I'll never forget watching this match. No one believed Stefi could beat this new young maestra. Hingis, in a terrible moment of hubris, claimed Graf "was old, that her time had passed". This day in tennis history, Stefi showed the world the difference between a great player and an immortal champion.
Graf was past her best. She retired shortly after this match.

No. She was already past her best. Her body had already broken down.
Beset by injuries and with her desire to play tournament tennis waning, it was time to call it a day. As the world's best player from '87 to '96, she was in decline and the Williams sister were poised to take over. Very few retire at the top and Graf was no exception.

I was born in 1988 and my parents named me Steffi as they were, and still are, huge tennis fans. Steffi Graf is one of the greatest players ever!
Just think that in Brazil parents have named their son "TARDELLI", because of Marco Tardelli, italian soccer player in the 80's. They EVEN chose the surname !

Graf had so much class and style. She decided to end her legendary career after winning her last grand slam at 29. She didn't wait till her 40s to retire. She stands alone as having won 22 majors before even turning 30.
A knife in Seles's back also collaborated with that feat.

And than this impact and in Wimbledon she was the last time in the final 1999 in the way to number 2 in the World she that Goodbye forever. 374 Weeks nb 1 longest time for WTA Golden Slam and so on. I don't know much about history and suddenly this video came on my list and that's what made me to watch this match. Martina was steeply rising on her career these days and the match turned completely against her when she challenged the chair umpire's decision. Of course Mrrina had a very valid point and she argued rather than ignored it. Then the crowd came on and always yelling Steffi Steffi and it really broke Martina in her game. As far as concerned Martina was far far ahead in this game and she did completely unethical things towards the end of this game. She crossed the net which I've never seen any player has done in this stage of a game. Also her underarm serve I've never ever seen in a final.
I never can say Steffi played her full spirit on this game. But after that point, with this support of the crowd broke Martina.
I was so happy when Graf beat Hingis in this match. She had made some disparaging comments about Graf prior to the match....Great win for Graf...

I remember, watching this final i n1999 with 3 tennis friends and also Steffi fans like mine. The moment Steffi got that 3:3 in 2nd set, we knew she could win this. This has been the game changer. "Age" doesnt matter if you have this brilliant eyes, overview and experience Steffi had in this match.

@@faraikadzombe3311 No not really, when compared to her forehand, her backhand was the lesser. She did possess probably the best slice backhand of all time. It was consistent and she hit it with some bite. It helped her win many Wimbledon titles

Steffi Graf was such an immensely talented and classy player. Even though she retired at ONLY at 30 years of age, dealt with injuries (ankle injury, knee surgery and many more), personal problems dealing with her dad Peter Graf's income tax evasion, alcoholism, extramarital affair and generally high unforced errors in her games all throughout her career, she still managed to claim 22 grand slam titles, a golden slam and gold at Seoul Olympics. I still believe Steffi Graf is the GOAT in women's tennis. Women's tennis has never been the same after she retired.

I was 14 years old when this match played, and I can remember it so well. I thought Graf was done, was about to turn off the tv, but suddenly felt compelled to stay with her to the end - when you're a fan you feel a sense of kinship with your favourite players, no matter how irrational it really is. Seeing her come back from the brink has got to be my favourite tennis memories.
I think almost all Steffi fans had tears in their eyes in the end.
Steffi: "I feel French" -- love it. Total class act who retired with grace and elegance. A legend whose Golden Grand Slam has yet to be matched.

I've been a huge fan of Steffi, and I remember I also liked Hingis somehow cos she was from my generation along with Anna Kournikova. But I rooted for Steffi 1000% everytime she plays against Hingis. No question. I wish there were more players like Steffi Graf these days, who plays with so much grace and her footwork is just so beautiful! How she moves on court with such elegance, and yet with so much power. I love it!

Man, when you watch these older videos you really appreciate how much faster paced the game was. Promptly moving between points, no going for the towel after every point, etc. I guess we all sweat less in the 90s?
I think poor Goran spoiled it for all of us. I think that's one of the first matches - the '01 Wimbledon final, where he kept going for a towel between points, using the time to focus and what not. Players took note and afterwards they spend more time wiping with the towel than playing....
You are right here, i agree fully with your comment, i love tennis, and am from a generation where the big stars were Graf, Edberg, Becker etc, never stopped following tennis since and still love the game but cannot feel but frustrated at all these towel use between each point, the time spent between points, the drinking at change overs during a tie break etc etc etc it spoils it for me!

