I didn't realise he suffered from fornication for 8 years but from reading his book on Monastic Wisdom I had a hunch that might have been the case. He had such intense devotion to the Panagia as well & she even appeared to him a few times. He is truly a very devote loving monastic. Saint Joesph intercede for us overlook my many sins & offense that God may bring me true repentance as he did you after your struggles
He suffered from temptations and thoughts related to fornication, he didn't suffer from fornication in the sense that he physically fell (just in case that wasn't clear). Elder Ephraim mentioned he went through something similar. It seems to be a common thing for hermits to have to resist and overcome.
Mt Athos, although a well-spring of holiness, is indeed also commonly called a desert in Greece. Very harsh terrains outside of the coenobial settings aka the monasteries. If i'm not mistaken Katounakia (where his spiritual son Saint Ephraim of Katounakia lived) and Kavsokalyvia (where Saint Porphyrios came from and passed away to heavenly glory) are some of the harshest. Mt Athos' saints are indeed the heart of modern-day desert holiness. Although anyone, to their own capacities aided by God's Grace, can become sanctified and holy as proven by Saint Porphyrios' majority of life being spent in downtown Athens (Omonoia square) and Saint Evmenios living in another area near Athens in service to lepers, Aigaleo.
@Seraphim Hamilton thank you for this great video. I had a questions apart from this topic. I know you are quite knowledgeable when its comes to the historicity of the Bible and manuscript traditions and so on. Do you have any suggestions for book that talk about the different variations between the septuagint/hebrew bible and just the historicity of the Old Testament in general. Thank you!
Do any easterners know the reason behind the long side burns and shaven chin beard style being present on more than a few of your elders? Is this one of the traditions of yours or where does this practice come from? Dimitrios Arhondonis comes to mind from the sight of the thumbnail image.

My family and I desperately need St Joseph’s prayers. Intercede for us and save us, O righteous father Joseph.

Oh thanks for the clarification that makes sense
I'm currently reading the expansive life of the saint that's in hardback. This monk lived like the desert fathers; it's hard-core

I definitely need to read more of st Joseph, the demon of fornication bugs me every day on the journey of celibacy
