As someone who has worked in construction building hotels and condominiums in the past, l am hoping you can get the roof on and the windows covered before winter. I have worked on buildings with no windows in the winter, (one was on the oceanfront) and it is no fun to work in subfreezing temperatures with wind and rain and snow blowing in. We would have frozen puddles on the floors and had to chip away the ice in the mornings. You could put temporary wooden frames in the window openings and fasten sheets of heavy clear plastic fastened to them to keep the elements out. It is amazing to watch your progress everyday.
Wow, what harsh working conditions. I'll bet you have so many stories. People often don't think about the long painful labor intensive work that goes into building these massive structures. It's a thankless job, I'm sure. I hope you still have the time and energy to go and enjoy your life a bit with friends and family. I'm hoping Dan gets the chateau water proof before winter as well. Spending time with his boys inside the chateau will be much easier even if it's cold outside.
Yes I think the plan is to make that section watertight before winter so he can carry on with work inside, there is a lot of work to do with the brickwork at roof level so it will be tricky!?!
@@hopegrable Yes many stories. One of the best was when we worked on the oeanfront and l glanced out a window one day and saw a whale about a hundred yards from the beach. You’re doing a fabulous job, Dan. Only this evening… I found myself screaming at my iPad trying to get you to hear me! You have the right idea by using the router to cut the top edges of each of the boards. You were having a hard time because you didn’t have a straight-edge fence for the base of the router to ride against. Use your track-saw “track” as a straight-edge and you’ll get a perfect cut. You’ll be able to start your cuts right at the edge of each board until the base of the router comes into contact with the fence; which you can either clamp or temporary nail into the end boards to hold it steady. Just be sure to use a double-flute straight bit in the router and you’ll be done in minutes. You can likewise save a boat-load of time rounding over the edges of the boards using a belt-sander. Chiseling is hard work. A belt-sander with an aggressive grit can remove a lot of material in a very short amount of time saving you a lot of bodily aches. Regardless, your project is one of the greatest… if not THE greatest thing on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing your project with us.
Hey Dan. Tip from an old carpenter..... Once you have your beams aligned and make the first cut, make several additional cuts of the same depth, out to the ends of the beams. Your chisel work will be alot easier. I applaud your self motivation. And your willingness to learn from your mistakes. It seems to be in short supply these days.

A great example of of working smart not harder. I’m amazed that you stay so cheerful even after a tedious repetitive task. We must celebrate our little victories and even I can appreciate from this distance how good you feel after each new floor. Once you get the yurt in and you begin to live in a more civilised manner, you will feel even more productive. I haven’t heard you say but how are you managing to shower or bathe? THats the one thing at the end of a long hard day to make a person feel fantastic- reviewing your progress at the end of the day with a refreshed clean body. Simple pleasures.
Wow Dan - long day of work. I hope you’re sleeping well at night and giving your body time to recover. More beams and floor boards in the offing. You are kicking butt!
I would suggest making a mobile miter saw station. When the work pieces are so large, its more efficient bringing the tool to the work rather then the work to the tool.
Awesome, Dan! One thing you could do is run the pass of the saw several times from where the measurement should be to the end of the board and then chisel. It makes the chiseling part a lot easier and quicker! Love your videos!
I was thinking the same thing but realized the wood is so soft it might take more time to do several passes. My thought was to do the first depth cut and then reposition at the edge of the board making a parallel cut, removing only the thickness of the blade, to use as a starting point for chiseling. Would be better at keeping the thickness consistent over eyeballing it as he does now.
One of my marching band directors in college liked to say, "Repetition is funny. Repetition is funny." There is an aspect to this type of project that involves a lot of problem solving. And I think, like you, that may be the more appealing part in my experience. I'm more motivated when I have to figure something out. However, once any problem is solved, or process developed, I lose some of that motivational edge. That's when I think you have to remember the overall vision of the project and be willing to "Keep On Keepin' On," and not let yourself be overly satisfied with just solving each problem as it arises. Maybe the best approach is to be grateful that you can actually relax a little while doing the repetitive work. As I like to say, "Mindless work frees your mind." 😉 Thanks again for the inspiration. I have two more rounds of my own repetitive work to complete my "vision" of my catio. 👍😊👍
I am so proud of you as you work through improving your operation. You are an inspiration! Great job and this channel is must see! Gotta love your facial expressions as you make progress! Kudos to you!

