Why Homegrown Tomatoes Are SO MUCH BETTER

  • Three factors prevent commercially grown tomatoes from getting anywhere close to homegrown: how they're bred, when they're picked, and how they're handled. We talk to tomato flavor researcher Dr. Denise Tieman of the University of Florida.

Q: How do garden tomatoes compare to canned tomatoes?
A: I want to research this topic properly and do a separate video on canned tomatoes. But certainly I think good-quality canned or cartoned tomatoes are far superior to grocery store tomatoes for most purposes. I would imagine that the tomato varieties grown for the can have better flavor, because they don't need to be bred to survive the trip from farm to consumer in their raw state. Top-level brands might also only use tomatoes grown outside and harvested in season, as opposed to tomatoes grown year-round in hot houses.
Q: So what's better for sauce-making - garden tomatoes or good canned tomatoes?
A: You'll just have to wait for Thursday's recipe video...
Q: What do you mean your garden tomatoes are salty enough because of your soil?
A: I was just guessing that maybe my soil has something to do with it. I live on the coastal plain - the ground here was recently ocean floor. But it could be any number of other factors, like the varieties I'm growing, how much rain I get, I honestly don't know. I only know that all tomatoes do contain some amount of salt naturally, and my tomatoes usually taste salty enough for me, for the purposes of eating raw. When I cook with them, I salt them.
Q: How do you grow tomatoes?
A: It's too late in the season for me to do that video. Next spring, I promise!
Q: Why do your tomato plants look kinda rough?
A: Because it's the end of my season, and because I don't spend much time caring for them. I buy seedlings from the store, plant them in cages, cover them in netting, and then leave them be. I don't weed. I don't prune. Sometimes I water if it hasn't rained in a while. But I'm a very busy person and I can't be bothered with fussy gardening. I get them going, and whatever harvest I get, I get. Also, it's hot AF here.
Q: Are you bothered by the comment memes?
A: Not at all. Memes = clicks = money. Also occasionally I see one that I think is funny.
Q: Why haven't you done Q+As on your other recent videos?
A: I've been on vacation! Did I miss anything?

@@thisiscellaich That's on the list for videos to do. Honestly, I've had great experiences with those hydroponic indoor herb kits. I grow parsley and basil outside in the summer. The secret with those is to cut them down a lot, even if you don't plan on eating them. They need frequent pruning to grow well and to stop them from going to seed. I have also have a big rosemary bush, which is really the best thing, because it lives forever, grows year-round, and requires zero care.

Hi Adam, you might not see this but I wanted to comment anyway.
I’m Italian, my family has made tomato dishes for decades and the recipes have been passed down for a long time. You have, in the span of 5 minutes, explained the most important part of tomatoes in Italian cuisine.
We personally grow a few tomato varieties (my favorite being the San Marzano) but mostly we get them from a local farmer we’ve known for some time.
Tomatoes are wonderful when done right. Good sun, water, and slightly acidic, nutritious soil makes for the most amazing fruits you’ve ever tasted, not like the mediocre store-bought ones.
    Thanks for making this video!

Some years later the house was sold and as I live in an apartment I don't have access to homegrown tomatoes and I've been missing them a lot. For years It's been my dream to have a tomato garden. I'm getting closer to this dream, maybe in an year or two, as now I finally have access to a garden to try. Nothing is more delicious than a haggard, hunch-backed, partially blind, decrepit haggis with one paw in the grave. Additionally, a humane butchering greatly reduces the flavor. Wild geriatric haggis must be dispatched by a hoard of children armed with wiffle ball bats. Takes a long time, but it's worth it. Plus, it's fun for the kids.
It's what the haggis would have wanted.

This reminds me of a story. I always hated blueberries and strawberries as they always tasted horrible. Well about 6 years ago my wife and her family went to a berry farm.. i was shocked how good they were truly shocked. I have been growing my own fruits and veg and herbs ever since. Does not save me money but we eat much better.

Here’s my passed down recipe for delicious Summertime Italian Tomato Salad: Serves the whole gang
Garden tomatoes, about 6-8 large ones
One bunch of fresh garden basil, course chopped
One red onion, sliced vertically (non-ring way)
    Olive oil, be generous
    Oregano, 5 pinches
    Black ground pepper
    Dash of salt
Mix and enjoy OR let it sit 24 hours in the fridge. Goes well at a cookout. At the end use sandwich bread to soak up juices and eat
    Thank me in the comments

Cherokee purples have been my family's favorite for at least a decade. And out of 130 plants this year, I planted almost 100 purples. That attests to the flavor. However, i tried a new breed this year that has now taken the number 1 spot. And I'm not alone in this. Old German! I always plant a mixture of german pinks, but this one is yellow with faint red markings on the skin. The red bleeds into the flesh a bit. Let me tell the best thing about these tomatoes. Cherokee purples have many seeds and lack a lot of flesh. I don't mind this, but they are not ideal for certain dishes because they lack firmness and are very juicy. The Old German has amazing firm flesh and hardly any seeds! They are the sweetest beefsteak sized tomato in the garden and I think they rival my little Sun Sugar cherries. The best BLT ever and honest to God, we've been eating BLTs 3x a week and would more if bacon prices came down. Please try this breed of tomatoes. They don't produce a lot at once, but the fruits are massive. Next year is planned out for me. 50 Old Germans, 50 Cherokee Purples, and 25 variety plants such as 6 Mr. Stripey, Lemon Boy, Mortgage Lifters, and a few cherry varieties. I only planted 6 Old Germans this year just to try and man I'm glad I did!
