- Mrs. Mike is a 1949 American drama film that stars Evelyn Keyes & Dick Powell. While visiting her uncle in Alberta, Boston-born Kathy O'Fallon meets Canadian Mountie Mike Flannigan. They fall in love, marry, and go north to Mike's new posting. Together, they face and deal with many hardships, including crude living conditions, illness, and personal tragedy. Can their love survive?
Not a good copy and we will try to get a better one. Free is free and at least we got it up on TH-cam.
Dick Powell was a tremendous talent. He acted, sang, danced, directed and produced.
A legend!
It was a good movie, but there wasn’t a lot that was true to the book. The movie didn’t faithfully portray what Kathy and Mike experienced in the unforgiving wilderness. It would be great if there was a new movie produced that was true to the book. Or perhaps a mini-series for TV. Such a wonderful book. It deserves better!
Books and Hollywood don't work well together.
@@ClassicRobbEvelynKeyes Often very true, but there are exceptions. But in 1949 the public was probably looking for the frothy romance rather than the gritty truth.
@@karenh2737 Totally agree. Evelyn Keyes said her best performance was in Mrs. Mike.
@@ClassicRobbEvelynKeyes Dick Powell was good, too. I always like him! The two of them worked well together.
I thought there was another movie, Mrs. Mike. In my mind, I remember the sledding scene, with her second family? Why can’t producers leave a good book, or story alone? 😢. Sadly, I am wrong. It is only the image in my mind. But I do have a copy of the book. Perhaps it’s time to read it again. Maybe there is an audio version too.
I was unaware that there was a book However click onto one of book shops and managed to order one.Dick Powell was one my favourite actors gone all too soon
Good post!
I was in the process of watching every episode of Bonanza and had just finished watching the episode called The Fugitive. An actor in it looked familiar to me so I checked the cast and found his name was Will Wright. In looking over his filmography I saw he was in a movie I never heard of but I sure heard of the book. The movie was made in 1949, the year I was born. The book, also titled Mrs. Mike, was written by Benedict and Nancy (my name) Freedman. The plot let me know the young Cree girl named Mamanowatum which translates into Oh-Be-Joyful, was left out as was the boy she loved, Jonathan Forquet. I booked this unexpected surprise so I can watch it, never having seen Dick Powell before. Whoever uploaded it, I join the others in thanking you.
Thanks for the nice post!
Will Wright The Blue Dahlia.
I've always enjoyed the book and the movie. This is definitly a movie that needs to be remastered. The quality is fading fast. It is a classic. Thank you for the upload.
Yup, terrible quality copy. But, a great film and even better book.
I heard about the movie when lux radio theater advertised it during a comedy starring dick Powell. So i started listening to the radio version of mrs mike. The sound was so poor that i checked on a movie version and surprise! there was one. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome. Not a good copy though.
Having been warned of the quality of the copy I almost gave this a miss ... so glad I didn't ... very enjoyable, thank you
Horrible copy, great movie!
The book was about a 16 year old girl. Evelyn Keyes was over 30 when this was made. Dick Powell was over 40. Mrs. Mike was a young adult novel. The pathos of the story is largely due to the youth of the main characters. I read it when I was about 13 years old and I was greatly moved to think of a girl just a few years older than me going through the heartbreaking struggles she experienced. I don't think it would have been the same story to me if I had been picturing Evelyn Keyes and Dick Powell.
Good post!
I agree. The movie script writers also left out some of the best, most poignant, or meaningful parts of the book. I'm glad I read the book.
@@jeanettecook1088 Let's find a better print of this movie!
@@jeanettecook1088 I thought the same thing. I didn't see any of the scenes I remember from the book in the movie.
@@jedwardsish It's almost impossible for a movie to live up to the stories created in a book, (and the characters we build in our minds), I find myself disassociating the movie from the book entirely in many cases.
I read this book as a teenager and have been searching for it ever since. Could not remember the authors' names. Thank you more than I can express. The story profoundly affected me, and has again. My mother's oldest brother died at age 2 in Ireland from diptheria before she was born. No antibiotics then, no matter where you lived. Thank you, again!
Is there an updated version of this movie? I feel like I saw it once but it was in color, later than this one.
Great post!
@@maryloughran3114 Nope. Only this film version, with Evelyn Keyes as Katherine Mary and Dick Powell as Mike. Two sequel novels to Mrs. Mike: The Search for Joyful in 2002 and Kathy Little Bird in 2003.
Thank you for posting this movie. I have always loved their story, Kathy & Mike were great people as I remember . I read their story many years ago, but I have never forgotten it. Thank you
You're welcome. Great post!
I have enjoyed this movie so much. I can't thank you enough..
You're welcome!
Greatful that you uploaded this great film.
Not a good copy, but we are happy you saw it!
They need to do a modern version ! Imagine with today's technology
We agree!
It's a nice old fashioned romantic story but I agree, they need to do a modern version (and get the NWMP uniform correct.
Yes, and with all the events in the book that were left out &/or changed in this movie, plus more realistic music.
Even though I knew the story, and I could tell what would happen with the cup, that made me jump. Well done.
A great movie and a horrible copy of it!
Cant wait for a better print!
Exactly!
Wow, I watched this years ago. I think it was a morning movie. I also read the book in Jr. High School. Thanks for finding it and sharing.
You're welcome!
I read the book (in paperback) this movie is based on, at least 3 times in Jr. High & soon thereafter. (It was my introduction to Canadian wilderness life.) I didn't know there was a movie based on it! So glad it (so far, at least) seems to have left out the swearing & cussing found in the book! . . . I'd always felt they should make a movie out of it, & agree with others who already commented here, that a modern version could improve on the original, for obvious reasons.) A few years back I discovered a 1947 hardback copy in a thrift store, bought it, & read it again.
Great post!
Even a poor copy, many thanks to you for posting it. It is not all that bad, truly. a great book it is and a good movie too!
Evelyn Keyes favorite movie of hers.
This is one of my favourite books read it many times😊
I wish we had a better copy of the movie.
Very Very good! Dick Powell sang, that was special. Shocked to see Chief Iron Eyes Cody. And a flash of Dane Clark delivering a message to Mike at his cabin to hurry. Perhaps the film could be saved.
TH-cam copyright prevents a better copy methinks!
@@ClassicRobbEvelynKeyes I mean who ever does saves films for the future
should consider saving this film.
@@deerhoda7574 Yup!
This film needs to be presented to the preservation officer at the UCLA Film and Television archive.
@@thegreencat9947 A great candidate for UCLA!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Thank you so very much for posting. Blessings.
You're very welcome!
That was excellent, I’d never before heard of book or film; Thank-You so much for uploading it!
A real good movie. I wish we had a better copy.
Thank you so much for the upload.
You're welcome. Not a good copy, but free is free.
❤ this movie
I wish we had a better copy!
Evelyn " Goldie " Keyes most famous in a supporting role as an O" Hara sister in GWTW . She was a 1940s Columbia leading lady who six years after this film was supporting Marilyn Monroe in the movie The Seven Year Inch with another 1940s Columbia leading lady Marguarite Chapman .
Yup!
i fell in love with the movie and i just adored the book i think i was 16 when i read it i know that i may have been younger l loved this movie thank you for the posting🙂
Not a great copy, but we are so glad it is available.
A great movie though very sad 😭 thanks for sharing !!

