I love how the first season of Adventure Time is basically just "haha silly cartoon makes no sense", but as the show goes on you realize how deep it actually is. Then you see Fionna and Cake and think "damn, these characters are traumatized."
It's so funny to see how it and Regular Show came out around the same time and Adventure Time became this deep existential show about identity and purpose. Meanwhile Regular Show became this weird slice of life show that deals with growing up, moving on, and learning how not to become a boring adult.
It has an extra layer of sadness knowing that it's Gunters interpretation of how evergreen saw him. So him saying I love you gunter is how he saw him, even through all the abuse..
@@furcat4415and it gets even worse in that gunter was unable to use the crown to save everything so he simultaneously proved evergreen right and let evergreen down.
@@leonwinchester9865 but that was Evergreen's fault. he never actually took his job as a teacher seriously and treated Gunter like crap and that's why things went sideways
@@magicman25103 that's what makes the tragedy hit even harder. The self fulfilling prophecy of the situation. Evergreen refused to train Gunter because Gunter wasn't immediately good at magic and Gunter couldn't get over his admiration of evergreen for the world because evergreen was still too far a leap in talent for him to see anything but how great evergreen was.
Something about the music cutting right when he says, “Wouldn’t it be nice,” in almost a full scream of rage makes me cry every time. It’s like he’s been at his mental limit forever and just wants everything to be over.
When he takes off the crown his skin color doesn’t revert like it does earlier in the episode, despite the fact he seems to regain his sanity like earlier. And then we hear him say Gunter and it really shows how much the crown damages him. So glad he was saved eventually. Man deserves nothing but the best.
Poor Simon, he’s spent thousands of years alone, never getting a break from the constant fighting ontop of loosing his mind. The more I watch this the more sad and heart broken I feel, kinda reminds me of how I feel
thats what happens when you make a show with such likeable characters, and world building, and great messages at its core, appeals to all ages while staying timeless
I wish they did a spin off called Marcy and Simon origins and it just had 2 seasons or less of this, Marcy slowly aging and Simon slowly going mad from the crowns curse
Can relate, watched together again *ONCE* and had to watch obsidian multiple times so it would fill with wholesomeness the massive black hole it left that destroyed me emotionally, physically and mentally.
The shot at 0:40 of Simon looking like the modern incarnation of Ice King really digs into the realization that this caring man just trying to look out for a young girl and find his lost love devolves into a sad insane side villian that kidnaps princesses not even realizing whats going on
Had no idea this was the cheers theme, but whenever I hear the song? It’s this sequence and I want to implode into nothing Why’s it got to be so catchy
its so when the song ends its a reminder to take the crown off, its sort of like repeating something to yourself over and over so you dont forget to do it
imagine telling yourself as like an 8 year old watching season 1 of adventure time that the ice king would have a complex insane sad backstory of becoming insane to save Marceline and survive the apocalypse.
Simon got worst to his skin is more blue and he’s losing more of himself and not to mention when he sang cheers his sanity got lost even more so that means whatever he remembers when he puts on the crown that happens
“I love you Gunther” always kills me man
it's really sad and really funny at the same time
It reminds me way too much of dementia and it hurts

Simon being the most traumatized character of them all
The episodic to serial cartoon transition is always fun in my opinion
"I love you, Gunter" would have been super helpful eons ago if Evergreen said it

When you realize he started singing as an attempt to maintain his sanity but failed
i thought that was obvious
@@sudge1809 it was lol
Not entirely. The fact he pushed the crown off himself isn't to be understated.
@@littlemoth4956It was a signal. You can see him realize that the song is ending, which means take off the crown.
@@ughwhy-f9vwait that’s so smart, I doubt that’s intentional but it’s my head cannon now
The creator of this show is evil for not making a full version of the song by Simon.
Its from a song called cheers
for reallll
There's now an AI version sung by Simon not ice King
@@ninjasparten1342Their referring to there not being a full version of ice king singing it
For real there not being a full Ice king version is almost criminal

Simon is my favorite character from AT forever and ever.
Same
I do think his lore is amazing
@@stijnheinsius and the most crucial to the story
He's one of my favorite characters for sure
Him and Marcy were the main reason why I watched the entire show 😄

@@unitornsreal Let the man speak his mind stinky!!!!!
It was only a thousand years, but I get your point.
Happy 10 years to this incredible episode.

