Lyrics
(Wo-o-o-o! Wo-o-o-o! Wooo!)
Woman hold her head and cry,
'Cause her son had been shot down in the street and died
From a stray bullet.
Woman hold her head and cry;
Explaining to her was a passerby
Who saw the woman cry (cry)
Wondering how can she work it out,
Now she knows that the wages of sin is death, yeah!
Gift of Jah is life. (life)
She cried: Ah-um, I - I know!
"Johnny was a good man," I - I know! (never did a thing wrong)
"Johnny was a good, good, good, good, good, good, good, good,
good, good, good man", (Johnny was good man)
she cried - she crie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ied!
Wo-ooh! Woman hold her head and cry,
As her son had been shot down in the street and died
Just because of the system. (system)
Woman hold her head and cry;
Comforting her I was passing by.
She complained, then she cry:
Oh-ooh-wo-ah, cry (ah-ah), yeah, I know now (ah-ah),
no I know, I know now: (Johnny was a good man)
Said I know, mm-mm-mm-mm-mm. (Never did a thing wrong)
Ah! Ah! (Johnny was a good man)
Can a woman tender care, she cried, (Never did a thing wrong)
Cease towards the child she bear? (Johnny was a good man)
Wo-ho-ho-ooh! Woman cry, woman - (Never did a thing wrong)
She cried, wo-oh! She cried, yeah! (Johnny was a good man)
Can a woman tender care
Cease towards the child she bear? (Never did a thing wrong)
Wo-now, cry! (Johnny was a good man)

I maintain to this day that The Wailers has to be one of the greatest collectives ever. Magnificent musicians
This is such an awesome version of this song. The slower tempo lends itself to the sorrowful story being told. I played the album version for my kids (8&9) yesterday and was choking up explaining what it was about and why Bob was such an important messenger of peace and equality for the world. Big up Bob Marley
when he said "someone is guilty" it hit different
I did know Bob and his🇯🇲family, from 1980, and this song is an exception to the rule.
I recall first time examining this 🚩tune, and I adore it to this day. It is the theme song to our feelings💦 about, a loss of life, un🎯 necessarily. I love his sentiment, from the album, whe he seh, “can a woman tend to care, she still wants the child she bear.”💜👈🏽🙏🏾
I've never heard Johnny Was with this tempo and sorrowful vibe. I thought I knew everything about this song
My first time hearing this version too! So good!
As is I .. August 2023 ✌️🇹🇿
We all think that we know everything about Bob but he will always surprise you. Have you noticed that no two concerts are the same with Bob improvising with perfect timing. This is no ordinary artist.

One of his comments was that there should be no rush, rush to his songs…thanks this song shows it beautifully, we need the depth that is peaceful and enlightening in music
Just had started high school when I first heard this and it stayed with me forever, touched my soul :-)

Johnny Was
A mulher coloca a mão na cabeça e chora
Porque seu filho foi baleado nas ruas e morreu
Por uma bala perdida
A mulher coloca a mão na cabeça e chora
Explica para ela era um passante
Quem viu a mulher chorar
Querendo saber como ela pode trabalhar fora
Agora ela sabe que o salário do pecado é a morte
O dom de Deus é a vida
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Johnny era um bom homem
Oh Yeah
A mulher coloca a mão na cabeça e chora
Porque seu filho foi baleado nas ruas e morreu
por causa do sistema
A mulher coloca a mão na cabeça e chora
Confortante dela eu estava passando por ali
E vi a mulher chorar
Ela chora, oh, oh, oh, oh
Johnny era um bom homem
Nunca fez uma coisa errada
presa abaixo
Johnny saiu em um sábado à noite
Nunca machucou ninguém, nunca começou uma briga no salão
Johnny nunca fez nada de errado
Nunca machucou ninguém, nunca machucou ninguém
Johnny era um bom homem
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny ...
Johnny era um bom homem
(Repeti)
Johnny.
Johnny Was
Woman hold her head and cry
Cause her son had been shot down in the street and died
From a stray bullet
Woman hold her head and cry
Accompanying her was a passer-by
Who saw the woman cry
Wondering can she work it out
Now she knows that the wages of sin is death
The gift of God is life
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Johnny was a good man
oh yeah
Woman hold her head and cry
Cause her son had been shot down in the street and died
Just because of the system
Woman hold her head and cry
Comforting her I was passing by
And I saw the woman cry
She cried, oh, oh, oh, oh
Johnny was a good man
Never did a thing wrong
Take it down
Johnny went out on a Saturday night
Never hurt anybody never started no bar room fight
Johnny never did nobody no wrong
Never hurt anybody never hurt anybody
Johnny was a good man
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...
Johnny was a good man
(Repeat)
In a top floor flat in the middle of the night
There's a man with rifle and Johnny in his sight,
I said oh no, we can't let that kind of thing happen here no more
Oh no
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...
A single shot rings out in a Belfast night and I said oh
Johnny was a good man
Can a woman's tender care
Cease towards the child she bears
Johnny (Repeat)
So attractive,, Rasafari..
