The MjuII is just brilliant. Cool tip about the relatives for sourcing one - my recommendation too (car booters too of course). I made a video about shooting in low light with it. I've had two and my favourite is now getting leaky, so I don't shoot so much with it now, but it still remains a favourite.

I've picked up two of these so far, each for around $5 or less, in charity shops. The Stylus Epic might be the most brilliant little camera ever, IMO. My only real complaint would be no manual DX overide or ability to turn flash off, without having to reset button after every cover opening.
Dear Rob, really enjoyed this video. I have a zoom version of this camera and although I realise it is not quite this one in lens quality, it has produced some excellent quality photos. This video has enthused me to buy some more film for this and my Olympus trip today. I plan to take this and a little Ricoh GR with me for a trip to Tuscany shortly.

I went to my grandma's yesterday and I was looking through her drawers. While searching for her old phone, I found the camera you mentioned in the video. The battery was dead, but it was ready to go with plenty of film inside it. I have it in front of me now, and tomorrow I'm going to get the 3V battery for it. Just wanted to share it.
Got one today for £2 it's the zoom 80 But even so can't wait to use it. Probably it's going to become my pocket camera for taking with me all the time because of the weight and size being so great
Hi Rob. Great video. I've got this camera and agree that it's a great little shooter. I've also got it's predecessor, the mju1. That also takes fantastic photos. It's a slightly bigger than the mju2 but not significantly so, and I think that it's actually nicer to handle. It's also a lot cheaper to buy online than the mju2 as it hasn't got the cult following. But either camera will do you proud!
I wish you attached the photos example after each mode explanation but overall, you describe the situation quite clear so kudos to you and thankss this is very helpful

Nowadays these camera's go for 200-400 euro's. Wish I bought a lot of them back when this video came out haha. Luckily I found one for 5 euro's last week at a flea market :D
To dry fire a mju II to check things work you turn flash off., you don't need a film, in it. ( I think, mine has film in it so cannot check, it's one of those cameras you use and like) His prices are outdated these cameras are at least £100 now if they fully work and are film tested because it's a good camera. I like it because it is actually small enough to fit in a jeans pocket. My one gets 26 photos from a 24 roll film which is probably normal. Anyy questionas just ask.
I brought one recently but the display is broken. Think I may have loaded the film beyond the positioning guides, but I wouldn’t of been able to tell if the display showed E? Have been using it and it sounds like it’s working i.e film rolling etc and photo has taken would there be anyway of telling if I have inserted too much film and if so will the photos still coming out that I am taking?
Hi Rob, today my mju stopped working randomly. I am unable to take a photo, the organe light and green light all appear before i take a photo and then when i press down fully nothing happens. I put in new film, I took out the battery and in again. I believe the battery is good i think? I was wondering if you knew what the problem was, its my birthday so bummed!!! Thank you!
hi, im having really bad focusing problems, only like 3 out of all my photos came out decently, but even they were still blurry. Can't work out what I've done wrong.. i half pressed the shutter and still came out pretty bad
Hi! I like the video, it helped me a lot! I was wondering if the flash idea you talk about near the end of the video, by moving the camera around when it flashes, does that technique have a name? and so I do that by using the night-mode flash right? I hold the camera with my hands, not a tripod, and the moment I push the button, Im going to move the camera around. that way Ill still get the subject clear but get cool light effects?
Hello, so I have just bought an Olympus Mju Zoom 105. I have just put some new film in and a new battery. The camera turns on yet the zoom lens doesn't come out. Am I doing something wrong?

+Space Noodles Tke the film out, get a piece of photographic paper, and put the film on it. Then shine some light on the film, and the image will become clear. It will also be in positive form.
Ive been using mjuii for quite a while now but it seems that most of the shots i take are out of focus. I dont know if my focusing sucks or it's a faulty camera. Specially when I use the flash.
frock youandme The auto focus mechanism could be faulty - but make sure you're not covering the sensor with your finger when you're shooting - it's just above and to the side of the lens, and make sure your subject is right in the middle of the photo when focussing. Also remember to centre your subject, half press the shutter button, then recompose and press the button down all the way. Cheers!
So I have been having the same problem as the other guy who recently commented about the focusing. I recently bought the camera off an ebay seller and just recently finished up a roll of TMAX 100. I develop my own B&W film. When I developed it, i noticed all of my shots were out of focuse. I do understand that it could be due to me covering the infrared sensor, and I also understand that the green light on the right side indicates whether it is focused or not. My question is, does the lens itself make a certain noice or anything to indicate whether it is focusing?
Alberto Matamoros The mju II focusses in an unusual way - you half press the shutter button and the camera uses the sensor to work out how far away your subject is, but at this point the lens doesn't move. It's only when you fully press the shutter button down that the camera then moves the lens and takes the photo. This means there's quite a long delay between pressing the shutter and the photo being taken, so a moving subject will often be out of focus. In action this means that you won't hear any mechanical noises from the lens when you half press the shutter, only when it's fully depressed, which can be disconcerting, and can lead to users not pausing when they half press the shutter, which leads to out of focus shots. Keep at it , try taking shots of static subjects, keep that sensor clear, and make sure you pause between half-pressing and full pressing the shutter button. Good luck!
i recently brought the mj i, and when shooting sometimes the photo just wont take even when i half press and the green light is showing and the red light is on for the flash. it makes a small mechanical sound as if its moving the film maybe? but doesnt actually take the picture, it also doesnt let me focus again and the lights dont work until i turn it on and off again? has anyone else got this problem and could tell me if im doing something wrong?
I had a similar problem, it wouldn't take any photos and the LCD display wasn't working properly. It as Luke that for a while then started working again, so if similar it can't be a major problem