@@stikbr5833 After Gunter gunted my fries I have no more tears left to cry 😔but fr tho I would love to see this
@@codpastcorner1055 so I rapped this.
There is a comic book series named simon and marcy it is very good actually
@@Rubexcience oh really!! Cool thanks for letting me know.
this show is incredible, makes me laugh and cry. distant lands together again absolutely mentally destroyed me though
how are you doing after Fiona and Cake? I've never felt so bittersweet about a show before.
Can relate, watched together again *ONCE* and had to watch obsidian multiple times so it would fill with wholesomeness the massive black hole it left that destroyed me emotionally, physically and mentally.
0:02 i love how marceline is showing off her bicep to prove she can fight
we all did that when we were kids
Lol that little moment lives rent free in my head and randomly gives me strength for arduous tasks
It's so hard to believe that he has the same voice actor as SpongeBob SquarePants
It's always one of my favorite scene in the whole series.
Adventure time has a lot of fantastic moments but this take the cake for me for my all time favorite.
Agreed
Just saw this today and I am SOBBING
Chills, literally chills
I didn’t notice until now but the piece of gum on the can went into his shirt pocket
Thats not gum its a scientific parasite. All smart characters in the show have them
The shot at 0:40 of Simon looking like the modern incarnation of Ice King really digs into the realization that this caring man just trying to look out for a young girl and find his lost love devolves into a sad insane side villian that kidnaps princesses not even realizing whats going on

Why’s it got to be so catchy
I can tell it's gonna be stuck in my head for years to come and I've never even heard of cheers
You should watch it. It's classic my grandpa and mom watched it with me. Just be prepared different times and all
It's so sad when we see Simon here because we only knew the stoopid ice king
this is the greatest sadness
We were finn and jake here
I understand that this is very sad but I find his tone of voice and the way he's yelling the song at the top of his lungs hilarious 🤣🤣
its so when the song ends its a reminder to take the crown off, its sort of like repeating something to yourself over and over so you dont forget to do it
One of my favourite scenes of the episode and the series, it’s really Nostalgic to me and will always be one of my favourite shows
That few seconds when he was fully ice king are sad
I heard this song today and immediately searched for it.
one of the most tragic villains in animation
The fact that they were able to rewrite the most goofy villain to have the most tragic backstory is amazing
Imagine that gum was princess bubblegum
It was PB’s mom pretty much so your close lol
Damn the mother gum came in clutch
This shift in emotions from sadness to happiness is wonderful❤
I'm not crying your crying
0:40 in that frame Simon looks more like ice king than before
1:12 also Gunter
imagine telling yourself as like an 8 year old watching season 1 of adventure time that the ice king would have a complex insane sad backstory of becoming insane to save Marceline and survive the apocalypse.
Takin a break from all your worries sure would help alot
i like how the gum is like the fungus in Super Mario Bros. (1993)
hey, remember when the Ice King was a silly character and not a soul crushing allegory for dementia?
Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows you’re name and there always glad you came
Istg watching this is always my form of self harm. Literally bawling my eyes out rn💔
Ignoring how sad this is, Ice king could kick ass
One spoonful of chicken soup to help Marcy :(
Someone needs to sample this
I come here to cry sometimes
One question:
Did the mother gum give Simon the soup??? And if so, why??
Princess bubblegum?
1:01 even the scientific parasite in his pocket is sad after that.
Now I notice that his voice changes to, also with the skin
Simon got worst to his skin is more blue and he’s losing more of himself and not to mention when he sang cheers his sanity got lost even more so that means whatever he remembers when he puts on the crown that happens
who knew spongebob can sing and is blue
I'm not crying you're crying
Who's crying? You are the one who cry I'm not T-T
The Crown's magic may make him insane. But he could defeat the lich to save the ones he loves.
He definitely does not beat the lich. Lich wins mid to high diff. It wold be a lot closer then people think but no.
I remember this and thinking it was so random. I still do but it hits so perfectly
I just realized that gum that gives the chicken noodle soup becomes netty or bonnibel
What are you doing SpongeBob
Simon

Wow i guess youtube class this as adult enough not to be for kids lol.
He could have just flown away with Marcy, isn't he?
You kinda missed whole "after putting crown on after few seconds turns into insane madman" part
Is this Ben 10?
