    I have done a ton of VR for almost 10 years and yes this is the very best combat for a game using this style. What people don't get is it mirrors the flat Arkham games exactly. And that's what makes it the best for what it does.

    • @KingKlear
      @KingKlear 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would give a slight edge to combat in UNDERDOGS, which is fully physics-based, but sidesteps the issues such combat usually has by adding an extra layer with your virtual arms mirroring your moves exactly and the mech arms doing the damage in a physics-based environment.
      But the combat in Arkham Shadow is amazing, no doubt about that.
      Also shoutout to Until You Fall, which takes a smiliar non-physical approach, though it is more abstracted and arcadey.

    I am loving the combat, especially when you mix it up a bit with batarang, jumps, etc.
    Also some people don't seem to realise that you can actually move freely during combat even if you don't really need to.

      The original arkham games could always be mostly played as simply mashing the attack button. But to get the best scores, the most xp, and dance the most beautiful dance, you had to introduce all your tools and abilities. This has replicated that so well.

    Its fresh and different, and thats what I love. Arkham games have always been about fast timing based attacks, and if Arkham Shadow had your standard VR melee combat, it wouldn't be an Arkham game. They managed to combine both. Time based attacks plus motion controls. It works, and punching guys out is very satisfying. Also keep in mind that combat becomes more dynamic after you've played the game long enough to get the upgrades.

    I think a lot of actions and animations need to become a bit more orchestrated and gamified in VR to get rid of the all of the jank that usually comes with free-form movement. As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to hand to hand combat, Batman is the best. I'm throwing punches like I mean it, and the haptics and the sound resulting from that and seeing the enemy get their clocked cleaned is tickling that primal spot in my brain that makes it feel good and as close to real as it's going to get in VR.

I tend to stick to what works. So all my fights are the same against any enemy near enough. Where this yes its a rhythm type game. But it still requires you to hit the right punch and block correctly. It makes you feel more like your engaged in those fights and as said gives you a good work out. Its different and feels good. Your Batman and it can't get any better than that

    I appreciate that they have developed a new combat style: part boxing part rhythm, in the sense that you have to punch in certain directions. The problem with this is that if I am fighting someone IRL I would not be limited to this. For a game though this style works really well and you have to be on your toes to be successful.

Beyond the combos, the rhythm and necessary precision to keep your combos going feels exactly like Until You Fall does. @BeardoBenjo tell me you've played this!
      In every other way though it's a beautiful tribute to the Rocksteady Arkham games. Camouflaj should be insanely proud to have pulled this off so well, and I hope we get to see some deep extensions to the game in time. It's not often that I'd say I would pay another $25 (ish) for a good expansion, just a few more hours to see more of Gotham and a different villain. Maybe in time :)

    First off, the video looks nice. Also, good review on the combat system and the combat mini-game.
    One update they could offer that would justify having purchasable skins is a combat replay where you rewatch your fight from the 3rd person. Another can be "mini-games" of sorts where you play one of the henchmen or civilians doing tasks or trying to survive when Batman arrives to solve the situation, then you switch over to Batman. Wonder how the mental feeling would go from being a victim of a criminal trying just to survive to then bringing justice to the criminal trying not to put him in the morgue.

Even though I got Asgard's Wrath 2 free with it, I still haven't played it because it takes up almost half the storage, and I don't want to uninstall a bunch of games to play it. This one is only coming in at about 20GB, but that's still almost 1/4 of available space on the 128GB* Quest 3, so it's going to be difficult to figure out which games I want to uninstall to make space for this one.

    I'm not trying to diminish anything about B:AS, it is absolutely as good as advertised and deserves every accolade that it is getting, but I do think it's interesting that I haven't seen a single text review or youtube video that has mentioned that the combat system shares some similarities to the training montage segments of Creed (also an excellent VR game in its own right) which were probably my favorite part of that game.
    Both are obviously attempts to gamify rhythm based punching so some similarity is probably inevitable.
    I'm not suggesting that Camouflaj ripped anything off or that Creed is better or anything, just that both work similarly, feel alike in the moment, and both flood all my dopamine receptors (Creed may even get the edge thanks to the liberal use of the Rocky score during the training segments) in the same way.
    Anyone else here that played Creed? Am I crazy in finding some overlap there? If nothing else, I just expected someone to use it as a helpful descriptor, something like "If you played Creed and enjoyed the rhythm flow training montages of mini-games, you will find a lot to like here."