They were true sportsmen and women in those days. Players of both sexes nowadays use the constant towelling as part of their armoury..and the grunting. And devoid of versatility. Which is why it’s no longer watchable except for a Nadal, Federer match.
i disagree, today the pace is way faster, maily because the rackets allow the players to generate a lot of pace, watchig a match from the 1990s is like watching a exibition match, too many shorts balls and players have a lot of time to react, today you need to react very fast or you lose the point.
I remember watching this live on RAI Italy. I watched tennis because of Steffi Graf for all my teenage years and I stopped when she retired. I remember the great battles with Monica Seles, it was an object of discussion among classmates at school. Graf is like a Ferrari, like Federer, elegant, smart and fast. She deserved to win this match. What she said to Hingis in the final speech was pure class, I could not understand it when I watched it the first time but now I did. Top of the world! Really lovely. I always felt like Federer modelled many parts of his game after Graf. It would make sense considering he was developing as a tennis player during Graf's era.

Come on, likes of Monica Seles and many other have demonstrated to be great champions and inspiring human beings under the age of 18. I was never a Seles fan because I'm a huge Graf fan. However, when Seles was dominating and lost a match, she was very gracious to her opponent. She rarely made excuses for her loss and just moved on to the next match.
The crowd was actually more behaved compared to the crowd in Roland Garros nowadays especially in the finals like this.

The real GOAT Steffi Graf. People are quick to forget the greats. Steffi was equally great on all four surfaces; hard, clay, grass and carpet. No one used the entire court like Graf did. That beautiful footwork, that low slice to set up the best forehand in the women’s game.
As a Steffi Graf fan, I was overjoyed to see her win the 1999 French Open and then making it all the way to the Wimbledon final. Steffi’s last year on tour reminded me of that racing horse movie where everyone thought that thoroughbred’s time was done after a major injury. Just like the movie and to the delight of her fans, especially this one writing this comment 😇, Steffi was able to reclaim her glorious level one last time with a grand slam win!
If you think about it, Steffi winning her first and last slam at the French Open was like beautiful story bookends to her amazing tennis career 🎉👏!!!

@@Menexpert I believe she hurt herself during the latter part of the Venus Williams quarter final match but she was able to win. Her injury must have been manageable where her team rehabbed it for her semifinal match but it took a toll resulting in a loss in the final vs Lindsay Davenport. Still an amazing Wimbledon run but sadly her last. Kudos to Lindsay and as a competitor, she was very respectful unlike others we know.

Martina Hingis changed her name to Martina UnHINGED AFTER THIS! I loved it when Graf said at the trophy presentation to Hingis: "You're going to have so many chances to win," and it DIDN'T HAPPEN! Hingis annoyed me no end, starting with back in '97 when Hingis called Graf a has been. After that day, my mind was made up. I rooted for anyone playing Hingis.
Hingis won 20 majors though across doubles/mixed doubles after this. That's not shabby even by Serena William's standard
Had forgotten and just now looked her record up. When Steffi said that to her and seeing the meltdown I legit was under the impression this was perhaps Hingis' first grand slam final. Hardly!! She was certainly a pro with several titles under her belt. Perhaps - MAYBE - the meltdown was due to the fact that this was her second French Open final and if she would have pulled it off, it would have given her that coveted, rare designation of being a winner of all four grand slams of tennis. After all, French Open is notorious for being the one that gets away for even the greats. It eluded Sampras, and Agassi and Federer, for all their multiple wins in other grand slams, squeaked by with one win ( though potentially Federer still has more chances).

It's interesting to note that Steffi's least favorite surface was clay ... yet she was so dominant on it. Also, what's equally impressive was the fact she won all of her 22 grand slams before turning 30.

