  • Hola mi genteeee! First off, Merry Christmas!! I hope you all had a wonderful time with your family and friends!
I came across this article that talked about whether or not Puerto Ricans speak the "ghetto version" of Spanish. Here are my thoughts.

I am Puerto Rican born and raised in PR and I can tell you our Spanish is Americanized, just like everything else on the island. It’s driven language purists crazy for years but, to me, it’s just another thing that makes us different and special.

Colombia 🇨🇴 has different regions, each one has very very different accents linguistic words slangs jokes, not everybody speaks like JBalvin, the Medellin accent. The other 2 artists being Colombians too, are from another city Cartagena, in the north coast of Colombia. Some PR people say Cartagena accent is very similar to PR people.

The caribbean and PR dialect of Spanish was most heavily influenced by the Spanish of the 🇮🇨 Canary Islands. So do not adhere to the bullcrap of those that say how you pronounce the word determines if you are ghetto or not.

Girl I took my Puerto Rican Spanish to Spain. I grew up in the ghetto, in New York City. I had been told my whole life by non-Spanish speaking teachers that I spoke a dialect. So my expectation was that I would not be understood.. The friend I went to Spain with had been there many times. He had many Spanish friends who he introduced me to and we understood each other very well. Oh, before I forget, I went to Paris with my sister a couple of years later and was approached by a French women, who spoke to us in Spanish too, For a long time I didn't want to speak Spanish because I did know its value. Now I speak Spanish whenever I can with neighbors, coworkers, and friends.

Glad to see you making videos about the Spanish language, well done.
Most of the Spanish speakers who live on the coast (Colombia, Venezuela, DR, PR, etc) speak with the same characteristics (dropping the 'd' and 's', etc) , and your comment about the influence of African languages on Spanish makes a lot of sense.
Looking forward to more videos like this.

Our Spanish is an older versión of Spanish from the colonization days Some Spaniard came to Puerto Rico and he fell in love because he was hearing words he hasn't heard from other Spanish speaking countries look that up and we have a big community of people from the Cannary islands they use ito at the end of words and i think a lot of our speech patterns come from them.🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

New to your channel and subscribed! :-) You make some great points about our country's language and I'm glad you mentioned England and how their English is different. Language is almost like playing the game 'telephone'. At some point in time, things are going to change or be omitted. In addition, the origins of our language are different, especially with Taino, African, and Spaniard influence, so we have to be more accepting of these differences and embrace them. I am fluent in both languages even though I grew up in NYC but I sometimes get 'feedback' from those who are not P-rican that say we don't speak Spanish 'well'. Potato/'Potatoe'...it's the same thing in the end! Thanks for being so open and honest...we talk about this in my fam all the time! :-)

You’re super right about why PRs speak the way they do. All Latin American dialects are influenced by Indigenous and African languages. A Lot of Mexican Spanish is derived from Náhuatl (Aztec), Dr, PR, Colombia, and Cuba have Taino + African influences. There is no such thing as “proper” Spanish. We all have our own way of speaking Spanish and i think it’s beautiful

Natalia ! ;)

3:28 - 5:00 PREACHHH! I’m not a boricua but as a latina who’s grown up in LA the same thing has happened for Mexicans here where 2nd & 3rd generation slowly lose that connection with the culture due to not being able to speak the language. It’s honestly very important for us latinos to preserve the language & our culture especially PR culture & language since PR is already small & they have such easy access to the US the language & culture is lost much faster. So glad to see a Puerto Rican here encouraging Boricuas as well as other latinos to learn the language to have that connection with the culture because it really is important!

Why is that? I notice the Mexican men don't like Puerto Riquenos. Like a jealousy or rivalry. I'm Puerto Rican and my wife is Mexican and I love my Mexican family and I have friends that are like brothers that are Mexicano.