  • @dayveeman
    @dayveeman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, Batman's combat isn't a true simulator, it meets you halfway. You don't have to be a real martial artist to look good taking out a group of thugs. I think of it like the connection to dance dance revolution and real dancing. You don't need to actually be a good dancer, you just need to have just enough coordination and rhythm to hit the prompts correctly, and then your avatar in-game reacts as if you were really dancing. But that half measure makes all the difference to the immersion, just tapping buttons wouldn't feel nearly as satisfying. I think there's room for both approaches, having a more accurate physical simulation and asking players to get better IRL or accept looking a bit goofy; or the game has you do the basic general movement and the game translates that into a more complex smooth in-game result.

      the risk of injury is much smaller here than in other melee vr games because of how gamified it is. You don't have to do any crazy moves because the game automatically does it for you.

  • @pixxelpusher

    It just solidifies that the combat in it just isn’t really going to be for me as I don’t want VR to be dumbed down and gamified. I don’t even like using the word “game” anymore for VR, as I want it more and more to be moving towards being a real experience. It almost looks like the Guitar Hero of combat, where as a guitarist, Guitar Hero is nothing like playing a real guitar, which is what I’d prefer to do. In comparison I’m really enjoying the combat in Arizona Sunshine Remake and the freedom it gives to being creative in fighting, from using a hammer, to complete evasion, to gathering all the enemies together and throwing a grenade at them and wiping them all out. If that mechanic was in Batman then for me it would be a better experience. I’m sure it works well for those new to VR or as an introduction to first person combat, but feels a bit like VR with training wheels on.

    I understand what you are trying to explain about the combat feeling good to you, but it isn't the best melee combat in VR. There are many other games I've played that have better melee combat than what I am getting in Batman: Arkham Shadow. Where I personally find Batman: Arkham Shadow to shine is on the stealth gameplay. It's overall strength as a game is that it is a well rounded single player story campaign game with stealth, combat and good voice acting / animations piecing it all together.
    I do agree with you that Batman: Arkham Shadow is something that will be more accessible / enjoyable for many less experienced melee combat players.

      @cusman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sneedsfeedandseed1795 The closest to the combo-centric melee combat in Batman that does it better (for me) is Until You Fall.
      If you go outside of combo-centric melee combat systems then there are a number that use physics based combat like the ones Beardo covered in his video as well some others like Legendary Tales.
      There are also the brawler / boxing games and stuff like Swordsman VR, Barbaria, Paint the Town Red, and Gorn.
      The rebuttal isn't that Batman: Arkham Shadow doesn't have good melee combat. It is on the proclamation that it is the best VR (melee) combat which isn't the case to me and based on the basis of this video, to many others as well.

    Comparing this to the footage from your Batman review, I prefer your usual technique to be honest (viewed on a 28" 4K monitor). The scale on this looks wrong to me, like everything is vertically compressed. The footage from your review gave me what I assume is a more representative view of what you see from the headset, with my only criticism being that in both captures it looked a bit like you were looking up towards the ceiling the whole time (even in combat) or your height was set too tall. A bit worse In the review footage, where characters you fought were just shoulders and head at the bottom of the screen when close. Maybe you just need to tuck your chin when punching on.

The resolution is bad, the graphics very limited, the levels/tunnels have no variation, the combat systems feel like a arcady stupid mini game (punishing at numbers???😅) ...you can only deside the direction which enemy (which look all the same😢) you beat next. ...it's a 7 out of 10😅

    What you're talking about at the 9:40 mark is exactly why I prefer the combat in something like Until You Fall over Blade and Sorcery. Or with a boxing game, Knockout League over Creed. Different approach. One tries to be more 1:1 and physics based and the other is having your motions trigger animations instead. It comes across less janky and comedic which can be one of the drawbacks of VR combat design.

      And personally I disagree as 'more fun' is based on ones opinion but I'm glad you love it more! To each their own! I think batman is fun af but personally not as much as b&s (especially with mods but I guess that's not completely relevant). Although after saying that....to be honest I'm not sure I would even say I like one more than the other, as I crave both types of gameplay at different times; I guess what I SHOULD say is they both dominant in their intended game style. Both are equally fun in what they are offering the player; similar to how sometimes I prefer the gunplay of arizona sunshine and other times I want to play re8 or re4.
      I dunno, sorry for writing such a big reply. I guess I mainly was just enjoying how BB explained his reasoning for liking batmans combat more. it made sense to me.
