These old wins are precious when the fans ran out on to the ice and hugged players. You could really see how much it meant to the players and a city.

I was 10, Gene Hart and Kate Smith, great stuff, good memories growing up across the river in Jersey, Clark, Dupont, Barber, Schultz and Bernie, I know I'm missing half the team but theose guys rocked.

I was there, the greatest sporting event that I had ever seen. Also, the best event at the Spectrum too.I sat in Section 5,row 2,seat 6.I still remember the save that Bernie made on Ken Hodge with 3 minutes left. It was right in front of me. The best save I think that a goaltender ever made!

I read that the Flers Stanley Cup drew 2 million people to the championship parade a few days later saying that this was the biggest event in Philly up to that point. Although winning the Cup was monumental how was it more exciting than the Eagles titles of 1948, 1949 and 1960. Was it that the NFL was not as embraced back then as it has been since the merger in 1970. Your thoughts.

Nice to have 2 of each or more per league. Can't help but have a winner in there.
Philly is a one team town per. Do or die, always a Philly fan regardless. True love, true joy, true pain. Wouldn't have it any other way.

  • @gcdcjccc

Legend has it that several Bruins players were suffering from the Philly flu during that 74' series but management forced them to play regardless. most notably Hodge,Cashman, Schmautz, O'Reilly, Donny Marcotte, Dallas Smith, Gilles Gilbert, Rick Smith..........lol

Flyers won in 1975, beating the Buffalo Sabres in 6. They also reached the final in 1976 but were swept by Montreal in 4 straight. After that they reached finals in 1980, 1985, 1987 & 1997, losing every time. Those 70s Flyers had some talent (Clarke, Barber, Parent) but will always be remembered as 'The Broad Street Bullies' - a squad of thugs.

back in the seventies, during the Broad Street Bullies era many opposing players were scared shitless to play the Flyers and would mysteriously fall ill. Symptoms usually included shitting your pants the day of the game, trembling at the mere sight of the Spectrum, vomiting in between periods......etc lol

@PirateProf - I clearly remember the Flyers playing the Atlanta Flames back in that day. In fact, the Flames were originally named after the fiery destruction left behind by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's men as his Yankee troops marched through Georgia during the Civil War.

very true Mega Wolfgang, Montreal were about the only team that were NOT intimidated by the bullies. in fact in that 1976 final the Flyers couldn't match the Habs physically let alone skate with them. in my previous comments was i was really referring to the pre 76 Flyers.

Damn I remember that day well, on Frankford Ave in the Mayfair section on NE Philly, at the intersection of Cottman and Frankford aves, I was only 10 years old, hand slapping , horse cops controlling the crowd, it was wild, streakers running wild, etc. Than, they beat the Sabers in 1975 for the Stanley Cup, not much fanfare for that one, dunno why?

"...and, in what was the greatest championship celebration in the history of sport, 2 million people jammed the streets of the city to cheer the victors in a glorious parade of heroes"
it's been awhile since we've won one here, but expect philly's next championship, especially if it's the eagles or flyers, to top the above statement.

  • @PirateProf

@ToBaCa12 -The Flyers were in the Campbell Conference (which held the Patrick & Smythe divisions) while the Bruins were in the Wales Conference (Adams division, the other division in this conf. was the Norris). That's how they were able to face off against each other for the Cup.
The NHL went to East/West format in the late 90's.

    • @Lava1964

There weren't 12 original teams - there were just 6:
Bruins, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Canadiens, Rangers and Maple Leafs.
The expansion to 12 teams happened in 1967 and added the Kings, the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars), the Oakland Seals (now defunct), the Flyers, the Penguins and the Blues.

@ToBaCa12 At the time, the NHL put the top 16 teams in the league in the playoffs, no matter what conference they were in (Now it's the top 8 from each conference), so two teams from the same conference could make it to the stanley cup. I'm pretty sure that the Flyers at this point, as well as every other expansion team were considered the Western Conference.

FROM JAY IN BOSTON................after we knocked the Flyers out in 4 straight 1977, we sent them on summer vacation in 1978 . After game 5 1978 in Boston, Jimmy Watson said
"WE'RE NOT THE TEAM WE USED TO BE"
In the NHL Playoffs one mantra remains:
YOU WILL GO AS FAR AS YOUR GOALTENDER TAKES YOU! Bernie Parent won those two Cups for his team. But when Gerry Cheeves returned from the WHA in 1977, it was bye bye BERNIE....................

@BostonGarden the flyers were undoubtedly the diriest players in the game (bobby clarke in particular). That being said, 3rd man in or not, those were the "rules" of the day. If the other team were too afraid to jump in, then shame on them............all that being said, were you upset in Jan. 1976 when the Flyers DOMINATED the USSR with their style of play?
