A bit of confusion in the comments. ED Sheeran wrote THE WHOLE SONG! By himself. He [gave] it to Justin who made ADJUSTMENTS. Those slight adjustments are why he's a "co-writer". In an interview with Grime entertainer Stormzy he stated that he heard Ed sing that song from Ed way before Justin released it.
I'm sure Justin can can write songs as well...but this probably isn't one of them.

I think where confusion lies is in the fact that Ed wrote it for his own album, then decided against it, and gave it to Bieber. Bieber, Sheeran, and Benny Blanco then refined it further, with Bieber and Blanco getting a writing credit as well for the final product. That's what I read anyway, about how the song in its final version came to be.

It was never Justin's song to begin with. Ed wrote, composed and sung it as a demo first, then gave it to Justin as the original "Fuck Yourself" thinking it would be more his style than Ed's. Yes, Love Yourself was written by Ed. But Justin singing it was amazing, and now so is Ed singing it amazing. Why shame an artist just because another artist wrote their song? We shouldn't.. Ed did such an amazing job singing the song he wrote, but it was also an amazing thing, that he himself, decided to "give" the song to a fellow artist. *Both* of them sang the song really well.
