  • Whats going on everyone, coming at ya with something different today: 1973 Jensen Healey. It's actually a pretty rare car, notably confused with Austin Healeys, TR4's etc. This had a huge influence on my driving style (twisties over straight line speed) ever since I was a kid. I can definitely get more footage and talk more in depth about specific things if anyone's interested, we'll be back to the leggy/shop vids later this week! Thanks for watching!

I have owned 2 1974 Jensen healeys. I have always loved these little cars. my first one was pretty stock other than a paint job and upgraded tires it was stock. the second one I put a racing cam, Koni shocks, sway bar, exhaust system, dellorto 45 carbs, headers, etc. it was a beast. A truly fun car to drive and very reliable.

That sounds like a blast! Should have thrown in a race cam when the motor was apart but ah well, next time haha. Oh, definitely will look into the shocks. they handle great as is, with a stickier tire and after tightening up the steering slop, should be even more fun. Almost the weather to get it out of storage!

I've got a set of Weber 40 DCOE with a pierce manifold for my 73

I owned a '74 JH and a '76 Jensen GT, which was pretty rare. I loved both those cars dearly.
I suspect your brake power booster is out. This happened to my 76, and it definitely made for increased braking pressure after it failed.
The 74-1/2 and later cars came with the Getrag dogleg 5-speed. My 74 was a 74-1/2 but it had a 4-speed, unfortunately. My GT had the 5-speed Getrag, a really nice tranny. The dogleg 1st gear was toward you and down (left hand drive), and it was spring loaded. What this allowed for then was you could shove the shifter straight up, and because of the spring loading, it would snap the selector over just far enough so it would slide straight into second gear. So this made for very fast 1st to 2nd gear shifts.
Just one comment regarding the carburetors -- you mention the Strobergs, the Dellortos and Webers. The Strombergs came stock on the US cars. I've heard different stories on the Dellortos. One I'v heard is the non-US spec cars go Dellortos, the other was that earlier non-US spec cars got them and later non-US spec cars also got the Strombergs. The Jensens =never= had Webers installed from the factory. However, the Dellortos are functionally equivalent, looking like clones of WEBER 45DCOEs.

Thats awesome man! And thank you for all of the information, really appreciate it. We would love to get our hands on the getrag 5spd, would be alot more enjoyable for cruising with 5th! Did you ever have any syncro issues with 4th gear on the 4spd? Ours is a bit tricky, sometimes needing a quick double clutch or a decent pause inbetween 3->4.
I'll have to look into the power booster then! Bit better braking would be nice, not expecting it to stop like my brembos haha.
Well thank you for clearing that up! We were always wondering about that, couldnt find any markings so assumed Stroms, but I've seen pictures of JH with Webers on, hence why we were just curious about it. Thanks for the info again!

A friend of mine had one of these back in the mid 80's. He let me have a drive in it a few times and it was a great fun car to drive. I'm pretty sure it was a five speed though.

I had a white 1974 and a yellow 1975 with a five-speed. Night and day difference in the way the motors ran.
I just spoke with a fellow tonight about buying his red 1974.
Damned, I love to hate my car addiction!

I know this comment is a little late for the posting date of the vid but....
The British style bumpers are nice. Throw some tire gel on the black parts of the bumpers. Works wonders.

I started my apprenticeship in motor vehicle engineering on these in 1975. Cool times

Flat_4_Crew I started at age 16 in a garage in the UK close to 2 USAF bases, Mildenhall and Lakenheath. The Jensen Healey was very popular with Airforce personnel.
Of course initially I wasn’t able to work on them but after 2 years of study and experience in my chosen profession I eventually did some major work on them along with Triumph Spitfires, Austin Healey’s etc. Also lucky to work on Corvette Stingrays and Mustangs, Ferrari’s and of course the Lotus Europa due to the Jensen engine.
I also had the pleasure of working on 2 De Tomaso Panteras which had the mustang engine 😁

Cool vid mate, though this car actually has power brakes. Even on the video you can see a vacum servo ;)

A 2.2 crank from a 910 and different carbs will make them come alive. I hope you upgraded the cam pullys to the later type so that you can use the later type belt.

Unfortunately, everything at the time was put back together as an oem rebuild. Next time it needs motor work itll be getting all the bells and whistles!

I've worked on these, like many other brands. Unfortunately, like almost practically anything coming from UK, these things are a nightmare to own. Thank God I learned the true nature of British vehicles since I was young many decades ago. British "sports cars", to start out with, never had the power to back that statement up. How are they sports cars if a basic saloon of the day is equally fast? Additionally, the British cars tend to break all the time, and when you are lucky, they just leak all over your driveway no matter if they are almost new of few years old. And let's not even get into situations where you drive a Brit through a puddle of water...(complete blackout)...well.
If you ask me (I know you most likely won't) then if you want to have a Brit for it's looks (like the Jag E-Type) then ditch everything you don't see on it's skin with German, Japanese or American technology (yes, everything) and then maybe it will be an enjoyable car. The Brits are good at inventing new stuff but they have no idea how to make things last. If you ask me (well?), what is the worst car in the world, the answer is Rolls Royce, no matter if it is a new or an old one.
