I love Chris and BMW but he's wrong its hecking ugly
I'm on my 3rd M3 (F80) and I would have loved to make it four cars. But, this new generation is hideous in the front and boring around the sides/rear. If I wanted AWD and an automatic I'd buy an Audi! I wanted RWD and a manual, which is why I love BMW. Alas, those days are gone it seems.
The ‘character’ they make Harris play on Top Gear is so degrading - its lovely to hear him talking cars genuinely ( without being bullied by those two clowns)

Alpina is going to make a killing by selling their B3 Touring.
Not necessarily. I mean, the B3 is now available for ages, so an M3 Touring will actually partly enter Alpina's market. But then again, these are totally different cars with totally different characters. You can't really compare an M model with an Alpina.

Alpina isn't a volume player and never intends to be, so you won't ever see a discount and in the real world the M3 Touring will be at least 40% cheaper on finance.

The original trio was good because they had chemisty between them.
The current trio has a good relationship between them and that makes the show watchable. not nearly as good as the Hammong, May, Clarkson but miles better than the hosts they had in the past few seasons

@RS2002 BMW M was never aimed at being mass market though. You can't be angry at a high end brand for charging high end prices. It's just how it is
@RS2002 that's interesting to see from a UK perspective about pricing. I'm in Australia and we get ripped off by Porsche here. A 911 starts at $267k whilst an M3 and M4 will be around the $160k mark. Big difference in price. The c63's are $170k as well.
For us here it's well worth $100k cheaper for a driving experience which is near enough a 911 whilst being to fit the kids in the back.

The design is a bit of a statement don't get me wrong. Its not beautiful but it's a statement indeed. I'm partial to the JDM culture so I don't mind it hahah but I can see it's not for everyone

When I first seen the headlights on the F30 back in 2012, I thought they were brutal, made the nose look droopy and ugly, especially compared to my E39, it just didn’t look like a BMW, i quickly looked at and drove the equivalent Audi and Mercedes, then quickly looked away because in reality they were crap and boring. I ended up buying an F30 and within a week I thought it was actually beautifully proportioned being both elegant and aggressive at the same time, it takes a while for the lines to make sense and I really am not convinced by this grill but it will look amazing and modern in a year or two. BMW know what they are doing!
This. BMW isn’t a juggernaut for nothing. Nobody owns them and THEY own Rolls Royce.
I think the new big grille M4/M3 is getting a lot of flak because it’s incredibly jarring. Yet, everyone says in person it looks amazing. I guess they grille is more 3D in person.
Besides, in a few years-you park the last gen M3 or an E90 M3 next to this new M4/M3 and those cars will look extremely outdated. Not in a bad way, just immediately you’ll know it’s “not the new one”.
BMW is more brilliant that we give them credit for sometimes. They’re like Apple.
The thing is the f30 doesn't need huge bumper on the front, the headlights are enough to make it aggressive

I am so happy for chris, watching him over the years being a journalist with smaller companies, to self sufficient youtube journalism, too finally reaching the pinnacle of automotive journalism. I do miss Chris Harris on cars though, was great.

E92 is the best !
The E92 is the best looking BMW ever made and the engine....oh well...Chris forgot the 1M is also cheap built compared to the E92.
E92 was nicer than E90, and much more in character with the V8. Both also, in retrospect, benefited from being the last M3s which didn't suffer the indignity of spending their sickly, muted lives hooked up to a ventilator.
But the V8 made them a bit too engine driven. A bit too AMG, or perhaps even wannabe supercar. The latter being why the coupe form suited it better than the more subdued sedan.
The V8 was also too thirsty, per tank size, to function optimally as a GT out in the open, which is where that much pace makes sense.
Top Gear should be renamed Chris Harris on Cars. Get these other jabronis outta here.
You mean go back to very old Top Gear when it was an informative car show? As much as I'm with you on that, the reason for the reboot under Clarkson and co originally, was because no one wanted that format any more.

@@joachimsoubari3772 Chris Bangle designed the E92, the most beautiful and timeless 3 series coupe ever made. I've loved it since day one. Still driving mine today.

