- The Star Wars trilogy introduced so many iconic characters into our imaginations. Darth Vader, Yoda, Luke Skywalker. But the most mysterious character was the bounty hunter Boba Fett. In a little more than 2 minutes, he captured the imaginations of fans for decades. Long before his clone origins were revealed in the prequel trilogy, we built this Mandalorian villain up in our minds. So what makes him so awesome?

This actually explains how General Grievous got so popular as well. Both characters had an animated start, showing off their cool powers. The fans got hyped up due to a mix of crazy intimidating villain design and marketing. Both characters were branded as Jedi-killers, which immediately shows that they will be a challenge for the heroes to overcome. Finally, they have very little screen time in their introductory movies and mediocre send-offs, making the fans want more. This is why both of them became so popular.
Wrestling has used this formula for a long time. The only difference is that the character tends to write itself when they are good. And so long as those boxes mentioned are ticked and the guy carries it...it tends to be successful to fuck.
Again the talent has to take it to the next level. You become either Y2J or the Shockmaster because of it.

I was a kid in theaters during the original trilogy. When I was 9 I saw Empire and it’s forever impacted how I watched movies. I received a Boba Fett action figure in the mail since he was a new “mystery figure”. He came in a plain white box. Fett is awesome. You’re right. He was the only character who spoke to Vader without walking on glass.
I was also 9 when Empire came out. Did you receive the Boba Fett figure with the actual rocket that could be fired? If I remember correctly, mine did not actually fire.

I was too young for Star Wars but I was 5-6 when I saw Empire and a little older when Jedi came out. I don't remember the first time I seen Star Wars tho but it had to have been AFTER Empire and was before home video was wide spread. I do know that It was re-released in Theaters and Drive ins even after Empire. I got hooked on Star Wars before Jedi came out so both of them(SW & Empire) must have had either a re-release rotation or they were just always being played somewhere. Regardless, before Jedi came out, I was already collecting massive amounts of toys.
I remember getting Force Ghost Anakin in the mail, Zuckuss with the 5 figures proof of purchase (But the picture had the name 4-Lom on the ad IIRC and I always thought that was his name for the longest time) The Emperor and a few others. I actually didn't do any of it, my mom did TBH. I also had this generic version of the weird grey "Ground Troop" transport where you put the figures on the side but mine did not come with electronic setup where it had buttons and made noises.
Very being unafraid to mouth off to Vader was impressive when I saw this in 1980
Technically the Emperor and Luke also spoke to Vader with confidence, and so did Leia. But that's kinda different.
The fact that Boba Fett could speak to Vader in a somewhat snide sort of way and not be thrown out the nearest airlock is a true testament to the respect that Vader had for Fett but it also indicates that Fett has done numerous "jobs" for Vader in the past. We can gather by Vaders anti disintegration tone that a majority of Fetts bounties could only be identified by DNA analysis.

Jetpacks were a newer and bigger thing back then, so as a kid playing with the toys, the one with the jetpack and missiles was a lot of fun.

Head canon: Fett was terrible in RoTJ because he was hung over. He brought Jabba a bounty and hung around to celebrate. He partied too hard though, hence being taken out so easily.

As a 7 year old I was not interested in Clint Eastwood or westerns for adults. 2 min of screen time and an action figure = endless imaginative possibilities
I sent in 5 proofs of purchase to get a pre-empire Boba Fett action figure. I kept it in the original packaging because I knew how special it was. My mom threw it out because I obviously wasn't playing with it. No, I've never let her forget that.

My mom donated all of my Thundercats & He-Man toys and accessories (about $500 in todays economy), because some kids house burned down and they had no toys. (without consulting me). What hurt me the most was the crystal Mum-Ra that I had to clip and send proof-of-purchase and $2.99 shipping & handling and waited 6 weeks to get.
I think Jango Fett is massively underrated. He was basically the Boba Fett of the Prequel generation. The LEGO sets with Jango were few and rare, making him a prized possession.
It was an ideal character. The Captain America character had to make sure he remained a prototype to remain unique aka the lost formula. Jango being the template for a clone army while one of them was to retain his full well and raised as a son creates this uniqueness in a very Star Wars way.
Star Wars Bounty Hunter was a great game as well still my favorite SW game.

Bit surprised no mention of his run in the clone war tv show. Showing his growth as a bounty Hunter, his code of honor, and his hatred towards Mace Windu.
It was the toy that made Boba Fett popular. He was the first new action figure to be released for ESB, and all you had to do was send in 4 proofs of purchase. So we all had the toy and were making up stories about him long before we ever saw him on screen. If anything, we were upset that he didn't get more to do in the movie.
Yep, was just about to say the same thing. In a world with no internet, this was a way of building hype for the new movie. We were all talking about Boba Fett because we all had the action figure.

