I was witnessing to this homeless person, and he told me one of the reasons he did not want to attend church was because he didn't have anything to wear. He said he was embarrassed because everyone was dressed up. How do you explain to someone like that to wear their Sunday best? Another person I was witnessing too said the reason he did not attend church was because he truthfully said that he couldn't pay attention because of the way women dressed. Tight dresses short skirts high heels and revealing of the upper body.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬
I've experimented with this...I was more humbled when I didn't get a haircut and didn't shave. And I also didn't dress up like I usually do, just more casual. But when I did get a haircut and a fresh shave. I cared a lot more about my outer appearance. To brush my hair. Products. Looked in the mirror a lot more. Now, to those who dress up in their Sunday best. And this is just a question to ask yourself. Not trying to sound rude at all. But as you walk around all dressed up, do you not focus on yourself more? Make sure everything looks good every five minutes? Does is not affect the way you worship because of what your wearing? Men and women. Now when u go casual. Don't you feel more free? Free of distractions. From clothes and your outer appearance. As a child of God each should dress appropriately to what's God and acceptable to God and to respect your brothers and sisters in Christ. “Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Women and men let's not dress inappropriately so that a brother or sister who has a problem with lust of the eyes will stumble.
A person who has nothing will look upon someone who has suits and things of that sort, higher than themselves. Are some of us blessed? Yes. But it is our job as brothers and sisters to bring souls to Christ in a manner in love. To show them we do not care what u look like. Only to show them the way the truth the light that is Yeshua. To make everyone feel welcomed. Feel at home.
You say it is reverence to God to dress appropriately. Would u tell a poor family who comes to a service, that they need to dress in their Sundays best. Wouldn't you embarrass them? Or even if you greeted them in suits and fancy dresses,I guarantee you would make them feel low because they would feel undressed.... Unworthy to attend because of lack of clothes. God is all loving. “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭6:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Isaiah describes dressing the Lord in a robe.... Not a suit. “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬
We are the temple of God. If we accept Yeshua as our Lord and savior, God dwells within us. “Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭7:48‬ ‭KJV
“Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things?”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭7:49-50‬ ‭KJV‬‬
A temple‬‬ is a man made place dedicated to God, But he does not dwell in it. A temple is a place where believers can congregate to have a place to worship together. The more believers together, the stronger the presence of God. The people make the church. Nowhere does it say in scripture to build God temples. But to build a church.
So to pay reverence to God is to pay respect to one self. Not adorning your outer appearance. But dressing respectfully without thinking highly of yourself. Let's concentrate on building a bigger truthful church, rather than quarreling about rules and regulations of man made temples. God bless and may the peace of Yeshua be with you all. Love you all Brothers and Sisters in Christ

While I agree with your understanding of dress you should know a bit about the "why?" Of dressing up on Sunday. Particularly in African American and in certain segments of southern whites dressing up serves two purposes. One is to show reverence to God, to acknowledge that coming into God's presence as a body is a special occasion (like a prom or wedding). Second, for many who work (or in honor/memory of those who did) in jobs where they get little respect, church was a place where they could be treated with dignity because God treated them with dignity. The point here is that it's not hypocrisy but the desire to honor God and each other and express a sense of self respect that lies behind many individuals dressing up for church when they don't otherwise.

We have a dress code for our congregation. "Please wear some. Nudity is distracting."
Pastoral leaders usually wear button downs and slacks. Musicians usually about the same or slightly less formal--the drummer often wears shorts, for example.
Elders cover the spectrum. Most wear about the same button down/slacks, some go with Ts &jeans, and I may wear a suit & tie, or vest instead of jacket. This means that any visitor won't feel completely out of place regardless of attire.
For context, we're in a college town, and about 40% of our Sunday population is from the local uni. But we have a very high percentage of grad students, post docs, and visiting scholars (most internationals).

I like to dress up a bit on sundays when I'm on stage, mostly I go for a longer shirt and dark jeans.

In my church those leading worship are required to wear what is prescribed in canon law. Choir and servers were vesture suitable for their role but underneath whatever they are comfortable with. Everyone else ranges from something more formal to jeans but these are not ripped. For the morning service no one has yet to wear shorts and perhaps there are deemed a little too casual for the Eucharist. Saying that in the summer for the evening service I have worn chino shorts if not leading.

