    Thank you so much for your incredibly well informed videos. I'm planning on trying my hand at making some small things out of HDPE myself.
    I've collected a bunch of bottle caps, and managed to sort the ones with the '2' in the triangle - but I've also found some which have the letter 'B' in a triangle. I'm in the UK too, I imagine you've come across these as well?
    Pepsi are so good at marking their regular black caps with a '2' but why not their red and gold ones????!!! So frustrating.

    • @BrothersMake
      @BrothersMake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment! we have come across the ones with the ‘B’ also. It’s very hard to tell what these are as they seems very similar to HDPE ♻️2 but could well be LDPE ♻️4. We never take the risk and mix different grades together. It is very frustrating when you have to put caps in the recycling bin because they aren’t well marked but it’s better to be safe than to risk ruining a whole batch of plastic!
      Good luck!

    To remove labels easily, fill the bottle with the hottest water you have and it softens the adhesive and often removes most of the adhesive with the label. I do this mainly with milk jugs and shampoo bottles as it cleans them as well as removing the labels.
    To remove any residuals of anything from a jug or container like dried milk or laundry soap, pour a cup of play sand and or pea gravel in the jug with the hottest water you have and shake it. You can add soap if you want.
    To remove stuff from lids, fill a five gallon bucket with the hottest water you have and get a drill and a paint stirring attachment and go to town. Add soap if needed. Rinse and repeat.
    Hope this helps someone.

I'd like to see/hear a little bit more about how you setup the people to collect for you? For example the office buildings that you said were saving tops for you. Who did you need to talk to to get that started? Here in Portland Oregon we have The Rooster and also Nextdoor. I've had a tiny bit of luck with placing an ad on The Rooster asking for people to save their HDPE for me.

With the office buildings and cafe’s we usually get contacted by them to see if we are interested in taking their lids. We use Facebook a lot and post in a lot of zero waste and eco groups and we get a lot of interest from there. Hope hay helps!

    I believe that by washing the plastic in a washing machine you do end up leaking some microplastics into the water system. I don't know exactly how to get around this though. I recently read a research paper about using recycled plastic for 3D printing (my long term goal) and it sounded like they were using an ethanol soak and letting it evaporate. Maybe even just rinsing and water and letting evaporate would be better? Takes a while though. I'm planning to shred first before trying this method also. Thanks for your insights and efforts on this frontier.

    I have a question. Would using a top loader washing machine for washing the plastic be a bad idea? They have that spinning thing in the middle that side loaders don’t have, and I wonder if that makes it not safe for the washing machine.

    What do you guys do with the bottles that you take the caps from?

    • @BrothersMake
      @BrothersMake  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don’t buy plastic bottles ourselves. The caps are donated from others

    How do you dry the lids and stuff? Also what if there isn't a triangle with the number in it?

    • @BrothersMake
      @BrothersMake  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either just in the sun, or drip-dry 👍🏽 if there’s no visible resin identification code, we done use it.

    Are you able to mix LDPE with HDPE for melts?

    • @BrothersMake
      @BrothersMake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don’t tend to but have tried melting LDPE and it works very similar so in theory it might work

    Cute little shelf! We just sorted through all our reds and greens of collected tabs from the beach and we were shocked to see how little of them actually were labeled (maybe 1/5th 😱). Some of them pretty much looked and felt like HDPE...so my questions is: do u only recycle the clearly labeled ones or do to also take a guess (I guess u must be pretty good at detecting different plastics by now with all ur experience). Or is the danger of contaminating the batch too high?
    Thanks a bunch,

      @BrothersMake  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's such a pain isn't it! We actually only recycle them if they're clearly marked because as you say, we wouldn't want to contaminate the batch and therefore make that new product non-recyclable. There are a few ways out there of detecting them, check out our recent FAQ video where we go into this topic in a little more detail 😀

    How do you get the wax seals out of bottle caps?

    Are there other ways the kids are marked? I have looked under every lid an plastic bottle in my entire house an have only found 1 bottle with the 2 inside of the triangle. Please help me.

    • @BrothersMake
      @BrothersMake  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe we’re lucky in the UK, about 80% of our lids are marked. You can tell them apart using a simple design test - this can be done using water of different levels of salinity. We want to do a video on this one day

    • @BrothersMake

      In the UK milk bottles and the bottle lids are both HDPE. But we never use anything that isn't clearly marked.
