This song is my favorite By Bob. It has so much meaning for me. My little nephew was shot and killed down in the streets of Los Angeles. And a brakes my heart to even talk about it but. This song is a great song. By a great man. My sister has never been the same. He was 12 years old and passed on 6-21-08. Rest in PEACE Albert Garcia. I love you papa MUAH.

I was 15 when i first heard that song. It did not hold any significant meaning to me at that. As i grow and reach maturity ages that is when i was able to comprehend what bob marley was saying: a woman's love for a child tjat she brought in this world will never stop. The baby maybe dead but the love for that baby is still in the mother's heart. GREAT BOB MARLEY! RIP!!

What a beautiful song this is and is one of my all time favorites - I was very very fortunate to see him play live and he was a beautiful human being and star- very rare in the entertainment world but Bob was of the greatest artists - so much respect!

I've just come across this video of the live performance of 'Johnny Was' the title is right it's Rare, performed in 1976, posted in 2010 & I'm just finding it in 2019, what a blessed day. Now this here is where the 'I Threes' got their reputation from, pure 'bliss' I've got on loop, just to listen to them.
Yep, it's now late 2020 and I've never heard this before live. Been a fan of Bob's music since I was about 10, when he died and was in the news. I'm now 51. Stunning performance from a lovely man, just reading his mum's autobiography and learning about him as a boy. ❤️

It was written about a real person called Johnny, who was shot by the police in Trench Town, his blood soaked shirt was brandished in angry protest at police brutality for some time afterwards by local people wanting justice.
