The Bible student in me loves how you called a chord progression a “passage.” You’ve got knowledge and wisdom beyond your years my friend. Great video.
I love that your phrasing is sort of always in "between the notes", which makes it sound organic and voice-like. Adding all those little dynamic fluctuations, rhythmic counterpoints, vibrato, playing around with intensity levels, with a pick, fingerstyle or hybrid and you start having your own voice on the instrument. You definitely stand out how you gel it all together in a natural way. Nice playing. BB, Clapton, Gilmour, Mayer would be proud.
Long time student of JM -- the upstroke he does often is apparent in SRV's technique and so pivotal to the overall tone/feel. Thanks for posting this one!
Hey! I just foud out about your channel today I've been playing for two years almost, and ive been looking for guitar guides for my level. And your video answered way more of my questions then anything I saw recently and even exposed me to new things I even didn't know about (such as mods!) Looking forward to realize your tips in my guitar playing, keep up the good work.
Great video! YES, at the end that’s exactly what I’ve always told everyone (students, audience, bandmates, etc) for decades-we’re not guitarists, we’re musicians… and the most important tool/skill we have is our ear! It’s the most valuable thing you can develop… Really loved your tips and hearing your perspective. You have great touch/feel, and expression!
Absolutely epic playing man. But why revealing such big secrets as upstrokes, I naturally came to prioritising those and it's become part of my style quickly and most importantly silently 🤣
Great video. It really shows why your solos sound so good. For myself I pulled together a plan but I'd love to know if you've got any suggested exercises to help me achieve some of these, especially for the first point. Whilst I know my chords and can figure out chord tones and arpeggios, getting it fluent whilst improvising seems so far away. 1. Be able to follow changes, use chord tones to improve solo. 2. Be more deliberate with pick direction, try different directions and using them more stylistically than economically. 3. Sing solos to make them more lyrical. 4. Learn favourite solos by listening to them and transcribing them myself. 5. Go over solos I know and make sure I can play them perfectly. 6. Rewrite/rephrase solos I know/have written. 7. For songs where I improvise solos, have a plan to ensure more consistency with how good they are.
Normally I don't watch these kind of videos anymore, I'm just doing my thing, but I'm sure as hell watching this one. Your playing is amazing, I'm all ear!
Very nice content and playing man. I notice that you've become really good at talking, you sound very mature now. Last time I watched you talk, you said the word "like" like 100 times in 5 minutes. This time I think I haven't heard it even once.
I thought it was a click bait title but I ended up watching the of the best guitar lessons online and learned a lot of new things! You have given us the REAL content here, not just some blah blah blah, thank you!
Hey Hudson! Greetings from the Philippines! Your guitar covers are a huge inspiration, and I've learned a ton from your amazing works. Keep rocking and spreading the musical vibes! 🤘
Hudson, might you be THE person that will finally make THE best tutorial on how to mix major and minor? I think you're the one. Please use your "BB King improv" video as a ref. That's the video the people want. Thanks in advance.
Man, we need more and more from you! Could do a video or just give an opinion on how to approach improvised solos? How do you make your lines so singable and vocal? Thanks.
I am your fan living in South Korea. I always enjoy watching your performance videos. This video brought me greater joy.😄 Because I felt it could get closer to your playing style.🎸 I am grateful that I can enjoy and appreciate your performance from the other side of the world. I hope you always play happily. thank you very much👍👍👍
Excellent. I finally conceptually understand Modes. So well explained. I'd love a video where you show and play examples of how the different modes "feel" like you explained the "open sky" feeling of Interstellar.
I know I'm in a good place when I also started with piano major scales, and 4months into guitar now I literally just questioned your point 1 and 2 and you make this video. Timing... Thanks
Excellent video you've done. Pro level stuff. Truly broke down some walls and lit up some light bulbs for me. Thank you so much. Btw, I love your guitar playing, it is superb!
Ok, so… just take A,B,C,D,E,F,G and put my fingers on them to make the best solo in the world.. got it! Thanks, Hudson!😅 Just kidding, my friend. You are an incredible, inspirational player to say the least. You have a gift from God, thank you for sharing it!
Yes this is true! But it’s important to know how to target chord tones. Once we have that knowledge, we can make more informed and intentional choices with our improvisation.
As a guitarist who likes Steve Vai and Yngwie i would say the biggest lie i've ever been told is that practicing a part slowly means that you can play it fast eventually. Practing fast solos at a slower speed just means you will engrain all the mistakes that occur from playing what was composed as a fast lick into your muscle memory. Just like string hopping instead of slanting your pick in an angle across the strings for better economy of motion. So just practicing smaller parts of the solo at a speed where your playing starts to get sloppy is a much better idea cause you can easily identify what mistakes your are making and correct them.
Lol! Yeah the pentatonic has all “correct” notes so it will sound good, but there’s a lot more colors we can access when we use the full- 7 note version of the minor scale, as well as harmonic and melodic minor, etc. Thank you for watching!
The truth is that there are very few musical geniuses out there, and they are born with that talent. The whole industry can only grow if you convince people with no talent that they don't need talent.
Gm pentatonic will not work as all the notes will be essentially 1 whole step below the “correct notes”. Playing G mixolydian- (C major notes) will give you the correct notes. From there you can decide to follow or not follow that scale!
Whoever told you this "lies" must be a gardener or a butcher. I strongly recommend not to believe non-musicians. Otherwise you will hear those kind of misinformation a lot.
I've always liked and followed your videos, and seeing you posting a 30-minute video is really good, don't disappear, do more!
Thank you so much! I’m not going to disappear! More videos coming soon!

Are you recording with an amp/mic or a VST or amp sim?
Awesome video! Helped me so much!
So happy to hear! Thank you for watching
learned a lot here thanks bro!
Glad to hear that Jake! Thanks for watching
Focusing on motif and thematic development in solos holds far greater significance than merely outlining chord tones.
Yes this is true! But it’s important to know how to target chord tones. Once we have that knowledge, we can make more informed and intentional choices with our improvisation.
Hi! I have stratocaster fender guitar and fender champion 20 amp, do you have any tips for improving the sound? Maybe an extra amp?
Thank you!!
i loved it, thank you. You could be our next John mayer if you were writtin

awesome thanks hudson!
Glad you enjoyed!
Amazing information!!
Thank you!!
Very nice😊
Lol, you play the pentatonic as an example of what it lacks, but what you played still sounds great.
Lol! Yeah the pentatonic has all “correct” notes so it will sound good, but there’s a lot more colors we can access when we use the full- 7 note version of the minor scale, as well as harmonic and melodic minor, etc. Thank you for watching!
You are a legend thank you so much :]
Thank you for watching!
Sweet tone. What's your signal chain?
Thank you! It’s just Neural DSP’s Mesa Boogie Mk-II Plugin

Keep up the good work :)
Thank you!!
Great video.
Thank you!
Why do youtubers always jack the volume of the guitar so much higher than the narration???
Could we play Gm pentatonic on that passage? G Dm7?
Gm pentatonic will not work as all the notes will be essentially 1 whole step below the “correct notes”. Playing G mixolydian- (C major notes) will give you the correct notes. From there you can decide to follow or not follow that scale!
That John guy is gonna be big
Dope!!
Thank you!!
Whoever told you this "lies" must be a gardener or a butcher. I strongly recommend not to believe non-musicians. Otherwise you will hear those kind of misinformation a lot.
you need to fix the mix, the guitar is really loud and your voice is barely audible
I will definitely try and balance the levels better in the next video. Thanks for the feedback!
