019/2020, but don't particularly like the company of drunk people all the time. How intrusive is the whole party scene on the AT? Is it easy to avoid?

  • @Ureyeuh

    Hey fellow Hoosier!
    This is somewhat of a personal questions, but whenever you became ill from that tick bite, how did you cover your medical expenses? Was that money saved up? Was it waived? Did you have insurance? I'm asking because I know most people leave their jobs to do the trail, and so they typically do not have any insurance.

  • @hikingfive-oh9169
    @hikingfive-oh9169 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Darwin....I know you've done a piece on trail etiquette in the past but this might be somewhat different. In this Q&A, you said you aren't really "supposed" to talk about religion on the trail. And, I've heard thru-hikers dont shake hands on the trail (cooties and all) but maybe a little more on some of the unwritten rules and etiquette of the trail. Maybe the ones that dont necessarily come to mind right off but the ones you say "yeah, that's kind of a thing on the trail" when someone mentions it. Thanks

  • @acderath
    @acderath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So you may have answered this in the past, but I'm new to your channel. What do you guys do when not hiking? What kind of jobs do you do in order to build up the money needed for your next trip? Do you have careers or just get odd jobs that are easy to walk away from when you go off on your long trips?

    • @LeonidasontheTrail
      @LeonidasontheTrail 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was answered a couple of videos ago, maybe someone can comment on the exact Q&A. Short answer: They live minimally and save what they make.

    • @orion_13
      @orion_13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Darwin works for an outfitters store. Like Leonidas said, he commented on this very issue about two QandA sessions ago. If I can find it easily I will post a link.

    • @acderath
      @acderath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Like I mentioned I just found this channel and I'm working through the video library. I'll go back and watch more Q&A's I think I've watched this one and one previous so far.

    • @acderath
      @acderath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I figured they saved what they make and live minimally. But regardless it is rare to find a job that you can easily take 6 months off from and still have a job to come back to, which is why I was curious. I'd love to someday do a thru hike but I will likely have to wait until retirement. 2 kids and a wife and running a business has me pretty well locked down at the moment (not a complaint, my life has been awesome so far).

    • @orion_13
      @orion_13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is fortunate that his job he has now is with like minded individuals and see the benefit of giving employees time off. He doesn't get paid vacation time for it but his current job is there when he returns. He stated that it wasn't case at previous jobs.

    I saw the woman who hiked the AT and is now hiking the PCT who is paralyzed in her legs from Lupus. Do you have any advice for hiking with a chronic inflammatory disease or really bad arthritis?
