Hey Andy , I just want to thank you. My dad is from Kauai, he lived in Oahu, and went to college in California. He met my mom and moved to Illinois. We visit Hawaii for the holidays and I go for a month during the summer. When I come back I'm in a terrible almost depressed mood. I think of memories and fun times. It makes me cry (I'm a boy). Your videos help me maintain "Hawaii" without sadness. Thanks Andy.
What?! Is so powerful!!! I literally got tense when you said it...Like Andy said if you aren't from Hawaii and you bust out the "what" you better know how to dodge a false crack cause it's a 98% chance it's coming from anyone(keiki/tutu etc.). That's for real kine.
I got written up plenny times my intern year of residency (on the Mainland) for the "What's Up Wit Dat?!" look, and I was told I had to control my body language. At least I never wen say what I was thinking!
This episode was classic!!!! I was cracking up cuz it was right on popcorn. One thing to add: I always tell folks who are not so familiar with island culture...one way to look more legit is when you trow dah shaka sign, trow um tight, not wide, an' one small flip is nuff...no need for trow all wide and wagging all ovah like one happy dog. Dats touris'. Jus trow um small and tight with one quick head nod and you're good, brah.

Aloha Unko Andy! Mahalo for the laughs! how's about the body language/silent looks from ur parents when we out & about? the "look", talking with ur eyes/ eyebrows, we become silent ventriloquist & kids all of a sudden become lip readers after being deaf to our talking, the come here with pointer, add in pointer & thumb... put it all together..."get ur okole here now! u asked for it, u getting it!" pull of da ear followed by lickens. lol...the "other" body language.
Anada excellent episode! Eh, some of yoa Big Island fans was wala'au about yoa show, & a suggestion came up. What if you made one shirt dat has "Da Daily Pidgin" (or weekly pidgin, when considering yoa weekly show) wit' bird in front, wit' da words "makes me coo!!!" on da back? whatcha t'ink? It's foa da show's fan club? I t'ink it's time!
There was a comedian I saw once...talking about the difference between black and white typical greeting passing someone by...blacks way was change expression to little bit more tough facial expression and look up, da haole way typically look a little nicer in expression(maybe the ol' toothless smile, lips only lol)and look down...I was thinking...da local way...look totally tough in body language, shoulders back, chest out similar to da "wat?!"...tough expression in jus' da eyes...head up one time, but big smile and optional shaka! You should talk about how locals talk enthusiastically wit da arms making any kine, crazy facial expressions and sudden changes in stance fo emphasize stuffs...I think in pidgin to da max the definition of "local style" describes it well...I heard somewhere that this mode as well as other things about pidgin(in addition to why we say "one" instead of "a") are Portuguese influenced. Can expand on dis topic little bit?
I wonder if there is a body language gesture for "Why !" ? (I remember Andy doing a bit about how to use "What !?" and "Why ?!" in a situation (old comedy album)
Classmate from Florida whispered to me during a class lecture "do you have any gum?" I was a couple seats diagonally across behind her so I gestured "no moa"...She waited till the lecture ended and asked me again so I re-did the gesture and told her "I no Moa"....She asked me how I didn't know if I had gum if I had more.....She thought the gesture meant "maybe I have" and when I said "no moa" she thought I meant "I have more".........................
I think you gotta throw in the "Howzit - head tilt/nod" when addressing unsolicited "eye contact" BEFORE automatically defaulting to the "What?!" stance. As Andy mentioned, growing up in the 808, staring/eye contact can be perceived as rude/disrespectul. Das jus' the lover in me. Okay I pau awwweady. Go Monarchs!

Eh, howz about making big body wen you stay like use, "What, boddah you?" and one moa, da Filipino-style pointing oar dea wit da lips? Try 'um, my wife all da time make lie dat, especially wen we go store and she like fo' me to get da kine grocery from da shelf and she stay pushing da wagon and no like use her hands.
