How BAD were New York Saloons in the 1800s? (Back Alley Drinking Dives)

- Bad Saloons were everywhere in 1800s New York (legal and illegal). Frequented more often than any church, coffee-house or reading room, the dram-shop took a terrible toll on the lives of New York's poor. You will discover that cheap grog was sold to anyone with a few cents to buy a drink, and the owners of evil (often un-licenced) back street dives didn't much care for the law prohibiting the sale of alcohol to children either. Find out how, according to Jacob Riis in the late 1800s, police indifference at best, and political corruption at worst, kept New York flowing with rum.

My weekly bedtime story is here. Fact Feast has a unique voice like James Mason, Laurence Olivier, Orson Wells & Vincent Price. Truly one of a kind. I salute you with a drink!
Thanks Bob! It's great to have your support.
I needed this today.
Children often only had beer to curb hunger. The parents only wanted it as well...it was an awful time. The children suffered the most. Never knowing anything but hard days and worst night from birth.
Funny thing this came out on St. Patrick’s Day. ( I believe St. Patrick is credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland.) I must say, alcohol has never made a better man or woman. Just the opposite. Human beings still haven’t figured this out. 😮😮😮 Enjoyed the information, thanks. 😊
Catholicism actually. By removing all the "snakes" from Ireland...meaning killing and chasing out of all the druids. It was a genocide.
The saloon pictured at 1:33 was located in the Amityville district of New York. You can tell by the windows.
They do look similar to the windows in the movie.
Hope you're having a nice pint of Guinness today... Fact feast

You’re welcome! Thanks for your comment.
Hiya Fact Feast, I really like your voice, I'm glad we don't have to suffer anything like this, in the modern times, good watch, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Thanks Choppy! Glad you like it.
Wow l used to think l had it so bad ? But my heart ❤ go's out to them people
What a tragic demise for the child who died in the cellar, and was eaten by rats.
Did he die from alcohol poisoning or exhaustion?
What a heartbreaking experience for his family to find him like that... they'd never get the sight of him out of their minds.
Fenital has topped even this
Slubberdegullions 😂😊
Sadly, drinking has always been associated with the poor. The reason for this is the need for escape from one’s own desperate situation for a short time. It’s always been looked down upon of course- but you can scarcely blame people so poor for enjoying a drink when they have literally nothing left in their lives to look forward to than another hard days work the next morning and another pittance of pay with which you can barely survive. This is not a ‘lost’ situation of the past, but is still a reality for millions of people in first world countries alone. And the harder and more thankless the work, the less you get paid for doing it. That’s another thing that still stands true today. For only the desperate will do the worst work- and the desperate get paid the worst of all.
I find today's journalism childish and ignorant compared to the examples you quote.
Modern journalism is chock full of people trying to draw attention to social ills. The obvious question, in both cases, is "how much of this is true? Is the journalist biased?"
Churches aren't any fun .....
That we as human even survived all kinds of shit is unbelievable Thanks for sharing 🤍🦋🤍