I came here to say this. Anticipation for his character was high because many of us had the action figure well before the movie was released. If I remember right, the action figure was advertised with a firing rocket backpack, but mine came with the rocket glued in.
@@sammiemo yeah. As a kid, I had one of the card backs that showed the firing rocket, and one that had a sticker over the picture when they cancelled it. Some say it was for safety reasons (and mention a Battlestar Galactica toy that caused issues) and others say they just never got it to work well enough - take your pick of urban legend.
As much as I've liked what Temura Morrison has done with the character, Jason Wingreen's vocalization really gave Boba a film noir-ish, seedy characterization that fit with the bounty hunting background. The consequences of Lucas's changes have seen contributions from actors (like Wingreen and Sebastian Shaw) and special effects technicians being forgotten.
I totally agree 👍 Morrison's portrayal off Boba Fett lacks that western gunslinger panache made famous by past actor's but I do enjoy his interpretation of him.
Maybe it's because I am from Texas and I've heard too much of the Hollywood "Western Cowboy" voice, but I find Wingreen's vocalizations come off as whiny and make the character feel a bit more wimpy. Temuera's voice sounds more masculine to me, but again just my interpretation. I do think that Wingreen was a very talented dude though.
Yeah and as awesome and irreplaceable as Wingreen's take is, it makes him sound like a fucking cartoon character, Boba Fett as a fully fledged character was never within Wingreen's abilities. Morrison does it best, but it rests on the writing.
The perfect example of why less is more.
Finally someone tied Sergio Leone/ “The Man With No Name (also “Blondie”) when describing Boba Fett and the new show. I’m also pretty sure that if you watch “Fist Full of Dollars” you’ll get the plot for the new show. It involves two warring Criminal factions and when the man with no name shows up he fits them against each other and takes over as the crime lord of the town.
Boba Fett, Snakes Eyes (Gijoe), Usagi Yojimbo (TMNT), & Omega Supreme (G1 Transformers) Badasses that should gotten more screen time but left an indelible impact on thier respective fandoms.

George Lucas was a strange talent. He created created a new world drawing from several genres , but seemed to have trouble understanding the kind of stories that would work within it. Boba Fett is the most native charter there is in the space Spaghetti Western .

I have often said that it takes certain kinds of people to make great things, but it takes another to have the taste to sort through them. Which bottle of wine would one select? If someone makes good wine 90% of the time but has poor taste , 10% of the time you will get bad wine. if another makes good wine 50% of the time but has good taste and pours the bad down the drain, they will never give you bad wine, even if they have less talent in making it.
The prequels are a good example of the problem. There are many good things about them , but they are mixed in with very bad material. I think people appreciate them more now because people can watch good scenes on you tube and forget about jar jar etc. its remarkable that in the new trilogy there is nothing I want to see.

As kids in the early 80s we could cobble together Boba-like costumes easily, too, due to the weathered non-perfect look. None of us bought him dying in the Sarlacc pit - that scene was lame. While he was a non-good guy, he wasn't evil since he wasn't a stooge for Vader and didn't kill Han. I love that you brought up how much we made up our own stories. No cable TV, no internet, we had to entertain ourselves. We had tennis ball cannons on our Boba suits, we'd make the little kids be jawas or trashcan droids, dorks were tuskens, and "hey, Mikey, can your sister be Leia again?" (and you know we wanted bikini Leia!).
I was 1st introduced to boba fett in Star Wars battlefront the video game for ps4. There was this dude with cool emotes “your no use to me dead” & “I’ll get it done” with a jet pack & a burst blaster & a flame thrower attached to his wrist. The jet pack let you sore really high & pluck out the competition. That’s how I discovered boba fett & tbh that game is what sparked my interest in Star Wars at all. So since then I watched all the Rey films, rogue one, solo, & of course mandolorian & the book of boba fett! Hands down boba is my all time favorite, the show was 8.5/10 for me but the character I was introduced too will forever hold a special place!

