Best video yet. Compelling photography by Jacob August Riis, my favorite social reformer of New York. Worth getting the book and matching up the locales with a modern street map to see how it is now.
In the early '70's I frequented a bar of a likewise intent- maxium profits. The last traces of beer from each keg, was put into a trash can (with a clean liner) and we would dip a 12 oz cup in for 5¢ per dip. All different beers, all stale as hell, but the only bar that would allow underage drinking. When I was 14, I thought all bars did this!
We did this in college. Everyone would pool their leftover alcohol in a trash can with liner, sometimes a few pills would get mixed in. Then everyone shared the rotgut, a Dixie cup or so. It could get nasty. I tried it once and someone must have put in some acid because my boy and I were tripping for hours afterwards. Never Again!
Here we are once again listening to none other than @FactFeast that catches me in exactly the same place that I was last week, in bed listening to my late night Sunday bedtime story!
When I was a little. Girl 45 years ago, there was an old field and it used to be an old victoriana dump, that got filled in , so when the farmer ploughed it, there was ALLWAYS some broken old cly pipes, some have been found nearly whole with just a little bit broken off the long mouth end, also old. Poison bottles and medicine bottles, p,plates, we used to find all sorts. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻
You think that’s bad… There’s a place called Washington DC. Where the heathens and whore masters not only run rampant… But people pay them money from their pockets for the privilege.👍🥃
The same thing is taking hold in society 150 years later, but civilized people are supposed to tolerate it this go around. If society would have tolerated it back then, there wouldn't have been a pause in this sort of behavior, and our country would have been gone long ago.
Drugs and alcohol have been around for many years and will never go away mankind has a love hate relationship with them and always will as long as their is someone willing to pay their will be someone willing to sell it
Interesting that residents of these slums were not fit for military service in WWI due to their diet amongst other indignities that left them literally too stunted and and weak to serve.
@@FactFeast Bro I cant lie your channel is one of the best ones out here. The accounts, your voice, the imagery chosen, it really paints a picture of how bleak like was for some people, and how its actually not too far from happening all over again.
There's another old picture of him drinking while wearing a cupcake costume too. Can't make out the colors because it's in black and white but I hope that it's a pink one too.

Ain’t it interesting the poor are always associated with iniquity. Always due to drunkenness and drugs, just like today. And it’s true. Because an honest man would work for a wage save the handful of honest poor who, if the evil were not included, would be well provided on their way to success
And today - with politically corrected victimology to challenge and change the trajectory of the dialectic presentation (or to 'play the victim card') - certain types of media would denounce such police brutality and middle-class values at work in destroying a popular interracial and gender-equal culture; and we would, of necessity, applaud this mediated sensitivity as modern and enlightened thought. Hmmm?
I found it difficult to watch with that dramatic and judgemental kind of narrative. I'm sorry I know it's just entertainment but I know the other side of this story.... it's not a complete picture at all. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade with a bunch of political correctness that's stupid. I'm feeling compelled to point out these people are my relatives, no not literally. My grandparents were just over from Ireland beaten down and beaten up by the police.... trying to get by in a flea and bedbug infested flop house and look for work....my grandfather came home from WWI a broken man. Yes drank alot , they were never clean, couldn't get a job , he got picked up for vagrancy....fell asleep in alleys. I'm trying to get the point across that they were broken but still good people.

We still call local unkept bars Dives.
All of the dive bars in our area have either burned down or shut down. Weirdly much more of the former than the latter.
True, I've been in a few Dives. They are more fun sometimes. 🍻
There are plenty of dive bars around NY! I’ve been in a few myself.
Wow facinating 🇬🇧

It's funny, how the word "Heathen" which originally meant "people of the Heaths" ( uncultivated land) became negative in connotation.
And this is why prohibition became a thing
Thank you Fact Feast

Well, he's reading a period narrative. "Social reformers" tend to be quite judgemental, even now.