Raw Barber exactly bro I notice that too but it’s a new age and generation I think it’s just jealousy because most Mexicans and people like Salvadorians and from Honduras they come here and don’t have papers and work harder so they think that Puerto Rican’s think they are better but not all people are like that I hate nationalism so much bro like we’re deadass collectively one and I’m not gonna cap I see that too but it’s tome too end that you feel me we should spread love to everyone on matter what race, complexion, or sexuality we should treat each other like family and I think being born in the states most of us that are here are coo but there will always be those people from every race that maintain that idea it’s just love here tho and I’m glad you have a happy marriage we should be able to love who we want to

@@juanflorestv8876 amen to that hermano! I never thought I was better than any Latino because my family never needed papers! I lost a few close friends of mine that were Mexicanos to being deported and they had been here for years and are married with children. They are still in Mexico and for one it's already been almost two years and for the other it's been a few months. And it hurt their families, their children and to be honest it pissed me off. Great hardworking guys that are even very Americanized that got profiled for being in an area for work that was to white so someone called. It really hurt their families and especially their sons and daughters. So I never took or take that aspect for granted. And I will also say that Mexicans,Salvadorans and Hondurans do work very hard and would do whatever it takes for them and their family to have a better life here in America. I'll say it they work harder than anybody! Not only am I married to a chicana mexicana but my uncle is also Mexican too. My wife's family although are Mexican her aunts both married Puerto Ricans so it's a big mix for the holidays as we have Puerto Rican food,Mexican food Corridos, salsa, merengue and mariachi and musica tipica! It's a beautiful thing! My cousin is married to a guy from Guadalajara Mexico. This narrative doesn't stand in our family one bit bro! Our community is HEAVY Latino. Mostly Puerto Rican but alot of Mexicans have moved here over the last ten years or so and then you have some other Latino cultures sprinkled in. Hondurans,Ecuadorians, some Salvadorans and Domincans. We even have a few families out here from Spain. But very Latino heavy! Alot of great Mexican and Puerto Rican resterraunts out here to choose from and plenty of stores that carry all of our spices and seasonings and ingredients along with pastries and other things. Most of the younger Mexicanos and guys my age don't carry that rivalry mindset as they are mingled in with the boricua's just fine it's more of the older ones and not even all of them just certain ones. But appreciate your comment bro and you are what's right with the world homie! Keep being you and being positive! Saludos!

Not all Colombians speak the same. The part of Colombia that is surrounded by the Caribbean sea is very different from places like Medellin, which is where people like J Balvin or Karol G are from. Us costeños speak more similarly to other caribbean islands or cultures. To say that ALL Colombians speak the most proper spanish is false.

Nice job. I'll look at the links. Thanks. I think that Puerto Rican Spanish AND English speech varies by education and the region of the Island or the States the individuals live in. I used to think the S drop was an Afro influence, but I've also read that some of the dialect, i.e. the dropped S and the "ao" ending instead of "ado," comes from the origins of the Spaniards from the Canary Islands and possibly Andalusia. The Decima form of Jibaro singing in P.R. and Cuba comes from the Canary Islands, as I understand it. Wikipedia has some good info.

I mostly agree that Puerto Ricans born in states speak terrible Spanish. Caribbean Spanish is known for people dropping "s" and not rolling the "r". This does not make it wrong. If you learn how to read and write the Spanish and listen to how other countries speak Spanish it amazing how much you can improve your Spanish. Just listen to Daddy Yankee speak Spanish and than listen to Luis Fonsi or Ricky Martin and you think they were on different islands. Your education usually dictates how well you speak any language.

To a couple of your points, being 2nd generation, not born on The Island and not taught the language growing up, learning it in adulthood, I can attest to it being like living in a black and white world without the color (like old 50’s tv shows before they came up with color TV sets) of the language, the culture, etc that makes life it’s best! 2nd point, the way we speak Spanish is unique and I think it enhances our culture, there is ZERO need to be shamed!! Puerto Rican Spanish is my favorite style... but I may be a slight bit biased.....

Soy Cubana y Boricua. The Spanish we speak has absolutely no s's at the end, we actually eat them! we speak a Caribbean Spanish that has an African and Canary Island Spanish flavor. Its kind of like African Americans who don't say "doors" and "floors" instead saying doe and floe. It's more relaxed especially in Cuba. Our language has a swag that I personally love. When I speak to Mexicans and other non Caribbean people they look at me like I'm crazy until I switch over to more "proper" Spanish. We Caribbeans speak swag Spanish lol!