The popularity of Boba caught alot of people of guard including George . Expensive and rare collectables including action figures and other related content and not to mention social media that spread the love of this character like wild fire to the point the studios sat up and took notice . When you watch the first episode of the Book of Boba Fett know if you are a fan its your dedication that made this series possible ..
As a young child watching Empire Strikes Back and later on Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett’s overall appearance, voice,attitude, and the fact that he’s a freaking Bounty Hunter is what drew me into the character. I’d be lying if I said that his awesome looking outfit with its battle worn scars and damage and that Boba Fett has a Jetpack with a huge missile on the top didn’t help in me liking the character even more. I also love His iconic looking helmet combined with his cape, all of those things add to his Bad Ass factor. ( I also grew up on a steady dose of comics and superheroes so the cape was a nice touch.) I think for all us, the fact that we had to wait so long to see Boba Fett return to live action also helped in making him even more popular. I’m not a fan of the Star Wars Special Editions but I will say that I really do like all of the added footage with Boba Fett. The Mandalorian turned out to be one of the greatest parts of the Star Wars Mythos and I’m sure the Book of Boba Fett is going to be equally as great! I can’t wait! Ryan did an Awesome job as usual!

As an 8 year old in 82, I can say the action figure is why I fell in love with boba fett.
Getting him before the movie, made him the one character where I could make up my own story for him, only knowing he was a bounty hunter. And Lucas never told his story so he remained personal.
Now it's just cool to see Rodriguez illustrate his boba fett story...
Its the Spartan helmet and armor, with backpack rocket... That's why I and my friends loved the action figure. Case Closed!
I was a kid when Empire came out. Part of what added to Boba's allure was the three year long wait between Empire and Return. After Empire, I couldn't've cared less about Jabba the Hutt, which was just a name mentioned a couple of times, and being a kid, I couldn't afford to watch these movies more than once in theaters, so the name was quickly forgotten. During those three years, I was wondering how they were going to rescue Han from Boba Fett.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE his Color Scheme. The OD Green, Yellow, Red and Grey, so Iconic. Just like Mando with the All Chrome and Captain Rex with the White and Blue Accents

In 1996 I got a Boba Fett tattoo on my forearm. He’s has been my favorite character since I first saw The Empire Strikes Back in theaters in 1980. What a class act, Boba Fett and Slave 1 fan for life!

C'mon it's a character that looked tough and mean without even showing his face, what's cooler than that In a movie that was designed to sell toys? Heck, it's why we loved SnakeEyes Later on in Gijoe. Boba being mysterious, at the right hand of the main badguy, and smarter than the heroes made people like him that much more.

Just occurred to me while you were talking about Boba back-sassing Vader that Boba probably knew Anakin or knew of him (I don't remember if they ever actually met in Clone Wars). But either way, as a big player in the underworld, Boba would probably know about Anakin's "downfall" from Jedi to Sith lord and maybe even how Anakin was manipulated into it by the Emperor. If that's the case, being a Mandalorian, Boba would have viewed Vader with contempt for being so weak. That would explain why he sounds so unimpressed by Vader.

Wow! Since there was no internet back then, plus I was a kid and didn't watch the news, I had no idea Boba Fett was in a parade before he was even in a movie. I didn't get to watch the holiday special because my dad wanted to watch a movie. I'm still broken up over that. lol
I was a young teen when Return came out, so Boba's end was funny. It didn't bother kids. Maybe adults who were sooo in love with him, but it was just a comical scene.
I loved Boba Fett, but also loved Bossk. A cool dude in battle-worn armor and a lizard man. They were awesome.

I was a die-hard fan of Boba Fett since his first appearance in the SW trilogy, although I was just a small boy back then...but after reading the book The Bounty Hunter Wars I have started to worship this chracter ;-)

In Lego Star Wars TCS he was literally the most useful character besides "lightning" sith characters
He could fly like r2, shoot missiles, shoot lasers, use the grappling gun, and iirc also open both bounty hunter and stormtrooper doors

Great video - watched the originals upon release and still learned a lot about his character development.
In the cast array of SW material available now, there have been so many character names, both iconic and questionable. But one item I would mention is that Boba Fett has an all-time, perfect full name. He’s never just one or the other. Always “Boba Fett” - easy to say, hard to forget.

Yep not urban legend. I have the Battlestar Galactica ships, the Colonial one I got first that shot missiles, and Cylon one i got later just popped, extended and stayed attached. My friend growing up had the opposite. Kenner made Boba Fett with the shooting backpack with a similar mechanism, and marketed the mail in offer that way. Think of a small hard plastic pen cap that can shoot across a room. Battlestar ran from 1978 to 1979, Empire came out in 1980 . Plenty of kids probably choked or lost an eye with Battlestar Galactica toys for Kenner to start changing the design mid production.

