i always like the way guitars look better before they sand stain back and try and get fancy. Most i think look better with just a few coats of stain and then clear.
I'm guessing alcohol based stain not water based dye? I have some water based stain but I'm not sure it goes on as smooth as what you are accomplishing here. I know experience also play a big part. You make it look so easy. Some videos show people putting on 10+ coats with tons of sanding in between to get the grain to pop but you are nailing it here very quickly and efficiently.
+Quipstiley Its an analine dye they use. The reason for the stain + sanding, the original color will soak into the figuring more than the open grain, so you typically use a dark color (brown with red or purple, black with blue, purple with blue, etc) then you apply the lighter color over top to get that extreme contrast. This top is quite exceptional, and does not require the multiple layers, but they still do use that technique themselves on certain colors.
I've heard they use TransFast and/or TransTint, but I can't confirm that. Both are great stains though. You can get them a lot of places online (Amazon, eBay, other online retailers, etc.)

Matt Terrell well I've seen some videos where the private shock team is spreading the paint on the guitars with a napkin. And some where they are spraying it on. I wonder why they do either one, for possibly specific reasons?
Lotsa money for glorified furniture. You could buy a set of bedroom furniture for what that guitar will retail for. Is it beautiful? Of course. Will it play well? Depends on the player.

Wood stain don't need several coats, if using the right stain, in one coat you saturate the grain then wipe any excess. If the color isn't correct after this, you don't use the right stain and need to adjust the stain. It's not good to let thick coat of stain on a wood surface and putting several coats isn't the way to work. In other video we see sanding over a stained surface to make it lighter; thats not the correct way, you need to stain the entire surface light then do shading where you need deeper color. With quality wood stain it will not hide the wood grain.

Stains are pigmented with large particles that sit on top of the wood and cover the grain to a degree, whereas dyes use colorants that are very small and penetrate the wood more, allowing the grain to show through more. With dyes, you can apply several coats while sanding between, which lightens the more cross grain areas and darkens the more end grain areas giving increased contrast and accentuating the figuring.
That quilt is so deep you could get lost in it. Beautiful.

Nah, this is a quilted maple. Flamed maple has horizontal stripes across the grain :)
