How Horrifying Is Caning In Singapore? Offenders Tend To Weaken After 3 Strokes

  • Singapore is renowned as one of the safest countries globally, primarily due to its strict laws and severe penalties for various offenses.
One notable form of corporal punishment employed in Singapore is caning. It has been observed that offenders tend to weaken after experiencing three strokes, with fewer remaining conscious after six strokes.
How horrifying is caning in Singapore?
Why do offenders prefer to stay in prison rather than face sentencing?

to clarify on micheal fay, he also vandalised 18 cars. while this may not sound that serious for those in other countries, cars in singapore are VERY pricey to own (the car itself costing an average of $125300 (sgd) in 2021, and the cirtificate of entitlement to own a car ranging from $65000-106000 (sgd). note that the certificate of entitlement is only for 10 years and not a lifetime)

@@ms9001 in Singapore, Can I Carry or Possess Weapons for the Purpose of Self-Defence?
You are not allowed to carry weapons for the purpose of self-defence. Under the right of self-defence, you are allowed to defend yourself, or your property, against an offence.
However, you are not allowed to use greater force than necessary to defend yourself. Thus, the use of a weapon to defend yourself, whether the weapon is an imitation one or real, might be considered excessive if the attacker was not using a weapon against you.
Even if you do not use the weapon, possessing a weapon for self-defence (e.g., simply carrying it in your bag) will still be a criminal offence.
If the police finds the weapon on you, and you have no lawful purpose for possessing it and do not have a permit to carry it out of the house, you may be charged with an offence punishable by up to 3 years’ jail and at least 6 strokes of the cane. The weapon will also be disposed of.
If a police officer has reasonable grounds to believe that you are in possession of an offensive weapon (i.e. any item that is likely to cause hurt), he may stop and search you or your vehicle without a warrant for it.

Even Being in the company of, or consorting with, someone who is carrying offensive weapons such as knives in public, which presumes that you knew that the other person carried the weapon, you oso will be given the same sentence he/she gets for carrying the offensive item/weapon..
So means even if u are not the one who is in possession of a knife, but ur friend is, and you know about it, if they get caught and arrested and charged in court.. you too will be implicated n get the same charge as them.

Singapore was part of Malaysia. A few decades ago it broke away and became a new, stand alone , independent country (1965). The new prime minister Lee Kwan Yew (Spelling?) wanted to clean up what was becoming a corrupt crime infested s^*thole, and imposed strict laws, a policy of prosecuting criminal offenses, and the imposition and execution of the penalties. I am unsure who or when or how the rattan punishment started off. But it has definitely been under publicly elected Singaporean control for those decades, and they appear to be happy with it. Otherwise their parliament would have prohibited this punishment. They have a democratic vote over there, a system they inherited from the British. (Historically a lot of the countries and parts of countries had leaders that just ruled by decree of that person, so they have it pretty good these days)
Britain did introduce caning/rattan to SIngapore in mid 19th century, at a time when the British had caning and whipping punishments in their own country. So the Singaporeans weren't being singled out.
According to Wikipedia : Caning remained on the statute book after Malaya became independent from Britain in 1957, and after Singapore ceased to be part of Malaysia in 1965. Subsequent legislation has been passed by the Parliament of Singapore over the years to increase the minimum strokes an offender receives, and the number of crimes that may be punished with caning. And: The cane must be under 1 inch thick. Maybe the Singaporeans are better at caning than the British? Why? Because the public peace, law and order in general appears to have been restored to a large extent in recent years. Of course there is still crime, but everyone knows what will happen if you are caught for certain offenses.

Do I have a 100 % certainty that I don't have drugs inside my backpack right now? No. It's extremely, extremely unlikely, but it's theoretically possible that I bought a backpack that was used to smuggle drugs and someone forgot to take them out.
If this happens to me in the EU, I'll spend many years in prison, but at least they'll treat me humanely. They'll encourage me to study, to develop some good hobbies and to stay in close touch with my family. If they figure out that I'm not a risk, they'll release me earlier or at least move me to a low-security prison, where the conditions are better.
If this happens to me in Singapore, they could torture or kill me.
There's no such thing as 100 % confidence in the real world. If you don't have doubts, you're not thinking deep enough.
We're not using these barbarians punishments here in the Czech Republic and still have lower general crime rates than Singapore. Only criminals using human rights as a lame excuse would disagree that this sort of punishment works to reduce criminal activities.

Militaries in the 19th century realized that corporal punishment makes good men bad and bad men worse and abandoned it. Anyone which thinks that it is somehow "necessary" in the modern age either is wilfully ignorant or one who glories in cruelty.

@@rachaeltan5462 Norway has low crime rates and corporal punishment is banned. Not only judicial and in schools, but also at home. Similarly there are places with corporal punishment with High rates of Criminality and Corporal Punishment.
Similarly Britain in 1800 had harsher punishments than Singapore (transportation to Australia for vandalism, hanging for petty theft) which moderated by 1900 as rates of criminality fell.

@@rachaeltan5462 Point is that "Harsh Penalties=/=Low Crime Rates". One anomalous outlier does not prove that, especially when we have counter examples.
Beyond that, the objective is to minimize human suffering. If you can achieve something through either A: non violent and non painful means or B: by torturing someone, even assuming that they are equally effective, you go for A. It's a simple Utilitarian calculation.

How is this torture? When u don't listen to ur parents, they cane you level 1, and yet you do crime outside, after what ur parents told you. Well canning maximum level will be taught against you for not listening and respecting your own family. It's not torture, it's call rehabilitation. My friends who was a rapist, got cane 24 times and came out become a change men. Imagine he just stayed in the prison for 4 years nothing else just sit sleep shit in the cell, he would have done it again. Look at USA, imagine if canning was it, all those gangs would be crying like a baby , ain't tough anymore scumbags
