F1 HUNGARIAN GP QUALIFYING analysis by Peter Windsor

  • Mercedes' Sir Lewis Hamilton is on the pole for the Hungarian GP! He out-qualified Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the closing milliseconds of Q3 after heading the times in FP3 on Saturday morning. Red Bull have accumulated much more race data than Mercedes, and should therefore be in great shape on Sunday - but in Hungary, as on other slow circuits, it is not easy to overtake. The pole, in other words, counts for much. McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, start third and fourth, continuing the competitive pace we saw at Silverstone - and Alfa Romeo, starting a superb P5/P7, upstaged both Ferrari and Aston Martin. Peter Windsor looks back at the day's ground-breaking events.

Your assessment of the job Lewis has done is spot on- at least since the summer break of 2022. He came out of that summer break like a man rejuvenated and re-focused and has been driving at a very high level ever since.
In the first half of the 2022 season, he seemed quite destroyed by Abu Dhabi, and was very distracted and not driving like himself. But since the summer break, the old, Lewis has been back behind the wheel, and the only limitation has been that of the car that the team has provided to him.

I can see the savings (£) this will offer and as a format it is of itself not a problem, I feel the result tosay is less of the format and more to do with the character of this track, it is a curcuit which always favours driver skill more so than most others. The only concernes I have for this qualifying format is that after a couple of races, all the teams will have been able to amass enough information on their opponents performance on each option that strategies will become so predictable that they no longer hold any margins for error in choice, it could get very boring very quickly! Anyhow, we have the potential for a good race out of the box! Max, Lewis and Lando will hopefully give us some entrtainment in at least the opening laps and then we have Cheko and George all set to fight their way through the field. Plenty of other potential out there too, i'm expecting quite some unforced errors......can't wait!

Lando has stated publicly that he doesn't want to drive the McLaren the way he is currently, brake-turn-accelerate. He would rather do the preferred blended approach that maximizes the friction circle. So I think it is a little unfair to bang on him for his driving style. I would say the jury is still out on Norris until the car is developed further. If anything it shows his ability to adapt his style to the car.

    • @bjs7442

The jury may be out on the car but definitely not Lando . He is one of the top three drivers on the grid now. A number of people including Marko have said that he is right up their as the strongest of the young drivers and the only driver with the talent other than Lewis to take on Max. The stunning drive at Silverstone on the back of Austria and seven podiums shows he can battle with the best. I agree that Peters fixation with short corners which may be correct in an ideal world does not factor in what the car likes. Lando is maximizing the cars strengths. Add into that his amazing consistency and very few errors makes him a special driver.

@@joshn1678 Oscar has impressed greatly. Lando has shown that he is now one of the top three drivers with Max and Lewis. I think we have always known it but the last three races have confirmed it. A number of commentators have recently said so. However that shows how good Oscar is . He is always behind by .2 to .3 but very consistent and part of the best driver lineup in F1. I am sure he will beat Lando on occasion but thats the nature of F1 but I am confident that over a season Lando is the faster driver.

Ricciardo was a bit lucky that Mercedes screwed up with Russell. That's part of the sport, but let's not draw too much conclusions just yet; Yuki got through Q1 five times this year. Horner predicted Mercedes would be the biggest competition after FP1, based on corrections for track conditions, tyres and fuel loads. So yeah, their car is fitting for this track. And well done Hamilton.

I really like the enforcement of tire use in Qualifying! It’s like you are earning the right for a softer compound by getting into Q2 and Q3. They should equalize to 12 sets for the full race weekend, just to get more track time. And I think they could eliminate Q3. Combine Practice 1 and 2 into a single two hour session that matches the qualifying start time to have the best track and ambient condition reference. That would make for a great simplified weekend with lots of track action too!
