This is an old form of jazz called 'Swing'. It goes back to the 30's - 40's when my mom would go to Roseland Ballroom to dance and listen to the 'Big Bands' that played there. When the orchestra took a break, a female soloist would take the stage and be accompanied by a few musicians. She would then perform this type of slower tempo 'Swing' until the full orchestra returned and did their standard up tempo 'Swing' songs.