A truly wonderful story.
It sure is. Copyright prevents us from getting a better copy...

This is a 1949 movie. I imagined the copyright for this movie has expired!!
@@zahramokhtar6727 Depends on the popularity of a film.
Read the book in high school. Loved it.
A great book!
This is a favorite book, long before Oprah found the book
I wish we had a better copy of the movie!
How in the world 🌍 did they train their little baby girl 👧 to cry and cry momma???!!!It sounds so natural. What a great little actress. ☺️😊😊🥰🥰🥰
Lots and lots of takes, right?
The real mother was standing behind Keyes, off camera.
@@WildWestGal Probably.
I too, read and enjoyed the book 📕. I agree that this is a bad copy and I can hardly tell what some of it depicts, but I’m going to continue watching it because in spite of the difficulties, I’m enjoying the movie 🎥. 😊
Thanks!
What a wonderful story!
It sure is!
Supposedly they start off around Calgary and later move to areas northwest of Edmonton.
Thanks for the information. Not a good copy of this excellent movie.
Loved❤ It !
Fantastic!
Also the book was told from the point of view of Kathy.
Wish we had a better copy!
GREAT BOOK!
Yes! Bad copy of the film!
Ok, film physical property is not the greatest, but no one can say they watched a bad film. A bit of a tear jerk but it should make you appreciate what you have in these modern times. Definitely a film worth the watch. Sounds like the book was better, so read it.
We need a better copy!!!
I join the others in thanking you.
You're very welcome!
That could have happened in Boston, NY, etc, just as it did in the backwoods.
And did, unfortunately....
Yup.
At least the audio is first rate and has not been messed up by an amateur sound engineer, thanks.
Still wish we had a better copy!
Is there a better quality copy of this? This one is almost unwatchable.
Nope. Will try to find one.

Dick powell is so wrong for this part. Just finished rereading Mrs Mike. Even Powell's personality is wrong

A good day!
The quality makes it unwatchable.
Pretty much... ...upload a better copy.
Great book, awful movie. Someone like Spielberg could put this wonderful story into film and do it justice.
Horrible copy, but the best we can find.
@@ClassicRobbEvelynKeyes not complaining about the copy, its the movie itself. Ms. Keyes is too old for the part, and she is wearing too much makeup (lipstick) to make it look authentic.
@@heyheyhelen931 This was actually her favorite role she ever played.
