I'm in the automotive trade and agree it's a good fix you could also just find a colour to flick in and slight laquer but all of which would eventually wear with the action of the stantion seal, but yeh your right the filler would guard against seal wear if it hasn't been damaged already that is.
I did the same, but used jb weld two part epoxy. It was a small chip, but the jb weld sticks well and sets rock hard. Its been on two years now and is still spot on. Doesn't seem to be degraded by the motor oil I use in the lowers. It sets dark grey (anthacite) so may look slightly out of place on black or gold stanchions. Also no leaks to date 🙂
@@amir_mtb there is copper, and also aluminum fillers you can buy. copper one would be awesome for kashima. also you can use epoxi mixxed with gold nail paint that matches the kashima coating color.
Thanks!! How long would this last if nothing bashed against it? Just in normal summer and winter conditions? Would it ever fall off or would it last as long as the kashima coat? assuming it didnt get any contact damage. I have a long thin scratch 3cm but diagonally vertical luckily, i can just about get my nail into it just about.
Hi, thanks for watching, providing its done correctly it will last as long as the fork does, if you can get your fingernail in it then dirt will too, repair it asap.
I really find this interesting and very helpful. I have a question though, can you paint the stanchions? I had a friend who painted his with nail polish.
A bit of bog and lite hands.Ive been running this exact fix for my Fox 34 Kashima on my Pivot for 7 years now.Use blue tape when getting it level. The wet sand (no tape) is the trick when you get it level..Well done. Fox wants over $400 to replace the stanchions.
surely you would sort out the burs and feel with your fingers before the brake cleaner? Cleaning then rubbing a finger over afterwards would just put more oil on the area you want to apply the apoxy which isnt ideal... You could also use a product like sendhits stanchion scratch filler.... its designed for this exact purpose...
Hi, Thanks for watching. I understand what you are saying and thats probably a better way of doing it, having said that, the area is cleaned with a new lint free clothe and my fingers are washed. You tube is about sharing your experience and Im happy you are passing on yours, I will look at the sendhits filler too although it seems very pricy. Thanks again.
Hi, Thanks for watching the video, You would be surprised how much a replacement kashima stanchions are, on average they are £389.00 plus the cost to fit them. unless you can find a decent donor pair.
Make sure you clean off the scratch and get all the grease off and then rub your greasy finger over the clean scratch numerous times before putting the body filler in the scratch.

Hi, thanks for watching and your comments. Yes jb weld will do a good job
Great idea but car body filler is absorbent and will eventually soak in oil and degrade , a better option is JB weld
@jason whic JB Weld product would you recommend?
It's a two part epoxy

@@ShadowlordDio Thanks! I'll give it a shot when I have some biking downtime
I found some powder to colour the resin, does it will work?
Really good video, thanks alot!
My pleasure!

You're welcome!

Hi, Thanks for your comments. you could lightly cover the scratched area with nail polish as long as the the sharp edges have been taken off first.
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Thank you so much you're amazing.
I wonder what the filler is that you are using? What type and brand? I really need to try this on my bike after an accident last weekend.
Hi Stefan, thanks for watching, Its Plastic Padding (ultima)

What did you use? What is bog?
Would epoxy steel work?
Yes it would

places like Souhtcoast Suspension can replace the stanchions, and although I don't know the price I would doubt its anywhere close to 400quid!

Could you use any 2 part epoxy do you think?
Cheers
Hi Bernie, I personally would say no, card body filler works well because it's easily sanded and once cured is extremely hard wearing.
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Ok thanks for that.
Thanks
We use the scratch test in the Areo Space Industry ..if you can feel it with your nail then it needs more investigation
Perfect. Close your eyes and use your finger nail.
Cay you use alcohol or do you really need to use brake cleaner
Hi Grace. Thank you for watching. Alchohol is just as good as long as its got no additives in it. Your just after a completely grease free surface.
Would a polyester filler work? I have just purchased Roberlo plus 24 polyester 2 part filler. Is this the right stuff?
Hi, Thanks for watching, yes that will do nicely.
What will happen if we not repair it?
Hi, It will damage your fork seal which will then let in water and dirt.
Im wondering could i do this method on a similar sized patch of rust on the stancion?
Hi, I don’t see any reason why not
So much for kashima "antiscrarch" coating
True
As I'm watching this video you have to get the scratches out the bike first before giving it a full maintenance cleaning on the bike.
Hi, thanks for watching, the idea is to take the sharp edges off then fill the remainder if required.
Do you not have to use a file then to remove the burr?
Hi, Thanks for watching, No, a file would be too abrasive, you need fine wet and dry, unless there is a big burr.
Make sure you clean off the scratch and get all the grease off and then rub your greasy finger over the clean scratch numerous times before putting the body filler in the scratch.
this is why aluminium legs suck
rocky silver - 4ever !!!
cringing as I watch this dude spray brake cleaner indiscriminately all over everything.
