Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Wow, you're as bad as I am. I am a fanatic about cucumbers 🥒 and tomatoes 🍅... Preferably sliced on a plate. Both of them lol. So I Winter Sow, and this year in my jugs I planted
    Homestead (repeat)
    Roma VF
Pork Chop (yellow with orange stripes)
Hartman's Yellow Gooseberry (yellow cherry and DELICIOUS) (repeat)
    Beefsteak
    Pineapple (orange tomato)(repeat)
Then today I finally emptied it enough seeds trays and planted
Dad's Sunset (red and orange) (repeat)
    Super Sweet 100 (Red Cherry)
    Black Cherry (Cherry)(repeat)
Black Krim (Russian black tomato with green shoulders)
    Burgundy Pink Fruited (pink)
    Amish Paste (repeat)
    San Marzano
Brad's Atomic Grape (purple and yellow)
And more I can't even remember right now lol. The ones that say repeat, I grew last year. The rest are new. I absolutely adore the light, citrusy taste of the yellow and orange tomatoes. Now last year the only trouble I had with my tomatoes, and my Amish paste suffered as well I should mention, is I had blossom end rot because of the drought. I don't have a well and I can't catch what won't fall, so watering was a labor of love. I also went and got some tomato and veg granulated fertilizer and that mostly put an end to that. But with the dad's sunset, man those are amazing tomatoes. They are so so so so so so delicious. But it took so long to finally get some. They sat there on the vine and they would be huge and I would be waiting for them to start to turn and then when I thought okay this is it it's turning I can grab it and put it on the counter!!, I would go to pull it off and find a rot spot under it so... That was pretty miserable. But again, blossom end rot was my main issue and then not getting the Dad's Sunset to ripen! They would sit there day after day after day, and just not turn.

I used to grow the Black Beauty zucchini and yellow crookneck squash but several years ago I bought the Golden Zucchini squash from an organic farmer, friend of my husband who sells at our local farmers market. Squash bugs had taken out my squash, those Golden Zucchini were the best I ever ate. They. take the place of both yellow and green squash so now I only grow the Golden zucchini. Grilled planks are awesome and we also are on the Ketovore lifestyle so they fit into our eating habits, they are great cut up with onions and cooked until tender with butter, and at the end add heavy cream to finish it. It is like a dessert it is so good!

It makes me wish I had the room for one. I have a few more plants I want to start. Still another month before the last frost here. I'm in Ohio and our weather is supposed to get cold this coming week. Like down into the thirties. We've had about the same weather as you guys have had but I hope your greenhouse stays warm. For about the next 5 or 6 days it's supposed to get down into the 30s at night. 😬 I have a small greenhouse outside that I use in April to put all of my stuff outside from in the house. I start everything in February or March and put it outside in April to harden off and grow but I also have a small heater out there to keep everything close to 50° or higher. I love the seeds from MIgardener and purchased a little over $300 in seeds last year! Everything I grew performed better than I could have ever imagined and I also put stuff together a lot closer than in years prior. I sort of used a square foot gardening method in my rows for the garden. Thank you for all the teaching moments! I have learned a good bit from you guys.

I get squash bugs up here in Maine every 7 years and they aren't as bad as you get in the south. The last time I had them, and once the squash vines were pulled, I put black plastic over the bed and left it until June when the soil warmed up. So far I haven't seen any and that was years ago. I also did that on the potato bed and it killed the potato beetles also. We don't have the option of growing a second crop.

If you get to where you want a BLT sandwich try Natures Own Keto Life bread. I am elderly and am keeping my A1C in the 5's with no meds and every day I have an egg, cheese, and a deli meat slice on two slices of this bread and my glucose meter shows below 120. I find the bread in a subsidiary of Kroger (City Market) here in a very small town in Colorado. Google says its in Safeway and Walmart also. Happy farming to y'all.

I just harvested last year’s enormous oregano crop (from one very healthy plant) and made an oregano-parsley pesto. I’ve been thinning it with a northern Italian salad dressing, and I can’t get enough of those salads!

I'm a little over 30 miles from y'all the way the crow flies and it got 93 degrees here breaking the all time record high that was set back in like 1981.

Glad to see you're trying the Gold Nugget and Rose de Berne tomatoes! I've started some of them for the first time, too!

I saw a video that you can put foil around the base of the squash plant to prevent the squash bug from invading your plants. I plan on trying it this year

A job well done! Won't be long till you are eating fresh. Always seems like so few buckets for the greenhouse, but it works well for you and that's what matters. We do not have squash bugs up here about 6 hours north of the border. Was wondering what happened to your citrus from a year or so ago. Good video!!

One of my not so guilty pleasures is any fresh bell pepper with cream cheese and corned beef. Delicious!

I have planted both Contender and Jade green beans, and will definitely plant both again. My homestead is a suburban backyard so I have to maximize production in a small area. Jade beans have fewer “days to harvest” than Contender, so I grow them in succession after the Contender. I get a great second crop here in north Alabama before first frost.
I also think you’ll enjoy those Earliglo strawberries you planted in the previous video. I have them doing very well in two GreenStalk vertical planters, plus everbearing Tribute strawberries in two GreenStalks for season long garden munching. Lots of good eating!

I'm growing in containers, raised beds and a small in ground space. I put my indeterminate tomatoes where they will only get a few hours of sun each day as it gets so hot and humid here they get hit hard and die. I depend on the hybrids for canning tomatoes because they handle the heat and humidity better and put on the majority of their fruits within a couple weeks are all ripe and done.

Jersey Devil is very delicious, but it is not a paste tomato. It looks like one. You could use it if you really needed, but they have a decent amount of water in them. I grew them they weren’t always so productive and seemed to have disease problems. My experience is they always looked terrible to start, but caught up in the end. I haven’t grown them in a while.