Steffi favorite surface is on clay...she said that in an interview...since she grew up practicing on the surface as the nearby courts in her home in Germany was on clay...she won a record 9 German Open (played pn clay) and 6 Grandslam on the French Open were the testament on her love of clay....actually her game is built on clay...she slides beautifully...Justine Henin modeled her game after her

There's a documentary where Steffi says that clay is her favorite surface.
I think what he means is power players find clay frustrating because the slow clay takes the sting out of their weapons. Grafs punishing forehand and low slice backhand sit up more on clay versus say grass. Grinder counter punchers prefer clay. Think of Federer and his struggles at the FO. So Graf may have felt comfortable on clay from her youth but it is still legit to say her natural shot making aggressive tools were blunted somewhat by the slow red clay
The call/non-call was a symptom; not the cause of Hingis's demise. Hingis was starting to feel the effects of a punishing physical contest as early as 3-2, in the second set. Her legs were starting to go. From this point onwards, you start seeing her double- over in fatigue from chasing down Grafs shots. Graf wanted a physical running match; Hingis wanted a chess game. Hingis was not a sprinter like Graf but read the game incredibly well and had outstanding anticipation ( a bit like Chris Evert). This allowed Hingis to set up and hit her very precise groundstrokes, which were full of disguise. She also took the ball very early and used her opponents pace against them crafting sharp angles. Hingis did this to great effect in the first set. She never over-powered her opponents. She was handling dynamite, but as long as she controlled the center of the court and did not get stretched wide, she was in control. But as she tired and became leg-weary, you see the increase in 'emergency' tactics and shots at full stretch. The 3-2 game was the beginning of the turnaround. Her serve becomes less and less effective. Graf starts running her from side to side, stretching her wider and wider, and her legs start to go. Hingis had to win in straight sets because a third set would favour the faster and more powerful Graf. This is also a big reason why Hingis reacts the way she does: "Bathroom break" to stall and regroup, then line call complaints and serving underhand. Old tactics used to disrupt momentum. She knew she was running on empty and her moment was gone.
Oh please, are you all Graf fans? I never even saw Hingis playing until today, but she was clearly better until the corrupt call, with Graf calmly accepting the undeserved points. Not the mark of a great character.

Steffi saved the match at 4-5 down in the 2nd set with a topspin backhand passing shot. Her topspin backhand wasn't something she had true confidence in. To hit that winner so close to losing the match...mark of a true champion!!!
It's interesting because, in the 1988 Wimbledon's final, Steffi hit a lot of backhand topspin shots. I guess she felt she needed to against Navratilova and not against others. Although her slice was more of a weapon, especially on grass, than people realized. It also allowed her to cheat and play her forehand more often.
She was hitting topspin backhands during training but could not do it on matches ...Imagine how many matches she would have won. Her sliced backhand was more a way to set up her amazing forehand.
Yes, that backhand winner from Steffi after such a long rally was the turning point of the match.

No way. Watch Steffi's game with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in Wimbledon '95, that was epic!!! It's also on TH-cam to watch in full from Wimbledon's channel. I tell you, that was the most exciting match I've seen Steffi play. Arantxa and Steffi, both of them just won't give up. They've got superb rallies on that match, and probably one of the most exciting deuce battle in history! Go see it if you didn't witness it in '95.

its not about being right or wrong: there are just rules that have to be respected by EVERYONE.. there were a lot of bad calls through out tennis history. that hingis reacted that way just showed: she was super nervous to play the legend, she had called disrespectfully "a past time player" the day befoire. moreover she had said: she would prove in this final that grafs time has passed. given the fact graf being injured for so long time hingis had to prove that her own rise to number 1 wasnt just an accident of tennis history. this question was answered: not only steffi beat in this tournament the number 3-2 -1-player. three weeks later she reached the final of wimbledon. no question graf would have been number 1 again at the us open. if she wouldnt have retired before. already she had climbed to number 3 position in the ranking.

This is what I loved. Often in her career, Steffi wasn't the crowd favorite, but they were squarely on her side and the utter joy she showed after winning was remarkable.

