  • Loomian Legacy's level cap is way higher than any gym trainer so it's less of an issue but the fact that they implemented that extremely strong Samarine is my main point.
    Doodle world just has a few fights where some trainers have doodles that are straight up higher level than your level cap which makes no sense.

    Yeah, IMO having a built-in difficulty OPTION to make the game more difficult for veterans is great, but the default difficulty for a game like pokemon should be tuned to the kids and casual gamers in the audience-one of the things the main series official pokemon games do REALLY well. Yes, a kids game often will have very little inherent challenge for veteran players who dig into the mechanics, but self-imposed challenges or a “hard mode” setting in a menu can easily fix that, where a kid or casual gamer may find a hard game impossible and not have the knowhow to change the difficulty to an easier difficulty or the humility to admit they would have more fun doing so.
    They don’t have to do things exactly the same as main series pokemon, but that general understanding that the kids and casuals are the most important audience for a game like this, NOT the veteran gamers, competitive battle junkies, and tryhards constantly complaining in chat is VITAL to making a game as broadly appealing as Pokemon.

      isn't the difficulty option you just building a strong team?

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Devilspade It can be if you (1) know what constitutes a strong team and (2) have the self-discipline to keep yourself to a self-imposed challenge. But a lot of casual players don’t have that systems knowledge, so will be stuck at essentially the “default” difficulty, whatever that is, a lot of tryhards don’t have that self-control and will just optimize the fun out of a pokemon game at its intended kid-friendly difficulty level, hence why a harder OPTION for them is still nice. And a lot of kids-ie the series’ primary audience-have neither.
      GameFreak actually did experiment with a real difficulty selection in the main series…I forget if it was B&W or B2W2, but a gen 5 game for sure…but hid it in an overly complicated way that meant the people who actually might have liked them either never discovered it or only discovered it after they beat the game-and Pokemon gamers are often too sentimental to reset, even if they’d have enjoyed a second, harder (or easier) playthru.

    game developers also need to learn harder does not just mean making enemies hit harder and soak up damage like a sponge, but instead need make the AI tougher and more challenging, not just make it have more health

    • @jackzicrosky
      @jackzicrosky  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's exactly my point. It's a lot easier to make big number go bigger but it's more fun when the game is an actually challenge towards your skill like if you have to use type specific monsters, or use something other than ranged moves, stuff that makes you use all the game mechanics.

    I’d rather difficulty exist in a way that challenges my mind. A similar situation applies to Fire Emblem (even if you didn’t refer to it in your video). Fire Emblem can fall into a similar pitfall where the difficulty is just “more and stronger enemies”.
    Where instead maybe make the game more difficult by increasing enemy variety or positioning or maybe giving the enemies more skills. Increasing the stats significantly or just spamming enemies isn’t difficult; it’s just tedious. If you’re gonna make it harder, then make it fun too.

    • @jackzicrosky
      @jackzicrosky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly!
      It's the difference between a luck issue and a skill issue.
      I can keep throwing myself at a trainer over and over again while being at the level cap perfectly fine, but I won't get any satisfaction from it.
      I'd rather have an enemy with an actually well developed team, or even a really weak team so I could come back later with a handicap (IE: Nuzlockes, typelocks etc.)
      having them be OP as hell and just eating all my hits and one shotting my team isn't fun no matter what.

    This a really interesting topic that is very niche. I do think, majority (about 80% of doodle world players) are people that play all the time and the other 20% are newer players. I think wish_z is more worried about the longer playing or returning players more than the newer and this makes it a hard decision. I do agree with what you said involving how Pokémon is basically “do whatever you want” but overall could video and cool topic. Dropped a like to show appreciation ❤

    I think modular difficulty is a great solution.
    Look at Dragon Quest 11 optional difficulty options, or the Heat system of Hades, where you can tweak different aspects of the game to make it exactly as challenging as you want.

    When the biggest complaint older Pokémon fans give is that the games are too easy and that there's no difficulty settings to make it more appeal to them.
    Yet all these indie Mon games respond to that with a harder difficulty.
    You just can't have both.

    • @jackzicrosky
      @jackzicrosky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can have both, it's called a difficulty setting. Many many games have one.
      Also my main point was about the level cap which is a stupid mechanic especially when the level cap you get is lower than some of your opponents.
      I just wanted to do a casual playthrough to get a feel for the game, but after seeing how BS it is I doubt I'll be coming back for a nuzlocke run.

    • @Tobunari
      @Tobunari ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackzicrosky How many of those are Monster collecting games?
      As far as the level cap goes, that's an RPG for you. They want you to be strong enough to complete it, but not allow you to steamroll it. Because where are they going to address the difficulty issue people complain Pokémon has if they don't make it so their their game sticks it to GameFreak's methods of non-difficulty?

    • @jackzicrosky
      @jackzicrosky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tobunari you've clearly never played a romhack lmao. Pokemon Unbound is like the most popular one and it has a difficulty setting.
      You completely ignored my point about the level cap being lower than some trainers. That's not "difficult" that's just rigged. Also about your previous point, BDSP was very difficult at least in the elite 4 and people talked about that, but they did it in the right way. Not with arbitrary level caps built into the game, but higher stats on Cynthia's team, held items on her pokemon, stuff like that. Not just making your level cap lower than the opponents.
      The problem isn't JUST "game hard me no likey". It's "wow these mons are damage sponges and deal way more damage to me than I can to them regardless of type matchups and I have to just throw myself at them over and over again hoping for the right rolls to win the fight". To me that's not fun, that's just a waste of time.

  • @W0lfMan26
    @W0lfMan26 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah. Idk man. I want pokemon clones to be harder. Pokemon itself is easy. Certain challenge runs have also proven some pokemon like pidgey and weedle can't solo the game which detracts from "using any mon." I've not played these games but you never explained to me why these games are hard besides level cap.

    • @jackzicrosky
      @jackzicrosky  ปีที่แล้ว

      pokemon is beatable with pidgey and weedle lmao. (just look up "can you beat pokemon with (instert pokemon here)")
      The level cap is what makes it hard. Some trainers straight up have mons that are OVER YOUR LEVEL CAP. I don't understand what people are having trouble with...
      That's my only complaint I'm mentioning in this video. There's other things I'll get into in my next video I mentioned where I'll review DW but for now in this video all I'm focusing on is the main thing that annoyed me which was the level cap.
      I don't mind having a bit of a challenge, but it doesn't make sense to me when I have to beat a trainer that has multiple mons that are literally just straight up ABOVE my level and there's nothing I can do about it.

    • @W0lfMan26
      @W0lfMan26 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @jackzicrosky please do. Without playing it myself, your explanation fell short. Second, pidgey w/o items is possible weedle wasn't in red/blue. My primary critique is that you didn't explain how it was unfair. It sounds like from your comment that the gym affects your level cap, and i assumed that it was a hard, unchanging level cap like in pkm. Did both of the recent games have level caps that changed?

    I agree! Games shouldn't have a high skill floor by default. The player should have options to make it harder or the creativity to challenge themselves, rather than the devs forcing incredible difficulty on all players.
