    Your videos are so professional and informative…thank you! I love your combination of video, verbal descriptions and maps which make very confusing history, clear. I was at Chickamauga in 2012 and deeply regret not spending more time touring the battlefield. It is too late for me, thanks to you for filling the gaps.

    If the South should lose this war then the story of our heroic struggle will be told by the enemy Our children will be taught by Northern schoolteachers their version of the war They will learn of it through Northern textbooks and will come to regard our honored dead as traitors and our gallant wounded as fit subjects for derision Whats worst of all everyone will think this war was all over Slavery instead of against Big government
    General Patrick Cleburne

    • @ProjectPast1565
      @ProjectPast1565  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A very wise quote that sometimes rings true. However, an interesting thing about the Civil War is the south had the opportunity to control the narrative for much of the post war years. Cleburne also had a very different mindset on the war than most southern generals and politicians. To him and many other soldiers fighting for that matter, it was truly about independence or defending their homes. This is evidenced by the fact Cleburne was willing to sacrifice the South's slaves and arm them to save it’s independence while most in the CSA hierarchy would not. It was so unpopular, that he was told to keep his ideas to himself if he had any intentions to keep his commission. Cleburne is a fascinating person to learn about. An extremely competent commander that should have no doubt advanced higher through the ranks than a division commander.
      There are many reasons why individual soldiers fight and those reasons are important to learn. It’s also just as important to realize regardless of how these Individuals feel about a certain cause or ideology their efforts on the battlefield further the goals of their government’s causes. Thanks for watching as always!

      @@ProjectPast1565 Lee also favored arming the Slaves There were many blacks who fought in the Confederate army

    • @ProjectPast1565
      @ProjectPast1565  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yup, he advocated for this in January of 1865. (His letter to Andrew Hunter is a very interesting read.) As the South ran out of manpower, the issue of arming the slaves became paramount. The first units were in training as the war ended.
      As far as many Black Confederate soldiers serving….there are 7 eye witness accounts of Union soldiers seeing “Black Confederate Soldiers”. Here is some good stuff from the American Battlefield Trust
      Some black Southerners aided the Confederacy. Most of these were forced to accompany their masters or were forced to toil behind the lines. Black men were not legally allowed to serve as combat soldiers in the Confederate Army--they were cooks, teamsters, and manual laborers. There were no black Confederate combat units in service during the war and no documentation whatsoever exists for any black man being paid or pensioned as a Confederate soldier, although some did receive pensions for their work as laborers. Nevertheless, the black servants and the Confederate soldiers formed bonds in the shared crucible of conflict, and many servants later attended regimental reunions with their wartime comrades.
      This is not to say that no black man ever fired a gun for the Confederacy. To be specific, in the “Official Records of the War of the Rebellion,” a collection of military records from both sides which spans more than 50 volumes and more than 50,000 pages, there are a total of seven Union eyewitness reports of black Confederates. Three of these reports mention black men shooting at Union soldiers, one report mentions capturing a handful of armed black men along with some soldiers, and the other three reports mention seeing unarmed black laborers. There is no record of Union soldiers encountering an all-black line of battle or anything close to it.
      In those same Official Records, no Confederate ever references having black soldiers under his command or in his unit, although references to black laborers are common. The non-existence of black combat units is further indicated by the records of debates in the Confederate Congress over the issue of black enlistment. The idea was repeatedly rejected until, on March 13, 1865, the Confederate Congress passed a law to allow black men to serve in combat roles, although with the provision “that nothing in this act shall be construed to authorize a change in the relation which the said slaves shall bear toward their owners,” i.e. that black soldiers would still be slaves.

      Frederick Douglas mentioned Black Confederate soldiers Anyone who says that these soldiers didn't exist needs to go back to history class

    • @ProjectPast1565
      @ProjectPast1565  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @travisbayles870 that still doesn’t support your claim of “many”. Again, the information above states there was a handful but your claim that “many fought” is incorrect. Anyone who thinks that these soldiers existed in large quantities needs to attend the same history class.
      If so many existed then why was the 1st Louisiana Native Guard denied entry into the CSA Army as soldiers?The were a local militia group composed of socially established New Orleans Creoles, had offered to muster into Confederate service in 1862 and were flatly refused in accordance with Confederate regulations. The Confederate Secretary of War, James Seddon, recognized the legal and cultural impossibility of accepting these Black men into potential combat roles and specified that they could, according to the law, only be utilized as laborers and not as soldiers.
