  • In this video, continuing from the last video, I talk about how those replaceable identities usually substitute our self and how this phenomenon is exacerbated in Korean society.

Thank you for sharing this viewpoint, since I normally don’t address people by their work/position title I did not realize how this would affect one’s mindset. I can see the pros and cons of it. Your video helped to provide a better understanding of how maybe a Korean will see the same event as I do, but have a totally different take on it because of the way we were raised to see each others position. The movie Rashomon came to mind.

I am Vietnamese/Chinese descent and Koreans (along with Japanese and [full blooded] Chinese) tend to look down at me and because of the reputation of my poorer country. I am glad I don't live in those countries. I would've self deleted no doubt. I am a US citizen and I am glad I am away from those toxic cultures.

That must have been very upsetting, and it aligns with my point, because I think the people who look down upon others and make others miserable are neither content nor fulfilled. Those people are everywhere, and I believe resentment does not offer anything valuable.

I'm so happy you seem to have found a place that allows you to be who you are without shame.
I hope you are embracing the person you are and you feel proud of your heritage.

What you say near the end is very true.
    (The atomizing of society)
In a way, the only way to preserve general respect for a certain position is to keep the group small!
A national celebrity understands this when they go overseas and no one knows who they are.
That is likely a very humbling experience and they might want to stay in their bubble instead of facing it.
But as groups grow and merge, it’s true. The groups atomize. And status becomes questionable.
I think generally… as cultures merge, this also naturally happens. The group roles become less able to be maintained, and the unique identities remain.
Which in many ways is more flexible and versatile. I imagine a network compared to a pyramid.
This allows for relationships and work to be done where they are needed, without the overhead of first establishing what the hierarchy is.

That have been set by the society from the beginning And the only way it will change is by people stopping it. When I was in school we call the teachers by Mr or Mrs and at work we call the supervisor by name we a all adult we know who the boss is,we don’t need when addressing him we have to call him boss. What we have to understand as human beings is not everything that is created in ur culture or society is right. U have to know for yourself what is moral right or wrong and go with it.

@ungin wow! 👏🏽 you articulated and framed your ideas very well here. I recently traveled to South Korea for 2 weeks from Los Angeles.. I loved my time there when accompanied by my two Korean friends. However found myself feeling anxious, nervous, and depressed when on my own…. It all ties in to exactly what you have identified. Good work. Please keep it up. Looking forward to more insight.

I'm glad you had your friends to help you! And - thank you so much for your kind words! :):) Last time I traveled to Los Angeles, I was really surprised to see Paris Baguette there. I didn't know it existed outside of Korea 😂😂

Next time you come, reach me some how (I will try to figure out a non public way to share my contact) and the same friends will show you the true K Town experience 😏. Paris Baguette, of course .. Google “Paris Baguette HQ Costa Mesa, CA.” Also CJ has landed not so long ago, so we have Tous Les Jours also coming with heavy competition.

Address people by their name. Status addressing is terrible. Yikes! Thanks for the video.

    Excellent points made👏
At the end, Morality, ethics and compassion matters. Character will take you places not social status👏
What subject are you doing PhD in?
I just completed PhD in Medieval Indian History and became a Doctor✨

phenomenal points made. i think even just your ability to analyze and deconstruct the superficiality you perceive at large in society is an indicator that you are a very compassionate person and an ideal friend/person to know. while this mindset of not reducing everyone to occupations/titles should ideally be integrated into the norm at least you & many others will have the comfort of knowing you are not alone in feeling this way 🩷

nice humble point of view, Korea needs a shift in a point of view on this. If I will be in Seoul again, it would be great to meet and talk about that!

I'm from Serbia, so I cannot speak on the Korean society's problems but from what I heard and seen the reason that titles are used is because of the stubbornness to follow tradition. While having titles and certain frames in society is beneficial to some extent it can lead to division, which is the main problem. Having all this to say, and more, the way things are is unlikely to change so we have to try adhere as much as we can while maintaining and improving our self. Great video

I think this is one of the problems in Korean society, but it is also a common human experience. Not many people even care about the names of Walmart cashiers. However, I believe we can change this slowly as we focus more on the essentials. Thank you for your comment!

There’s a Korean song called Lullaby by Shin Seung Hun and BeWhy. It describes how the young girl grows up dreaming of making a name for herself. She soon marries and is then referred to as “so&so’s ” mom. Thereby losing her identity.
To me that sounds like you’re saying I (as an executive VP) at my company would be addressed as such in and out of the workplace. Which maybe on an acknowledgement of accomplishments is cool but it also seems pretentious outside of work. I see a very clear hierarchy mixed in the general manners. What happens to my identity if I retire or move to a different sector? I can see how using the titles in the workplace setting would be appropriate but outside of that it seems odd. I dunno please correct me if I misunderstood.

When did this phenomenon started? whats the root?
Is it maybe the feudal system extrapolated and incorporated to the "new" society?
I mean...when korea was a kingdom the only ones with surnames where the feudal lords and the royalty...afterwards surnames were awarded/sold yet,the conciousness about titles didnt escaped their minds...maybe?...idk...it is interesting to uncover what shaped the modern korean culture!