I watch Star Wars in the theater and when Empire came out I wanted to be Boba more than a Jedi. Once Kotor came out it solidified my love for the Mandalorians and their culture. Book of Boba is continuing that love for the true Antihero legend.
It's all about showing characteristics and not telling.
I liked that little Portal Sentry Turret reference, Portal is a very underrated game

In 1980 we paid to watch movies in theatres where we couldn't freeze, rewind, or magnify single frames so small moments of screen time were much more intriguing. Also, Boba Fett was catapulted to stardom when Elliot played with his action figure in E.T.
I was 6 when Empire came out and Boba was everyone’s favorite in my class. Star Wars had a lot of mystery with many characters that weren’t explained and as a kid that inspired me to let my imagination run wild.
I remember meeting Jeremy bulloch when I was younger and from that point onwards, no other star wars character had me hooked more than boba fett

The Book of Boba Fett was a great show. It is full of emotional development, experience and character change. Here is a planet where fett is at home and needs to be protected. Old times are still mysteries. There’s politics here, godfather, etc ... it was great, thank you disney for giving money to the team who were able to bring this set and atmosphere together at such a level!
Ya know, for someone who grew up, just outside of the Star Wars craze (I think because my older brothers were SO into it , it naturally made me.......rebel.....against it. Heh heh? Shadows Of The Empire also built Boba Fett's image up. He was crafty, fully loaded and ready for ya, in that game.

The introduction in the Holiday Special was where the interest started. That was compounded with the mail away Kenner figure. Both those actions had kids aged 5 - 15 at that time talking him up. I know, because I was there. By the time Empire came out, Fett was already an enigmatic figure in kids minds fueled by their imagination. This was not like any other Star Wars character. They were all introduced on film first. This influenced countless children as they grew up and THEY added books , comics, and fan content to the lore. THAT’s how Fett grew into what “most” of you came to know. It was the love and interest generated in the late 70’s early 80’s when Fett was just an idea that the kids of that time could build in their own minds.
Certainly ROTJ fell short of that. But that’s because Lucas really didn’t care about Fett. He was just another minor character to him at that time. But the kids of that time did.
It makes sense that boba could get away with more with vader because of Anakins relationship with rex.
When I was young I was pretty fortunate to see the original trilogy first and on vhs tapes my uncle had before they started releasing all the 'special/enhanced editions' every other year. I remember seeing Boba Fett as a kind of out of place character in a way, like he was too lethal to not be a main bad guy in ESB and ROTJ despite never really taking part in much action. Also whenever he talked I always got this feeling of unease as if he was better off being completely silent, but also feeling he only talked when there was purpose to it.
The boba fett cartoon was the best part of the holiday special.
Often the empire/first order’s mistakes against the rebels/resistance was that they were heavy handed, sending an army to do what one competent mandolorian could have done. Remember in The Force Awakens when they’re trying to find the map, so they send a legion of storm troopers to burn a village and murder everyone? They could have sent one skilled ninja-esque dude and would not have created so much ill will with the villagers and tipped everyone off about their designs. I’m so glad that The Mandolorian and Book of Boba Fett are taking the Star Wars universe forward as the interesting, intelligent, and competent anti-heroes that we can root for, instead of the tired preachy religious Jedi and rebels vs the bumbling quasi Nazi empire. It’s much more compelling and engaging and unpredictable compared to the movies that have rehashed the same plot over and over.
Anyone who had the Boba Fett figure before ESB got it as a free giveaway from Kenner through a mail-in offer. THAT probably had the most to do with his popularity. But someone who wasn't born when the original trilogy came out probably wouldn't know that. Good video, though (except the ads).

One thing that adds to the mythology is... Boba Fett, as character-design wouldn't be out of reach for the people watching.
Jedi and Sith are nice and cool, but they are something special, something you not just become by training (though it was originally vague how Jedi and Sith become what they are), but Boba is not some space-magician, not some high-ranking General, not a Princess or Prince. He's not part of a nobility or aristocracy.
He's literally just a man in a suit of armor with weapons and gadgets at his disposal. And that is, if the average watcher would live inthe SW-universe, something achievable. No, I don't mean everyone would be able to achieve it, I mean that it is technically never out of reach to be this character. Same with Han. Han and Boba reflect the very normal type of people in SW. Here's another reason that most don't know about. As a kid during this era, there was only one way to get the Boba Fett action figure. You had to send in the proof of purchases from cereal and a few dollars and wait 6-8 weeks for it to come in the mail. Yes, that's how I got his action figure too.
I was lucky enough to see return in theaters and I have older siblings that informed me of boba and breakdancing at the time…