+iCrysisful Not worse, just different. The Mju II / Stylus Epic has a fixed focal length prime lens, which is pretty fast for a compact at f/2.8. The zoom 140 has an equally fast f/2.8 aperture at the wide end. I'd say grab a new battery, throw a roll of film in, and have a go. Have fun!

managed to pick up a mju ii zoom 80, what will be the main differences with the quality of the images? will i be able to tell that much ? got a mju i as well , which one would you say produces the better image quality ?
fisher1996sam I'm sure you'll get great images from the Zoom 80 too. The Mju II / Stylus epic is probably a little sharper with its prime lens (and it's a little smaller), but you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference on sunny days.
can you tell me what is the difference between prices of this used item on e-bay, because I want to buy some used analog camera, and found same items for about 50$ and 200$, both used and in very good condition.
The difference in price is probably down to the different Stylus / Epic models. The f/2.8 fixed focal length versions go for much more than the zooms or the f/3.5 versions. The 2.8 is also much smaller.

Hi, i bought the mju iii last week, i took my first set of photos over the past few days and i actually have the same film you have in the background (the kodak colour plus). It says there is 24 exposures however the camera is still letting me take more pictures, i dont want to open it to remove the film incase the film is still working and i ruin all the photos ive taken, is it normal for it to still take photos but these photos wont be included in the film and is it ok for me to open the camera and remove the roll?
So both modes can be used to highlight the subject but as the eye mode removes the redness of the eyes it's more adequate to portraits or is it equal? Ps: I love the way you explain your passion ~~
Could someone please help me - I've just bought one second hand. It is in very good cosmetic condition. There is no film loaded into the camera, there is a fully charged battery however. When I slide the lens cover over to turn the camera on, the lens briefly pops out then back in - however not as far as the lens does in this video. almost as if it gets stuck. The E flashes. Is this camera working? I just don't want to load a £7 film into it only to find its faulty and won't work properly. Any help is greatly appreciated :)
Don't worry. If the lens pops out a few mm when slide the lens cover, thats ok. Mine does the same. Check some other video's about this camera, they all do.
Mine does that , lens pops out and then back in when you first pull back the lens cover. It seems perfecty normal. Sometimes the film in mine doesnt always load properly but otherwise it works great.
In reality, probably not a lot in terms of visual quality, unless you blow up your prints very large. The Stylus Epic is however physically much smaller, which can be useful.
Hello I've got a question about this camera, I finished the 36 shots and it rolled itself back. If i took out the film, did I expose the shots even thought its rolled back? Also, now that there is no film and the battery is in, I took a shot without the film in and now its showing E. What do you think is the problem? Thank you.

Can I remove the battery while theres film inside? Will it rewind the film or is it ok?

Examine the pressure plate (the stippled bit that pushes onto the film when the back is closed) for damage or foreign objects.

Sometimes you have an extra photo or to. Keep shooting and it will eventually rewind.

that's because it takes 36 exposures not 24..

Could someone please help me - I've just bought one second hand. It is in very good cosmetic condition. There is no film loaded into the camera, there is a fully charged battery however. When I slide the lens cover over to turn the camera on, the lens briefly pops out then back in - however not as far as the lens does in this video. almost as if it gets stuck. The E flashes. Is this camera working? I just don't want to load a £7 film into it only to find its faulty and won't work properly. Any help is greatly appreciated :)
It definitely has a fault. Blow around the lens, and turn it on and off a few times to see if it clears. Good luck!
Don't worry. If the lens pops out a few mm when slide the lens cover, thats ok. Mine does the same. Check some other video's about this camera, they all do.
Mine does that , lens pops out and then back in when you first pull back the lens cover.
It seems perfecty normal.
Sometimes the film in mine doesnt always load properly but otherwise it works great.

How big is the difference between the fixed lens and the ones with zoom?
In reality, probably not a lot in terms of visual quality, unless you blow up your prints very large. The Stylus Epic is however physically much smaller, which can be useful.

The fact I'm watching this now in 2021 and just paid $300 for one....

My flash doesn't seem to fire, not even in bad lighting. Anyone else had the same issue? I've tried every possible flash mode.
Perhaps it's faulty. Don't worry about it, and just shoot in the sunshine!

Hello I've got a question about this camera, I finished the 36 shots and it rolled itself back. If i took out the film, did I expose the shots even thought its rolled back? Also, now that there is no film and the battery is in, I took a shot without the film in and now its showing E. What do you think is the problem? Thank you.
Ok, so you need to take that film for developing, it should be fine. Take the battery out, put some fresh film in, and see what happens.
There is no problem. That's how they work.
