What atragedy that a great talent who had contributed so much to music and would have much more had to leave us so early in his life. According to me, he is he greatest sitarist ever born in this world and would have nobparallel. His music is absolutely spiritual Just close your eyes in a dimly lit room litt oom, sit in tje yoga posture and listen to his music . You would feel vibrations and feel as in him you are being transported to the other world. The effect is that of deep meditation.
The manner of portraying a Raga through different stages of Alap,Jor, Jhala, Bilambit Gat, Madhylaya Gat and then Drut Gat and lastly by Jhala ,rendered by Pt Nikhil Banerjee in his sitar playing was really unique and amazing. It had always a long lasting impact on the audience and on this point alone his rendition of sitar playing was entirely successful.
Such a wonderful rendition is scarcely found in Music circles. To hear him makes my inside a miracle happening of joy completely absorbed in such a way thatI feel in meditation.
The most complete sitarist and musician according to me . None other than PtNB can make such a huge long lasting impact ! That intensity, that deep rendition only PtNBji can create it .Blessed are those who are able to connect to his music and witness the miracle of music taking place in themselves!
Absolutely correct observation about the devotional approach ,used to be followed by Pandit Nikhil Banerjee in his rendition which made his play so soothing to heart of the listeners. He was not concerened abouut showing of his technical brilliance in his performance which he was very much capable of ,also not at all concerned about the appreciation of the audience. He used to play his instrument for solely offering his music to Almighty.
The comments form other, more musically educated listeners obscure my limited grasp of ragas. But I'll say this: the pandit has exceeded his own lofty standards in this rendition. The man and his body of work are a treasure to be cherished until the end of time.
Standing on the seashore and touching the waves slowly........ Suddenly one wave connected with my whole body and i just felt this connection with every creature in the world....... This music is peace itself ........
Unhurried renditions and virtuosic technique combining Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan and the leisurely pace of Ustad Amir Khan's vocal with touches of some inventive note combinations found in Western music. The incredible sustain and tonal quality of his Sitar and probably the special relationship he had with instrument maker Hiren Roy of Calcutta made Nikhil the complete musician.
