The World's LARGEST Coal Trucks (Kress Coal Haulers)

- This winter, we visited North American Coal in North Dakota to explore how one of the most unique trucks in the world operates-the Kress Coal Hauler.
Mines must transport coal from the cuts to the power plants they feed, which often requires hauling distances of many miles. Since coal is so much lighter than dirt, using standard haul trucks designed for rocks and earth is inefficient. Traditional trucks will never reach capacity no matter how much coal you stack in their beds.
Enter the Kress Coal Hauler-a giant belly dump truck specifically designed for coal. It can haul the same tonnage as the other mining trucks on site but over twice the total volume.
After loaders or excavators load the truck with coal, it can haul a full load to the plant at over 40 MPH. When ready to dump, it opens giant doors on the bottom of the truck, allowing the coal to dump out.

I used to work there in the shop fixing those trucks even got to drive them. The 300ton trucks have to have 200,000 hours on them by now.

I've never seen a haul truck like that before. It looks like it's really nice to drive. Since it doesn't have a massive tilting bed and a low center of gravity, the maintenance costs per hour should be less.

Biggest advantage of a Kress coal hauler is the top speed of 40-43 mph. Cycle times are fastern than the Cat end dumps which top out at 32-35 mph.

makes sense honestly, looking at the low center of gravity makes me think that on full loads it's still stable enough to go on slopes and turns faster

The older ones had dry chemical extinguishing setups. An old Kress was being scrapped and was sitting in our haul yard and I decided to hit the button, yellow powder everywhere.

My father is the Lead engineer for Kress on these coal haulers. He is very proud of his work and one day id love to see one in person.
I live in ND and I see these things at coal plants all the time. Really gives you a sense of scale when seeing them in person

Finally a vehicle capable of moving YOUR MOM around.
When I was at Newlands (Australia) in the early 2000's, they were using belly dumpers. Interestingly, that was the only Australian Pit I've seen them used. I suspect, there are a couple of disadvantages.
1. They'd be very inflexible. You could only use them for coal haulage, not OB. So, you'd need two fleets of haul trucks, with the associated maintenance costs.
2. There has to be a dedicated tip point for the coal, with an associated ramp and conveyor. Trucks can't just tip on the ROM.
There are probably a few others too. But, they obviously work for some pits.
BMA had Kress haulers at a few of their pits, now they're only at Blackwater as far as I know. They're also highly geared so they're slow as a snail going up the ramps.
@@nickh6076 Never been in the bit at BMA Blackwater. It would make sense that BMA have the scale to make a different coal haulage fleet economic.
When i was resident HD fitter in Moranbah for Hastings i used to go to Norwich Park ( closed now) and they had these pieces of shit Kresses there! They were winding down with these machines but they were not really that good of a production machine and they had them because Norwich had such long haul distances, pricks of machines to work on !

I went to North Dakota a few months back (true-story) I also bought a black rock, some plumbing parts & broken tools I fixed (thankx-4 upload)
Being a retired trucker of otr & dirt & rock. I've always wanted to drive a haul truck. I've especially wanted to drive a Kress because of the exotic look of the truck. I've ran bottom dump rock wagons & they were very awesome to operate. Considering how iffy it gets with a framless tail dump wagon thats 30ft or longer.
This would be an awesome base for an RV. You could take easily your whole family on a trip. And the whole school of your kids. And a hospital and the connected towns, a fire department and police station.

the fact that it has a v belly dump is better for center of gravity to be lower on such a big rig and the possibility of rollovers are much lower or not at all.

What moves those aren't the horsepower but the torque, horsepower are there to make them swifter.

My dad worked for detroit diesel in the mid 90's I remember going to work with him on weekends he would be rebuilding 12v149's for these when Estevan coal had them.. was pretty cool when you a little kid.

I've known about these trucks for years, but it is nice to finally see a good informative video about them for once. Such a cool and efficient design. In reading other comments, I guess these trucks are not available brand new from Kress anymore.
We just sent 8 to Australia in 2022/23. Awesome experience to watch them get built.

A bit of a missed opportunity to cover some of the technical details that make these interesting. What's the drive train like? How much fuel do these use in a shift? How fast do they drive? What does a set of tires cost and how long do they last? And I'm sure I could come up with more given more than the 2 minutes it took to write this.

Coal is the most abundant and cost effective natural source of energy next to Natural Gas and we should be EXPANDING production as all our Foreign Enemies are, especially overseas where they are building 3 plants every month while we are purposely destroying ours for pure political reasons! Ask yourself why? And NO it has nothing to do with the Environment that is pure propaganda!
So what actually drives the wheels , electric right ... or are just the back wheels driven and the fronts are turned electric / Hydraulic .

Rear wheels are driven mechanically. There is no drive on the front wheels. All the functions on the machine are hydraulically driven.

I think they're running a 20-30 min round trip if I'm not mistaken. It's quite a ways as the mine only moves further from the plant over the years

So the earlier ones like you showed in the first part of the video are actually a juiced 3512 out of a 785C truck making about 1700hp the later model like you showed with the ‘red tanks’ has the 3516 out of a 789D which is where the 2100hp comes from.

kress coal haulers really are nice to see, every other mining haul truck seems to have just converged on a single design and its abit boring
its probably because coal is less dense than other ores. That makes them able to increase the volume a lot with fewer structural strength considerations.

its just like, there arent many coal mines using them most just use standard design haul trucks from cat or komatsu
other truck design too, terex titan was 3 axle and it was used for iron ore, design doesnt exist anymore