@@elcapitan711 It had the range of a Tesla..... At similar speeds, the then new Panamera (I know, more of an M5) went twice as far on a tank. The V8 M3's range was short enough to be downright bothersome, in the Western USA. Which was one of the last paces where you could use that sort of performance much.
The M3 is, also, too small of a car for a V8. Just as it is (or at least should be) too small of a car, for a blown 6 with 480hp. That even Chris Harris who, as opposed to me, supposedly knows how to drive fast, clamor for 4 wheel drive, rather proves my point. BMW should keep the M3 in the E36/E46 (and E28.....) realm, as far as power goes. A fast RWD ROAD car, and optimized for it. Only add power, to the extent tires improves. Then, if necessary, do an Audi (S->RS) for the spec sheet, and "alpha," crowd. Don't call it an Ms., though.......
E92 had an exciting engine, no denying that but in terms of driving dynamics and weight other M3s are better in my opinion. I remember watching a video of a BMW engineer explaining all the improvements in body rigidity and suspension that the f80 has over the e92 and plus even though the f80 is a saloon it still weighs less than the e92. A lot of people don’t like the f80 because the engine is turbocharged which I can understand but as an overall package I prefer the f80. I also think the f80 looks better than the e92 with its flared rear arches and super aggressive front.
The grills on the new BMW look like rabbits teeth.

@@leweee I guess that’s why on any given day at the Nurburgring you’ll see a bunch of track prepped E92’s tearing up the track. Keep in mind that the S65 V-8 is lighter and better positioned in the car than the E46 inline 6

I totally agree with Chris that F80 M3 is a gem. I've owned one for over 3 years & I love it. I use it for track days & daily living. It does everything I need & more. Plus there are tunes that make it much better in every aspect such as Bootmod3 & Thor. A set of Michelin PS4S tires are also a great fit on this chassis.
What he said about the one series m and I have always felt that way it's the reason I need to get my hands on a one series.
Doesn't even have to be an M, I'll take a 135i. Those are special as well.

I think 🤔 if the height of the new M3/M4 grill was a bit shorter, it would allow the hood to slope further down and join the front in better unison, kinda like the sloping 8 series front grill. All the design engineers needed to do was that and the mug would look a ton more appealing.
Fast wagon is the best. Dream wagon is 2018 RS6. Favourite wagon I owned was 1996 Mitsubishi Legnum VR4.
Still like Jezza, Hammond and May more. But Chris is a good presenter

Do you remember when the little 1 series was introduced, everyone thought it was ugly, five years later every other car was a 1 series. Facelift E46 touring Sport is the prettiest touring Bmw have made though imo
I am saying this as someone who really hates the new front end.
However, I have to agree with Chris' remarks on how it will grow on people. BMW have always had this knack for refusing to create retro designs even when people beg for them, instead insisting that new future looks are better. They design a car that looks like nothing anyone has seen before, and the reaction is as negative as you could expect. But guess what, the car ends up selling well. And even more than that, 10 years later, we begin to like them. I used to think the E60, E63/4 and E65 looked awful, but now I have an appreciation for them looking back. To think that BMW had the nerve to induce such stylistic whiplash by going from the taut and composed looks of the E38 to the wavy and flowing shape of the E65. It's hard to think that the BMWs before 2000 are just one generation behind those that came in after 2000.
So, do I think the new M3 and 4 series look awful? Yes. I even saw a 420i last week and the rear was the only slightly redeeming part of it. But I must refrain from having such confidence in the belief that it will always be an ugly car. It will grow on people.

I completely agree with Chris re: the front end of the 3/4-series. The M variants look less hideous than the base models. What I can't forgive BMW for is losing the Hofmeister Kink on the M4. What are they thinking?!

In actual fact the F87 M2 is the most successful M car of this generation, outselling the M3 and M4 combined.

Harris, Clarkson and Needell - do fast new cars (Needell can do the laps instead of Stig)
Butler-Henderson - does a motor sport news section and gets to drive rally cars etc
May and Wollard - do New family and practical car reviews
Wilson - does the second hand car market section
Hammond - does a motorbike section

It could be a grower if it has a matching rear-end design. Currently it just like two different cars, when seen from behind and front. But honestly, I think BMW will be "forced" to re-design the grill to maintain a positive sales.

Typical motoring hack, an almost “let them eat cake” perspective that’s totally out of touch with real-world car *ownership*.
You can’t call an M3 a “great” car after being its custodian for only 1 year.
Try actually owning a contemporary BMW AFTER the 3-year warranty expires, not basing your opinion on 12 months with a loaner from BMW’s press fleet.
And no, a 2011 1M doesn’t count either.

Note the word ‘after’, which does not mean he should run the car as a daily for 3 years.
A car that’s “great” to drive isn’t always “great” to own *after* the warranty’s expired - eg, F10 M5.

Agreed, the only problem is that M3 with 4x4 will not be available with manual and Chris probably does not know. So it will be a big dilemma - manual or 4x4? I've got the F80 and it is exciting car, but as Chris says, once it rains, it is so hardly manageable. Adding 4x4 will solve it, but I still want a manual :-(
