    I went to the premiere of this documentary. When Over the Edge came on screen the audience of mostly old Portland scenesters when ballistic. If it's possible to both bawl and jump out of your seat at the same time, I think I did it. This song will still kick your ass and take names.

    One my first concerts I went to in Athens ,Greece in the mid eighties .Saw them with my best friends and Greg and the band blew us away. They were original and tough,probably comparable only to the Ramones and Iggy . We were knocked out and they kept going. Thanks for the video , and the commentary about them . It brought back great memories of a musically better time. Archetypes of rock's'roll!!!

    The thing I like about Wipers is that they were so musically intriguing for a punk band. Unusual chord/tempo changes, great solos and lyrics. The only punk band I could compare to them is Wire but I like Wipers better :)

    Greg used just the right amount of distortion--kept his tubes sound really hollow and then added the most killer Echoplex. Even live, he drug that Echoplex along and had it set up on a stool in front of the amps, spinning away. The disintegration of the decay envelope in Greg's reverb was what gave his sound such an ominous presence.

    I've been into punk for some 13 years now. I don't know why it took me until a few months ago to get into Wipers... such a great band.

    Punks never considered them as "punk music" when the wipers first came out, as Greg Sage intended the band to be. Today they're one of top influential band considered by most punks.

    ogqozo, the documentary were this is from is about the Portland late 70s/early 80s DIY scene in general, not specifically about the Wipers. If only someone would make a documentary about the Wipers, that would be fantastic.

    I used to laugh every time I'd hear the phrase, "Portland Pride." Thats before I discovered bands like this one and Poison Idea. I live over 1,400 miles away now and I love hearing this stuff. This song still makes my head crawl. Ex1le444 is right, this is about as punk as it gets.

    The Wipers started grunge. They influenced Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many 90's great bands. Until the early 80's, there was no such thing as grunge, there was punk. Grunge was something new, but still wonderful...

    • @square1971
      @square1971 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm, i'm struggling (always have) with exactly what grunge is? I know what you mean by grunge, but you always hear the label associated with the same list of bands, you know who they are. But what about Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins, or other mid-80's era bands with similar sound?
      Also, I hear a lot of Dead Boys in the Wipers, and you can't get more punk than that. The Wipers do sound a bit more polished, tighter.

    • @Ummagumarios
      @Ummagumarios 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well The Wipers is a punk band, but they don't sound like a punk band. I mean, they sound so much different from any punk band of this era. Them ( Wipers) and Husker Du were the bands that influenced the 90's generations and created this sound. So you could say that grunge, is an alternate version of punk. It's something unique, a sound that comes from mid-late 80's Seattle and Portland bands mainly. Dinosaur Jr and Smashing Pumpkins where grunge as well, because you can understand that something is different in their tone and they came from these cities as well. You may not hear the difference at first but then you will find out that grunge is a bit more calm, a bit more melodic and grungers(?) also have long hair. The only punk band that the members had long hair where the Ramones. That's a rock'n roll feature! Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many more, were the second wave of this sound and they are what people call grunge. They weren't the ones who started it tho :)

    Funny how you never see Sage on those lists for the 100 greatest guitarists of all time!! He's better than 99.9999999% of guitar players in the history of the world. The world is not a fair place.

  • @burlehn

    Actually I was recently shocked when I saw Greg on SPIN's top 100 greatest guitarists list. He shoulda been #1 but at least he was there.

  • @90sRockWhore
    @90sRockWhore 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Greg didnt really want to be a huge band,
    the wipers were just a project for him, he didnt want to tour and be in the press.
    he wanted the music to be a part of the listeners imagination, so that we'd get a deeper perspective on it. instead of being a commodity.
    too bad they stopped.

    wow dude I dont know really anybody with the scoop on gs's sound. I've tried to emulate it for years with varying degrees of sucess. There just isnt enough information about gregs rigs on the net, I guess that just shows how underappreciated he still remains.
    There should be a guitar geek on him.

    @RebelThoughts They didn't get the recognition they deserved becuase Greg Sage didn't want his music to go on any major label, but then they'd go mainstream and Greg didn't want that. In a way their lack of recognition was their own fault.

    I'm surprised that the singer has stated the band didn't really to really fit into "punk" then. Seems perfectly punk to me, I mean in terms of what punk should have been about. I mean if it's just preferring not to be labeled, that's cool. But to me, this is up there with the fairly few examples of perfect punk.

    Kurt mentioning Greg's name actually gave him alot of exposure and if you were smart you would realize that. The Wipers are too old of a band for kids now to get into, most people heard of the Wipers thru Kurt if you want to admit it or not.