Where I’m worshipping (Pentecostal) this is a touchy subject LOL but I see both of your viewpoints and realize new comers either relate or feel “judged” if we are “overdressed” for the occasion. I’ve seen a visiting bishop minister to a youth group and his bishop rope and necklace and ring and everything and he could not reach the youth. He literally and physically separated himself from them by what he had on. Therefore his message never got past the pulpit.

I realize that the Holy Spirit lives within our bodies and clothes do not affect that. However, dressing formally and modestly for church shows a reverence for God in wearing something special for the occasion of going to Church. For example people dress in a special formal way to a wedding or school prom. Why isn't going into God's presence warrant the same effort in preparation?
Brady mentioned that there is no theological backing to dressing formally but I disagree. The Israelite priests of the Levite tribe had specific priestly garments that they wore in the congregation tent. God gave specific instructions to Moses in how to craft these garments and the congregation tent so the dress code was not a man-made doctrine.
Also in Exodus 19:10 God orders the Israelites to wash themselves before being in his presence.
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai."
Dressing in a certain way to appease the congregation and attract new comers to the church is futile. The leadership in the church should primarily seek to please God first and serve as role models for the congregation. What will you have left if you just sway with the cultural norms?

Here's a thought... It doesnt matter. We get way too obsessed over this. Its not about impressing someone or "attracting" new people with our dress. Not to be super "cliche" but its about Him. That's it. I do things on stage all the time & me, I like dressing nice on Sunday. Sometimes that means jeans & t-shirt and other days a full suit. How youre treated is more important. I do feel like you ought to look your best but you should dress to your churches culture... like you said. As long as its not in a rebellious attitude then no one cares.

  • @Ironworthstriking

Call me old school, but those examples were way too casual in my opinion, aside from just looking generally bad. Especially if you’re on stage, I think a modicum of respect should be expected through the clothes worn by staff. If I were running a church my staff dress code for men would be:
    Button down shirt
Jeans are allowed but must be dark wash with no distressing.
    Leather shoes (no sneakers)
    No hats
    No shorts
In reality this is still very casual, but is a cut above what you’d wear to a burger joint. It shows a bit of reverence and respect for the environment. No need for a three piece suit, but clothing obviously reflects something about who we are inside, so a little bit of formality is important.

The church I attend to its a nondenominational Church but we came from the Pentecostal side of things and to this day everyone who goes up the stage has to be wearing formal cloths. I served in the a worship team at the church and about 4 year ago things changed from having to wear formal clothes to now wearing uniforms. I’m growing tired of it, the nuance of it faded it long ago and now I don’t know what to do. My opinion is unpopular so me bring up this topic to my Pastor would be something he doesn’t want to hear.

Dress is not need for our GOD.GOD sees our heart...I not mean we can wear all kind of dresses when we attend the church...
Let you think about if you are going to meet your national leader like president, how would you dress up yourself?.. I think it would be more formal.
But I'm not insisting that we should wear formal dress when we attend church..
One thing! We can wear good dress as we can... We couldn't force poor people to wear good dresses..
So whatever we wear, but it should be good and in manner of honor our LORD.

Times have changed and I understand it’s good to come respectful before the lord to church and come with suit/tie, to look presentable and not look like we just came out of bed. BUT coming to church suit and tie don’t mean that I’m a better looking Christian than anyone else. Cuz many of us look good outside but dirty inside our spirits😬.

I think we as believers need to be mindful of who we serve. I think we believe it's about us... it's not. We were created to give God honor and worship in every aspect of our lives. Yes God has granted us Grace for this dispensation but we should always consider him first. This conversation sounds like we give God what we choose and not what he commands. We have to stop watering down God's truth. Leadership should represent God well, in our behavior and also in our appearance. Sounds like I'm being strict, but I'm just pointing out how we have changed things for comforts' sake. Jesus, from what I've read, never said "let me change so others feel comfortable with my father's truth." Church seems like a social club now a day's. 🤷🏾‍♀️ praying for us all dear brothers and sisters. Believe me, my heart has been pricked and thank God for it!
