Problem with being a software engineer without a degree is that you get underpaid and you dont get considered in the big companies in SA.

It depends on how well you sell your self and show case the value you bring. Negotiation is a soft skill.

It can be but it's not always the case.

The original programmers did no have degrees.
Cos you do not need a degree to become a programmer.
Its later when the US government agency like NASA and others needed programmers,
    is when the problems started.
They could not hire them because their policy was to hire only Engineers to some departments.
But these programmers did not have a degree.
But because they needed them badly so the started calling them Software Engineers even if they didn't have degrees.
This angered the other real Engineers with degrees.
So the universities decided to create courses that catered for programmers that was eventually called Computer Science and that concentrated mostly on Math and Algorithms.
But studying these degrees doesn't make you a programmer.
It mostly will of help if you are making more complicated and math intensive software, like for Machine Learning or Data science or Game Engines etc...
You might get introduced to a programming language, but you still need to do most of the studying yourself.
Today the whole field is called Information Sciences.
Those who take a degree are usually the ones called Software Engineers.
The programmers without a degree are usually called Software Developers.
Although the 2 are always mixed up by most people.

A Computer Science Degree or Software Engineering actually does. It also teaches you to apply yourself and be creative