Yeah that was the best era of womens tennis, by far! Also Kim Clijsters was and is incredible, she was a class act, just a great personality, although she wasn't in that era of the 90s, maybe late 90s into the 2000s I think, she had amazing speed and could chase down a ball like no other, powerful strong legs, one of my all time favorites!
I prefer Henin & Clijsters, they played an men's game & no screaming which should have been banned if onerous & the Williams sisters did so illegally in my ears. Good riddance to them & Sharapova was another.
Graf always had the upper hand in their rivalry winning 7 out of 9 matches. Hingis only managed two wins and both were in 3 sets and Steffi was injured in one of them. She had the power and speed to beat Hingis. Steffi vs peak Williams sisters would have been something to see.
This is when Hingis said that Graf is washed up and too old. Little did Martina know know that it was herself, not Graf, who would never again win a Grand Slam event. I was never much into women's tennis but this was one of the most satisfying matches I have ever seen.

I wasn't a Hingis fan as I was a fan of Seles and Graf, but now after so many years I feel like Martina was such an amazing young player AND so talented not only in Singles, but doubles AND mixed. I feel bad for that moment she was only 19 years old.
Haha. Hingis had won 3 of the 4 grand slam titles in 1997, and the first in 1998. Failing only in the French Open final. She was the youngest ever grand slam winner at just 16 when winning the Australian Open in 1997.

It all turned out against her, simply because Graf was a much much better player than her. Graf was sidelined by a knee injury/ operation that's why Hingis emerged.
It was great from Graf to prove that in this historical match.

Even in the end when all is said and done, despite Hingis berating Steffi, Steffi still had the humility and class to try and console Hingis on the stage with some encouraging words yet Hingis still arrogantly turned away, shook her head and moved away from Steffi. I feel sorry for the umpire at the end when the crowd boo her as she receives her plate. You can see she’s visibly upset. No need for that. This type of match is probably every officials worst nightmare. Close calls, players acting up and hostile crowds. Perfect storm. The crowd were so heavily involved in this match you can understand boos and jeers then. But when the match is over during the award ceremony? That was quite disrespectful and unnecessary.

What an incredible emotional roller coaster this match was. I remember watching it live and wanting Graf,, who’s a few weeks older than me, to slap down the petulant, bratty, yet uber- talented Hingis.
I found the end of the match so entertaining with everything falling in Steffi’s favor after some crazy antics from her young opponent. I was surprised that I actually felt really bad for Hingis when she got so upset and cried before the award ceremony…. pretty hard to do after it appeared she smacked her mother who was trying to calm her down.
I never liked Hingis, and this match demonstrates why.

Just watched the majority of this whole video for the first time since I remember watching the match. Seems as tho almost all of the line balls went steffi's way and there were some no calls that Steffi hit that looked like they should have been called out. Granted most occurred after the initial crossing over the net call, so perhaps the lineman and referee were giving Steffi the benefit for the remainder of the match. Hingis really was brutal to watch

At this stage of her career in 99, I always thought Hingis had the potential to win another 7 or 8 Grand Slam singles titles... I wonder if she regrets not having won a French Open, especially when she was a warm favorite going into both finals she competed in? Hingis losing to Majoli in 97 was similar to Graf losing to Sanchez-Vicario in 89 - both could have completed The Grand Slam in those years and created a little bit of extra tennis history.

I applaud Hingis's mother, who was consoling yet made her daughter get back out there for the trophy ceremony and be a gracious runner-up in spite of her emotions. The mom consoled and acknowledged the emotions and also steered/taught her daughter to do what she did not feel like doing because it was right and respectful. It could have equally been mother and coach, but I just have a gut feeling it was more the mother who was able to get her daughter back out there and do the right thing.
Considering that Mommy Molitor was responsible for Hingis' terrible behavior, she should have dragged the brat kicking and screaming back on court. She should have then turned to Steffi Graf and offered a sincere apology for her daughter. This woman was no saint, and her comments about both Graf and Seles were about as classy as Hingis' antics.

I was 12 years old and a big fan of Steffi Graf. After Hingis' outbursts (complaining, underhand serves etc.) I could understand the crowd's reaction. It seems harsh nowdays, but Hingis had no one to blame but herself. This was the turning point of her career.
I was the same age and the biggest Steffi fan. And agreed with you at large for many years, she didn't do herself any favours. She was still a kid though and the crowd was harsh. She was 18 and in the pressure of the situation. The French crowd is a very strange one.
