@DanielPeppers You hit the nail on the head. I own 4 seasons of a show digitally on Funimation. I specifically bought the blu-ray copy brand new so that the digital code would be unused so that I could always have a digital copy that I could access any time. Crunchyroll/Funimation waving this off as "well of course you already have the blu-ray, so the digital copy was just a fun perk" is totally not okay. I'm really wanting to find out the best way to voice my displeasure about this because this whole situation really doesn't feel right.

The way I do it is really simple, here we go :
IF I want to read a series, I check it out online, more than likely illegaly.
If I love it, and there is a physical release, I get it to support the author.
If not, well too bad I'm not buying it digitally, since you don't really own it.
PRINT IT IF YOU WANT US TO BUY IT

I love owning physical books. But…. I live in a one bedroom apartment, so I don’t have the space to buy physical copies of EVERY book series that I like. That is why I do buy digital copies of books. If a book/book series means a lot to me (and the series doesn’t consist of a TON of volumes), then yeah - I will buy it physically. But… if not - then I will buy it digitally… The idea that a company can just say “Yeah - I know you spent a ton of money to own this digital book series, but you didn’t REALLY own it” is very scary…. Crunchyroll is setting a BAD precedent with this choice to not honor the digital purchases made on Funimation….

100% agree and I think the reasoning and the Pros of Digital is great ( space, having it all on an IPad, etc.) but I think this type of thing is really bad for owning digital in the long run and a big company doing this is wild to me

What's scary is that CrunchyRoll now owns RightStuff Anime, so they have a large part of the community's market share. They even have a hand in conventions and voice actors and dipped their hands in supporting independent projects. This trajectory mirrors Netflix after Blockbuster went out of business, and now we're seeing how that is going. I bought the Stone Ocean anime on Blu-ray because I don't trust Netflix to keep it on their platform forever. The only things that will keep CR from getting total control are supporting local bookstores, buying anime DVDs/blu-rays, and posting videos about the physical media hobby. Your Channel, The Omnibus Collector, Cohleen Manga Recs, and others help.
Anime Conventions came about from collectors and enthusiasts wanting to share media, and we need to start doing panels about this to keep the heart of the community in the know. Many community leaders attend these conventions, and getting VAs, publishers, and fans together might create a better solution. Overall, please keep doing what you're doing; it will help keep this community alive and well.

Yeah sucks but I not paying out the ass for something either. Example. I pay 8 something for assassin's creed unity currently on sale on Xbox. After taxes, it is 12 dollars. In physical format, something that costs 60 dollars turns into 78 dollars for me. I am literally being forced into digital.

That is true video games are a good example especially with stuff like Game Pass where it seems physical games are not even trying to compete with digital prices on Steam or Xbox store and I agree it’s hard to justify paying $60 for something when you can go home and download for $15

I have started about 1 year ago download all shows and movies I like and storing them on hard drives. I subscribe and pay for content but this is getting bad. I also don't want to have shelves of physical media everywhere so 1TB hard drives are the way to go. Just write on a sticker what is on the drive all problems are now taken care of.

That’s why I have always been hesitant to buy digital stuff. I use hoopla to read but they don’t have everything so I purchase comic omnibus and manga

It’s disgusting that people paid to have digital copies and Crunchyroll will just take that away

You can easily break the DRM on ebooks you've downloaded, and then they become truly yours, it's also fully legal. That way you can still support the creators while actually getting what you paid for permanently.

The illegal route isn’t as illegal as you think and if they make it really inconvenient or expensive to go the supposed legal route they will screw rhemselves

You should pay simply to encourage publishers to get stuff you want. Also free? I had been to those sites, and I got bombarded with ads. With or without blockers. Never mind all the stuff that is not safe for work. 😂

Please use a magnifying glass to read the fine print. The corporation Apple does this with music. I uploaded my own CDs into their music library and lost it in the cloud when I no longer had the appropriate device to access it. I could not do it on my iPad or iPhone-it required an official Apple computer (lab top or Mac). I worked in the science industry in which software companies no longer allow organizations to purchase their tools but only allow licensing so that they not only continue to control their invention but also continue to make money.

    Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's life for meeeee ☠🏴‍☠️🦜
Physical media has always been the way to go, imo. The initial cost upfront may be larger, but it's a you said, barring catastrophe you will always have that physical media. Digital only makes sense to me when it is a low subscription fee to encourage people to consume media ethically. I can't imagine the K Manga app competing with Viz when their digital library is as expensive as buying their physical books. Digital exclusives are not incentive enough to purchase a digital title. And I don't see consumers laying down and letting their digital libraries be burned while enduring a steep price hike. Paid entertainment is usually the first thing to be sacrificed on the altar of budgeting. I can't imagine CR, with its clunky UI and less than stellar customer experience, will maintain its clientele after this announcement.
