That's what happens when the government uses the monetary printing press as means to fund their promises and programs. The dollar died in 1971 when Nixon finally severed its tie to gold. At that moment on, government could tax citizens indirectly by debasing the currency through inflation. This rolls down the hill, finally resting on the backs of the common (no-asset holding) person. We blame companies for being greedy; however, they are responding naturally to maintain shareholder value. The government is getting off scot-free and continuing to wreck the economy and people's lives through this hidden tax--all to fund nonsense programs and export funding to warlords, wars, and other governments.

I just hate it when they downsize but still have the audacity to raise the price. It comes off as shady. Now with the internet - when one person notices, everyone notices. Let's call this out for exactly what it is. It's DISHONEST. There's no difference between doing this and putting the price up except that it's a deliberate attempt to mislead customers. When the contents is reduced, or ingredients changed, companies should be obliged by law to display the fact very prominently on the packaging.

Shrinkflation has been going on for years. My liquid detergent used to be 5 litres, then 5 kg. It got progressively smaller through the years until 3.5kg now with pack price also having increased. Actual unit price far exceeds compounded official government inflation rates. As a result, I changed to a different brand that is better but cheaper.
I wonder how much wsj got paid by those shrinkflatiors to potray them as innocently reacting to costs pressures. Those shrinkflating companies should look into how much they waste on advertising & marketing (bullshitting activities that do not give consumers value). I also wonder how much wsj was paid to not mention consumers turning to lower price alternative brands.

If you stop buying all that expensive, processed junk food, you will have more money to buy better quality food such as sirloin steaks, shrimp, real butter, whole grain pasta, non-starchy vegetables and whole fruit. Compare the price per ounce of Doritos to the price per ounce of filet mignon and see for yourself. Ditch the expensive junk food and feed your body well with minimally processed whole foods. You can become leaner and healthier if you avoid consuming all those sugary, starchy, low fiber, low vitamin, junk foods.

Jesus Christ. Corporations love comments like this. They love the fact that they can screw we the American people and instead of looking at them, ppl immediately blame their political opponents. Sleepy Joe or DT have little do with this. It's the ENTIRE corrupt political system built by both parties. We don't have a democracy or socialism, in America we have CORPORATISM. They get away with whatever they want: Raising prices, subscription based models. Tier based services and goods just to charge more. Shrinkflation. And from the workforce side? Mediocre salaries and wages that have become stagnant since the 80s. Outsourcing American jobs, cutting pensions and benefits from their loyal employees all to make more and more that they end up using in stock buybacks, you name it. Every greedy tactic under the sun. All because corruption is legal in the USA, where lobbyism is legal. No other 1st world country would accept such as disgusting and corrupt system. They own politicians from BOTH SIDES who have helped in the de- regulation process, and now they can literally get away with anything. To make it even better the vast majority of Americans blames the other political side, while mega corporations enrich themselves by screwing us more and more with each passing day. It's the perfect crime...

A few years ago our 'beloved' government, in the Netherlands, raised the taxes on common foods. Against all advices from scientists and other qualified persons. So, yes, our food is very expensive; the cattle-farmers are stopped (stikstof-crisis), so meat will have to come from?....by rail, road, air, water. Glass-house-products cost a lot of energy (water, light, heat, computers, the glasshouses themselves and their protection). So, what will we eat next year?

Deer consumer beware people need to realize what's going on with companies I've been looking at ice cream shrink for a very long time the containers getting smaller and smaller and we're paying more money and for what reason we can blame this that and the other thing but I say it like it is this is pure breed it's like a bag of chips you pay $2 and you get a dollar worth of chips and they say it's air it's like dish detergent if you notice there is a good amount missing from the top so what you do is you open up another one and you fill it up to the top that's how you get your money's worth because they're stealing from us it's like gas Beware of the gas pump if it starts pumping and there's no fluid going through you figure 10 to 20 cents before the gas comes through and there's thousands and thousands of people think about all that money they're making and at the expense of the consumer we have to be aware because the world wants to make us crazy with stupidity see I refuse to not be aware of what's going on because my money I make is not going to go to products that are out of control price wise see if you leave a product long enough at a grocery store it drops one or two dollars and these groceries stores are getting products at a pretty good price so beware out there of what's going on

“Where’s the beef” commercials from Wendy’s many decades ago are becoming true today. Went to Fatburger the other day and I noticed smaller burgers than I seem to remember. All the burger chains burgers are shrinking. You can thank your local and federal governments for that. Tax, tax and more tax makes business nowadays almost impossible not to mention all the other costs they have to deal with. Death of a thousand cuts.

    • @vshah1010

Wendy's beef is no longer fresh. It is dry. You can taste the difference.
All the fast food chains are shrinking food sizes and increasing prices. Sometimes they do both.

Why buy chips when you can make your own? Big companies that manufacture chips using cheap, overworked Labor should be boycotted. They're driving up the prices on their own.