Dan you should hire someone to help you out after all the work you do by yourself I can’t even imagine how you must wake up so sore the next day even though the process is slow you are doing a great job.
Tah Dah...arms up in victory, now there was a sight...i think living on site gives you more time to think things out and it certainly is more entertaining for us and we're all rooting for ya man...and what a sight panning up that incredible wall with the dark abyss looming outside her gaping, ravaged windows...cool stuff...!
A quick tip to really speed up the profiling: measure the distance from the edge of the router baseplate to the edge of your bit, and then clamp a board on that distance from the edge of where you want the profile to be. Rather than worrying about a line and not going too far, you can just machine out every bit of wood that you can touch and you'll end up with a perfect profile at the end.
You could also clamp the Festool saw track instead of a board.... The side of the track should be perfectly straight to then run the side of the router down.
Dan, you reminded me of Peter Pan looking for his shadow, when you put your arms on your hips. I like the night videos and the shadows cast. You’re my favorite vlogger and your project is fascinating.
When you walked along the floor to the window Dan, it made me so emotional. You deserve to be happy with everything you have accomplished and what is incredible is not only your eye for detail for carpentry but camera angles and cinematic skills. BRAVO ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅
YES DAN!!!... We have a BREAK THROUGH!!! Move your supplies closer to your P.O.B. so you're not wasting time & energy manhandling them distances. GOOD JOB! ❤️🙏
Seeing all those bits and pieces of nice Wood , You could make some really nice blocks for your boys at some point. Smooth the edges and you’ve got an excellent gift And keepsake from your château. They would have them for their children, telling stories about you fixing up that château.!❤

He showed us how he did shower. Had some kind of bag that had water that he used.
Two or three of those bags would make a more luxurious shower!
I suspect he has a proper hot shower at the farmhouse when he collects or drops off the boys. He probably washes his clothes there too.
@@totallydomestic433 Camp shower.
It is impressive to watch your skills and ingenuity grow along with this restoration.
Amen to that
And confidence.
Wow Dan - long day of work. I hope you’re sleeping well at night and giving your body time to recover. More beams and floor boards in the offing. You are kicking butt!
You are so inventive! I love it! I was clapping! 👏👏👏💪🤩 Brilliant!
Wow! You figured out a way to speed up your process with the beams 💪👏👏👏👏 what is amazing is how pitch black it is outside the windows 😱
There are no street lights in the country side.
Cracking on mate. Great job.
Oh Dan, this is awesome! Just don’t wear yourself out.
I would suggest making a mobile miter saw station. When the work pieces are so large, its more efficient bringing the tool to the work rather then the work to the tool.
You worked so hard into the night, great idea to carve all the edges at the same time. Another floor down.
Dan's the man - working smarter, not harder.
Everything is looking amazing❤
So happy to see how far you've come along. The amount of time alone you put into making the videos, is appreciated.
Those lights add a whole new character to the chateau.
Wow that was a great idea Dan and your smile said it all well done ❤
I'm over here cheering you on with each new discovery and creative path you are taking! Well done!!🎉🎉🎉🎉

Dan our man you are amazing, doing this mostly on your own. It's coming on great, but like we all say please be safe we love you👍, watching this at 3 45 in the morning, went to the lady's 😊oh! Haven,t see Dan yet😂. Love from Wales UK ❤❤
Love your ingenuity, Dan.
He still needs to get some sleep though. 😮
I live on the other side of the world and can't believe I'm.addicted to this show.
It's awesome
A quick tip to really speed up the profiling: measure the distance from the edge of the router baseplate to the edge of your bit, and then clamp a board on that distance from the edge of where you want the profile to be. Rather than worrying about a line and not going too far, you can just machine out every bit of wood that you can touch and you'll end up with a perfect profile at the end.
This.
You could also clamp the Festool saw track instead of a board.... The side of the track should be perfectly straight to then run the side of the router down.
ROCKIN' & ROLLIN"!!! Progress is addictive! Well done! 😎
Can't wait to see you flip them to do the other side.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍
Dan your smile says it all your glowing everytime another section is complete great job guy we are all pleased for you !! 👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🥰🇨🇦
Amazing Dan. I was almost doing a jig when I saw the beams going in. Looking forward to tomorrow's update.
YES DAN!!!... We have a BREAK THROUGH!!! Move your supplies closer to your P.O.B. so you're not wasting time & energy manhandling them distances.
GOOD JOB! ❤️🙏
It’s so exciting to see how you bring her back to live step by step. She is happily smiling at you.Thank you for sharing the experience with us.❤
I think the main reason I like watching this is its just peaceful and has only one goal lol
Its fun to start seeing and getting a feel for the spaces now with Dan walking from one room into another.
Seeing all those bits and pieces of nice Wood , You could make some really nice blocks for your boys at some point. Smooth the edges and you’ve got an excellent gift And keepsake from your château. They would have them for their children, telling stories about you fixing up that château.!❤
