  • Wanted to make this video for quite awhile as there isn't much for content on doing a solid build on a Big Block Chevy without bolting on expensive top end parts. This video will show you how to make power with budget in mind

    Disagree about the peanuts dropping off after 4500 rpm. I have a 454(461) .030. And howards Big Mama Rattler cam. Opened up bowl blend. Polished intake ports. (Everything done with a dremel). Cut valve guides for new dual srings and viton seals. Full roller rockers.8.5 compression true flat tops(no small dish in center). RPM air gap. 1" phenolic spacer. Holley ultra 800cfm. Engine pulls to 6000 easily and makes tons of power. Massive torque! Velocity= rate of speed!

    Awesome video .. just installed a peanut port ( 360 casting ) 454 ( gen IV ) in my 85 Monte SS today.. 270H magnum cam and 2" super comp headers. This set up was in a running G-body Elky that i bought as a doner car. I got a CK built 2004r backing with 2400 stall and a GN rear with 3.73s this thing should be lots of fun even with the 8:1 CR

      Yeah peanut ports really aren't bad like people think! A lot of people making really good power with them. Only reason I'm switching is because I already have a set of oval port heads ready to go and im already doing a cam swap on my truck as well.

      @@RatMaro I didnt want to dig into this engine.. ran good in the Elky even with the dead 2.73's and 1200 stall converter . ( had a THD400 ) so the performance should really wake up with the 3.73s and 2400 stall in the Monte with the deeper 2004r gears along with the overdrive.. if im not happy, i'll just wait and do a "top end package"

    I am using 781's right now, but 290's will make well over 500hp with just a little work anyone can do! They are a great head if you are running flat top pistons. Hell, peanut ports will make 500hp as they sit, and might be the best bang for someone who doesn't want to put in a ton of work.
    I'm using the 781's with stock valve size, and stainless race valves, on my .030 over 427 bbc. Cam is a Howards 121861-10. 11.66:1 compression, RPM Air Gap, Holley 850 dp, 1-7/8" primaries into a 3" collector that's 18" long. Corrected dyno numbers are 554hp from 5500-6000rpm, and 564lb ft trq from 4500-5000 rpm. Actual numbers for 92 degrees, 60% humidity, and at 1089 feet above sea level are: 504hp from 5500-6000rpm, and torque was at 513 from 4500-5000 rpm. Plenty of power to put my 2962lbs (with driver) S10 drag truck into the mid 10's in the 1/4 and the mid 6's in the 1/8, which is all I'm looking for.
    Long live big blocks!! 💪👍

    • @antilaw9911
      @antilaw9911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Peanut ports are better up to certain cam limit. Per cam used, they will take better advantage of the cam rpm range and have more velocity through that range. That equals better throttle response etc. Sure, big gigantic ports make bigger peak power but lose much percentage of velocity for the trade off of low end response. In our minds yes, the big ports look and seem appealing but the reality of how they work goes against conventional thinking. VELOCITY= RATE OF SPEED! 👍

    If you're on a budget just stick with the stock valves in your oval port heads. They should be 2.06 intakes and 1.72 exhausts. You'll only be leaving 25-50 horsepower on the table. But, you'll save nearly $850 that you'd lay out to open up the valves and replace the parts.
    If you want to do some of the most amazing burnouts ever...go with peanut ports. You'll have a blast!

If you don't blend the bowls properly you will have huge power losses and the factory valves will actually outflow them

    Question what crosses the line if you have a 1973 C3 Big Block Corvette and you want more power but want the numbers to remain true to the original build? I know there are many implied limitations and you have to first make the assessment the car is really worth saving or claiming it is a survivor. Does a low profile manifold or different heads, headers, carb cause the car to be truly molested? I'm not looking for a track experience or street racing but just some pleasing pulls and jealous looks.

    • @RatMaro
      @RatMaro  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It should work great with that cam and head combination! Flat tops can cost a bit of compression, however if you do have the heads off running a steel shim headgasket can raise compression to make more use of the larger camshaft. Even without the steel shim headgasket the combination should work great though.

    I see you watch Richard holdener. A little FYI for you, the headers on a factory big block chevy isn't going to give a 30 or 40 hp gain, the camshaft isn't big enough is the reason why. It's not because of the compression either.

    So im not a car nerd by any means but I can wrench on them. I wanna learn engines really bad and I found a cutlass with a 454 in it. So are these bolt ons or do I need to get it tuned or some kind of computer or can I just get new headers, intake, and oval port heads and make like 500+ hrspwr?

    • @RatMaro
      @RatMaro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That engine would likely have a Carb versus fuel injection. So someone would have to tune the carb to match. If you did these mods I'd probably go with an 850cfm Holley. But yeah these mods are doable, but they are a little on the harder side to accomplish. Headers and intake are pretty easy, heads and cam are a bit harder.

      Boring the block is fine, 454s have a thick cylinder wall and can be bored 0.100-0.125. However there isn't all that much performance gain just from boring the block, I personally like to leave them alone unless it needs an over bore to clean the cylinders up. Or if you want to just run a light over bore of 30-60 thousandths. But yeah you should not have issues so long as you don't max out the cylinder with an overbore.

      Those heads are great just get a good valve job, bowl blend and widen/flatten the short side radius....if you want a little extra then plunge cut the chamber wall to unshroud the intake valve.....good for 550 HP with the right cam, which you need spec’ed by Chris Straub....he has bad ass grinds and has Clay Smith cut them.... After this you have a severe traction problem....

    I like your Camaro but you don't have an Edelbrock air gap as I see a performer or RPM style. I AGREE 781 and 049 heads are great as I have 4 sets in my garage. LoL. My 1969 nova 396 has 781 heads with 219x188 valves and runs 10.32 in 1/4 mile. Hopefully my procharger 600PB will push me into 9's.

      Thats under the hood of my peanut port headed truck, it's a chevy casting intake off of a crate 502. For my 68 Camaro I have a fully ported dart tunnel ram, aiming for 9s on motor with a high compression 439 haha.

      No need with the Holley Sniper. It self tunes the more you drive. However it can be manually tuned as well.

      Awesome combo! Should run pretty good! The carb might be a bit small however, probably going to at minimum want a 750

    Well you need to match your cam with your valve Springs and also match the cam with a stall converter
