  • This New Tail piano cover from Dreamworks' How To Train Your Dragon was a long time coming, and it's one of my favorite tracks from John Powell's score! New Tail uses several unique ethnic instruments including the hurdy-gurdy, the yayli tanbur, and the sopilka whistle, which I explained in my video on the score's unique cultural influences (linked below in the comments). This track also uses the Fate Theme (basically Hiccup's theme) and one of the Viking themes when Hiccup and Toothless take off.
This piano cover is based off the official scorebook from Omni Music Publishing and Alex Sheen's arrangement for two pianos, which I used for the bassy percussion.

To learn more about the many unique ethnic instruments in this track (and the rest of the score) and to learn how the Fate Theme at the start ties in with Jewish music check out this video! th-cam.com/video/-ZZw2a0Q6Qs/w-d-xo.html

Dat hurdy gurdy, amirite? Fun fact, the motif starting at 2:21 is the part that made me originally want to buy the score when I heard it in theaters. I was ecstatic to hear it return in Dragon Racing. I might be wrong, but I don't think it appears in HTTYD3 :(

Yeah, it's tough to come close to the feeling of that hurdy-gurdy and yayli tanbur at the start! When I revisited this recently I added the pedal and that helped a lot.
I think that motif at 2:21 is the B section for the "Fun Viking Tune," as it's called (what plays just before and after that part). I plan to explain that in a big video, but that's at least two video essays from now. And I think you're right; I think it only plays here and in Dragon Racing, but it's so much fun! Both versions are played by uilleann pipes and I compared it to a guitar solo in my bagpipes video.

Really beautiful, the middle part is calm and mysterious and the end is epic and the fact is not just the "melody core" but there are many notes is amazing because we feel the tenseful part and the excitement that comes with it like someone who is travelling across its piano. The only thing I would like to have more, it's more bass notes and power like at 2:12

Thanks, I push for detail in these. It’s basically a slightly simplified version of what’s written for the full orchestra, plus the exotic instruments.

@@FilmScoreandMore that was incredibly well-done, you picked the right instruments

So, I sat down and listened to this during my school's lunch and I ended up getting goosebumps, not just chills, when the "Fate Theme" came up. That's never happened before, so, uh... congrats!...? I really like what you've done here. I can hum along and imagine the orchestra in addition to this piano, and I enjoy that. I can totally see why you were excited to get this out!

Wow, that’s good! It’s interesting how goosebumps work, when and how they show up. And the start of this track has such unique tone, dramatic and serious, but like getting down to business.
