People need to realize in the 50’s and early 60’s Chicago was the most powerful organization in the country. They put a president in office (suspected 2), controlled everything west of the Mississippi by themselves. NYC had east coast split between 5 families. Also weird fact that’s less known when Capone ordered the murder of Frank Yale it was the first time a full auto machine gun was used in a mob hit in NYC.

Stop reading mafia fantasy books. The mob didn't get Kennedy elected . The Chicago mob didn't control all of the criminal rackets in Chicago, but they somehow controlled all of the rackets from the Mississippi River west to the Pacific Ocean! LOL 😆. There were 5 families in New York and only 1 in Chicago because the New York mob was much bigger than the Chicago mob.

@capo1376 I believe that Accardo was a secret informant for the FBI, and that's why after 1982 he was never indicted. He did the same thing that Lefty Rosenthal did.

@marcbasil, you're* wrong. He was next in line to take Joey Aiuppa's place as head of the outfit. When they thought he was going to die, they brought Tony back to Chicago to get ready to take the position as boss of the Cicero crew. He was the real head figure of the Grand Avenue crew. The reason they killed him was because it seemed like all the bosses were going down, but Tony was winning his cases. With the bosses away and Tony on the street, they would have nothing left. Guys were already taking orders from Spilotro, and a war for control was brewing. Angelo the Hook made the guys beat him to death because so many of them stood up and tried to stop the hit. If they showed any weakness, Angelo would have made that whole thing bigger. Frank Calabrese put himself in the hospital so he would have a valid excuse not to be there. They were good friends; Tony got Frank into the outfit.

@marcbasil Tony was also Accardo's favorite enforcer, one of the so-called soldiers that would speak to Accardo directly, even getting personal calls. When Tony was made, it was on the request of Tony Accardo himself, and they took the world-famous super picture of all the bosses together at the table. That picture was taken the day my grandfather, Anthony "Tough Tony" Spilotro, was made at 25 years old, the youngest guy to get his button. His rank was much higher then people just like accardos. He changed the rules of how murder would be handled it's then the outfit because known as the most violent family in the country. A mo of a outfit hit was the body was found tortured and naked he made the rule that when you kill someone you strip them of all clothing. He perfected loan sharking for the outfit and if you borrowed money for loan sharking and didn't do well you'd have to answer to spilotro.

You know nothing about Tony and how high up he really was in the outfit. He was the boss of not only Las Vegas, but the entire West Coast answered to him. In Chicago, he was known as the King of Thieves and was in control of 15 neighborhoods, including being the real boss of the Grand Avenue crew. He was Accardo's favorite enforcer and was next in line to take over the outfit. Aiuppa named him as his successor. Had Aiuppa died of that heart attack, they were putting things in order for Spilotro to take his place at the table. He was made at 25 years old on the request of Tony Accardo himself, who shared a close relationship with Tony. In the end, it was only Accardo who could have approved the hit on Spilotro, a difficult decision for Accardo to make. No other boss at the table could approve the hit.

@squirtXreynolds Tony was the enforcement arm of the outfit, period, and next in line to take Joey Aiuppa's place. They were going to hand control of Las Vegas to just anybody when they thought Aiuppa was going to pass away. He was the real boss of the Grand Avenue crew and extremely close with Aiuppa and Accardo, which is why they trusted him to take over the rackets in Las Vegas. Accardo would make phone calls to speak directly to a soldier. He beat more cases than John Gotti and had a much more fearsome reputation. He was in control of outfit business on the entire west cost. Just like accardo his position was much higher then it was let on to believe. He changed the rule book on out hits should be taken care of and what should done with the bodies. He basically with mad Sam perfect loan sharking for the outfit and it was his racket to manger if you borrow money "juice" from the outfit and didn't make good on your return you'd be seeing him. The most famous picture of the outfit with accardo auippa Harry the hump Angelo the hook all seated together that picture was taken the day spilotro got made. The call to make him came from Tony accardo and the only one that could of approve the hit on spilotro was accardo. They had much bigger things planned for him. Not to mention him bigging in control of the outfits biggest investment las vegas which he operated for 15 years without a problem. Longer then anyone else before him. And he still had duties in Chicago accardo would personally call him back to Chicago from las vegas to deal with big issues. Accardo would speak to just any solider.

Brilliant documentary about the Outfit, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this documentary but, I have to say that, I don’t know how anyone could make a documentary on the rise of the Outfit in Chicago without giving Murray (the camel) Humphreys a mention, he was to the Outfit what Costello was to New York, he wasn’t known as Mr Fixer for nothing, he was the man who fixed parole for Ricca and the other top players of the Chicago Outfit in the Hollywood extortion case, and he was also very close to Paul Ricca who made Humphreys the number 3 guy, the consigliere of the Outfit which is not bad for a Welshman considering you normally have to be Italian to get anywhere in any of the organised crime family’s of America, for what he really achieved in and for the Outfit in Chicago, believe me he is a very underrated gangster if not the most underrated gangster in America, he was also the guy that came up with the saying, I respectfully decline to answer in case my answer may incriminate me, and he travelled all over America teaching the top Italian gangsters how to say it, some say he was a racketeer but he wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger on someone if that’s what he thought was deserved, a very underrated player of organised crime in America that’s for sure.

Plus, he came to fame in Vegas (I know Chicago ran parts of it) and you focused more on him than the thousand of other Outfit men (Big Jimm Callisimo, Frankie Yale, even more on Frank Nitti).Lazy doc.
