My personal favorite mentor in fiction is Izumi Curtis from Fullmetal Alchemist, she's so blunt and aggressive but she forces the Elric brothers to understand the fundamentals of alchemy and what it means to control a core part of the world around them. Also, Jay, I'm gonna drive to your house and kick your ass for including That Clip.

There is this Batman movie where The Riddler and Two Face mentor each other throughout, from how to throw a punch all the way to how to manipulate the caped crusader. Neither could be considered wise in these portrayals.
when my character Silas, an old kind Alchemist artificer died all the players at the table started crying or went silent, I was so proud o the character i created and the effect this kind of charter has on a party is amazing
A very important tool you have as someone in an RPG is that at any point, you can talk to the other players. The kind of games I run are very character-oriented, and I'm often asking my players what's going on in their characters' heads not just so that I know, but so that I can set up what's going on in the world to help nudge character development in the way those players want it to go. In one campaign I had a very personal-freedom type PC alongside an old soldier type, both with very conflicting views about how life in general should be conducted which meant a lot of arguing in combat. Eventually, at one point I had an NPC make the observation that neither of them was really getting to know the other, they'd just made assumptions based on their own experience, so they weren't getting anywhere. After that observation they both paused, thought about it, and decided to actually try to understand the other because at the core what the characters wanted was the group to work well together. It didn't take me having a self-help guidebook or something next to me, just knowing what the actual problem was.
A long time ago I made an High Elf Monk who was a wizard in the distant past, however his connection to the weave was severed when he attempted to aid his son with achieving a great feat of magic, in the resulting explosion of weave energy that killed his son and severed his connection to the weave. When he comes across the party he was just an NPC that joined the party for a few quests but when i played him as a character he became a permanent part of the group with his reasoning for joining the party being that he saw his son in the wizard of the party. However he outwardly said that he joined them to see the world.
...oh my god, I think my first DnD character is on an arc to become a mentor. She's got this motherly, protective vibe where it hurts her to see people hurting so she desperately wants to learn about their problems and help them get through those problems; but her empathy... frankly doesn't have healthy limits. She still has lessons to learn for herself, most immediately that she simply can't expect herself to help *everyone,* especially if she can't help herself.
She would fit nicely next to my OC who's a small child sized person who desperately has to help children due to a haunting memory of there homeland being uprooted an all families ripped apart three cheers for unhealthy bonding over disorders

The quick and dirty way to come across as wise is this: ask questions, never give statements. And when in doubt, rephrase someone's last statement back to them.
The Agatha Christie character Miss Marple is great at this. She sees what is happening, says it reminds her of someone, usually a postmaster's daughter, or a widowed neighbor, or an apprentice parson, or the grocer, back in her village of St. Mary Mead. This is often kind if laughed at, as they're currently investigating the murder by poisoned tennis racket of a duchess, but then she tells a simple story about human interaction and how a seemingly mild mannered person can allow resentment or pain to fester until "well, it was certainly an unpleasant affair for their family". The detective then realizes she sees the situation behind the situation, the interaction of people and their problems. She also advises you g people in this way, asking many questions, leading them to think her a bored or gossipy old woman, then tells a seemingly unrelated story, but our young hero or heroine see their way through the muck and make it work with their love interest, and by the end when they tell Miss Marple that they are in love, or announce their engagement, she's already knitting something for their future children and promising to wrote them a card every Christmas.
There is a learning method called Maieutics or the Socratic Method, that at its core it means to get to the deeper truth by asking questions, it usually ends until the person cannot answer the questions anymore, has an answer so profound that no further questions are needed, or a plan of action is established
Based on your Maes Hughes episode, I created a young, fatherly character for the party, and I think this video is a good accomany to that as it guides the way he would have been taught to coexist with others and help.

It's kind of funny, as most of it is Socrates leading Meno up to certain points and realizations just to disprove them and poke fun of him for thinking that way in an almost comedic manner. With him going every once in a while: "but y'know, this is just a friendly conversation between friends". There's another point in the dialogue where another member joins the convo just to spout political jargein about the sophists and then leaves. Anyways, it's a fun read littered with interesting philosophical discoveries.
Caduceus to this day remains my favorite critical role character ever made. A group that desperately needed someone to lean on for guidance. Caduceus saved campaign 2 imo.
Step 1 create joint back story with another player. Step 2 become beloved by the party early on Step 3 nod to the dm when time is right Step 4 BBEG shows up earl then,, as secretly planned with DM, hsve the mentor killed to unite the party/ motivate theirs thirst for vengeance

This video dropping right as I plan to play an Iroh-esque Wise monk character.. Coincidence, I think not 😂. The video touched on all the reasons why I am not too sure on this archetype. Not being able to relate to that level of serenity and to borrow from Kung Fu Panda "Inner Peace". Plus a character like this, is there to prop up others so playing that as a character is difficult for me. While I do take certain steps to make sure I can include others in the table in my story, for me ultimately it is my story. (Honestly, the main reason why I wanna play this archetype, to push myself.. ). Then there is the issue of me sounding like a douche, or holier than thou which is something I don't know how to navigate around. Playing as a wise old guy sharing his pearls of wisdom for the benefit of others can make me seem uppity which I wanna avoid. Finally, the biggest problem with this idea is most mentor characters have already lived their life, seen and learnt from the world. There is very little journey that they can go through. You can always learn new things, but I feel like the idea kinda limits the amount of personal growth my character will have and I am definitely not ok with that
I’ve been building a mentor/mother figure character for a while now (hope to play her soon). My advice for not to come across as a douche is to focus on learning, the teaching will come by itself. Ask questions, try to get to know the other characters and the world. Drop hints here and there about stuff you might have lived. Offer that you can give advice, instead of giving it unasked. Make characters curious so they ask YOU for advice. And then you can drop the lessons. And idk, about the lack of character development maybe either give some sort of flawed belief (that doesn’t impede their teachings) or make the development more about their relationship to other characters. My character for example has lost a child in the past and starting to become a mother figure to a party member. I wanna play with her old fears reawakening. She might have learned her painful lessons in theory but in practice? 🤷🏽♀️ Idk if any of this helps, either way I wish you a great time playing!

I don’t think EGtWM was ever official dnd content because the subclasses on D&Dbeyond always had that critical roll symbol and text stating it was unofficial content when looking at the subclasses

The best example of a ttrpg version of this I've seen is Cadeusus, as a morality mentor to the mighty nine

I don't see how this archetype could be a PC. I feel like said character would have to be 5 levels above everyone.
Well, wisdom does not necessarily equal power, experience is not equivalent to physical competency.
Teach How to think not What to think.
