This first retrograde of 2021 made me finally do the shadow work. Its barely 3 days in and... I cant even explain how much more self aware I am. Its a happy, scary, sad, enlightening feeling... I feel myself slowly getting stronger and lighter everyday. (Tip: logging off of social media is helping GREATLY)

I’ve been through many videos on this topic and this is the simplest, easiest explanation. Watching this video made everything click end I immediately started thinking of behaviors potentially suppressed from my childhood. Thank you for compassionately explaining this and mentioning the positive and perceived negative aspects of our personalities. Hi Elza 🌻 Stumbled upon this video while I was looking up shadow-work and journalling prompts. I decided to do the exercise and I have completed 9 days as of today (I started on the 20th). What a great exercise! - I learnt of shadow-work, last year, quite unintentionally so I was somewhat familiar with the subject. Your exercise has been the most intentional of all the shadow-work I have done so far. I am loving what is coming up to the surface. I would not be able to see or accept things for what they are or the insights coming in, before but now it feels natural! In the way that I knew this exercise would be difficult but I also knew I was ready to dive in. Thank you! The intro in your video helped too. Shadow-work is tricky but the more and more I undertake it, especially intentionally, I look forward to what I might be able to unearth and dislodge etc. from my systems. Thank you again! So I started doing shadow work recently, and I was wondering what I need to do after journaling , how do I take action towards bettering myself using what I've journaled? Because I find it difficult to say, "If I catch myself repeating this toxic pattern, I'll stop myself because now I know better" Its not easy for me to do that because after journaling and becoming aware of so many of my unconscious beliefs and patterns, I cant focus on trying to heal and correct so many different things at once.
hi! first of all what I would say is: pick one thing at a time. don't try to do everything at once. second thing: if there are beliefs you wish to work on that you have uncovered now, then you can use "the work" by Katie Byron to change those beliefs into better ones. the work can be found as a worksheet on her website or you can download an app that will guide you through 10 steps or so which you can use to dismantle your old belief and build a better one. the better one can then be a part of your morning affirmations or something you write down and keep somewhere visible where you will see it each day. if it's a behavioural pattern you wish to change, I would try to figure out in which situations you engage in this behavior the most. and then focus on catching yourself in these situations. it might take a while or at first only work in retrospect. but catching yourself in retrospect is still amazing because slowly it teaches your brain to catch yourself before you engage in the behavior. you can also give that behaviour or the situations in which it most often occurs a name (e.g. this is my rejecting Richard move or something like that) so your brain has something to hold on to and remember. thirdly, if it is a behavioural pattern you seem to not be able to deal with on your own- ask people around you that you trust to help you become aware of when you exhibit this pattern when they're around. you can also ask for professional help, always. if it's a very specific pattern you can always try to get books/videos/workshops... on it, inform yourself on it from a psychological standpoint. fourth: find an alternative reaction/behavior. be very explicit about what you want to replace this pattern with. lastly. please try to give yourself grace and compassion. behavioural and cognitive patterns take time to change. so don't try everything at once, take it slow, and be compassionate if it takes a while and much practice. you're doing great. I hope this gives you some ideas!

Hello. A couple of years ago, I came across the phrase Shadow Work. I kinda thought I knew how to do it.lol Anyway, this past christmas, I had a pretty bad fall out with my wife. Were separated. A few signals got crossed that resulted in me lashing out by way of text in a pretty horrible way. Its been like a pattern between the two of us. Earlier today, I called and apologized to her and during our conversation she asked if I knew anything about shadow work. It brought the subject back to my memory and I began to think of where ive gotten this dark side if you will about my personality and I want to get this part of me under control. When I got home from work this evening I looked up shadow work on youtube and your video came up. Ive been to your website and downloaded your telegram app and id like to get started. Tomorrow morning when I get up, Ill go through the app and look for the challenge and introduce myself to the rest of the group. Thanks for the video and giving a plain explanation on what shadow work is.

Hi my shadow side wants me to know that I stink. Now idk if I stink spiritually or the people in my life I hang out with stinks that I need to isolated myself. Or I stink because I am still stuck in my old ways. Any tips???
I don't know if I fully get you- so a part of you thinks you're a bad person in some way? you could try to meditate and ask this specific part to clarify what exactly it doesn't like about you and what you should change. and to answer you could try journaling with your non-dominant hand. that's a technique that sometimes works for me. I hope this helps!
great idea! let me know how it goes if you want. but also, you're allowed to take more time for each prompt if you want. so if you do 1, 5, 11 prompts- do what feels good! you don't need to cram 11 prompts into 11 days if that starts to become too much during the holiday craziness
change does not always come from awareness. what you need to change can become apparent from what you now know. you might need to resolve an emotion that comes with some painful knowledge. you might need to change things about your lifestyle, the people in it, thought or behavioural patterns. what specifically needs to change should be apparent based on the knowledge you gain. and so action needs to follow your awareness. and sometimes your shadow also has positive gifts that you can become aware of and use. hope this helps!

hi! I totally get the impulse to want to rush the speed at which you're healing- especially maybe if a lot of pain or trauma is involved. however, even if you could, I wouldn't try to do this quickly and get "everything out". shadow work can be very emotional and everything needs time to be processed. and the things you find out via journaling might need further work afterwards outside of journaling as well. changing behavior, thoughts, and emotions can take time. so please don't rush and don't force it. your body and heart have to process every bit of new self awareness and change that you're making. and if you wanna do it thoroughly it's not gonna be quick. give yourself the grace and compassion to go slow but steady instead of burning yourself out. and enjoy yourself too, outside of healing work! and I can promise you: the better it gets, the better it gets. there is no need to rush. lots of love to you!

hello! I was on vacation, so I am only replying now- sorry about that. So: I will do the challenge again maybe toward the end of this year or beginning of next year. However, I have a discord group on which many people start the challenge whenever they join the group. and there is a channel on there just for journaling where you and the others on the server can go through the challenge together and talk about it each day if you want to. all you would have to do is join the server and just ask if anyone else wants to start the challenge with you in the journaling channel. I found your Challenge today and felt really emotional about it, especially when you mentioned, that the shadow self is part of our self that was not accepted as a child. I started with the Journaling today (day 1). However, I cannot (yet) connect with my emotions through it. I am writing automatically for pages, that's no problem. But it all comes from my mental side. What am I doing wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this normal? Or part of the shadow, that my mental side was rather accepted than my emotional self?
it's quite normal, especially in the beginning, to connect to the prompts from your mental side. that's how we live a lot of our lives and I think it's easy to step into a cognitive analyser because it helps us keep a bit of distance from our emotions. like you said, it could very well be that your mental side was always accepted, but your emotional side never was (by others and then in turn also yourself). this makes it harder to connect to it. but practice makes perfect. the more you write, the more you will feel safe and your emotions will come up. you can also journal about what you are afraid of when it comes to showing and expressing your emotions. what are the negative consequences you might be expecting? and I would also do lots of grounding meditations, meditative walks, body scans, and maybe yoga. just to help you get into the body and out of the mind. that's just a general practice that might help you connect with your emotions. you can also do a practice that I think teal swan recommended, which is to set a timer every hour or so and to then write down a quick sentence on how you feel. or to just acknowledge how you feel. and in the beginning it might be hard, but it'll get easier with practice and it brings you closer to yourself and your emotional world. lastly, maybe you can also do meditations that help you connect to your heart chakra, sacral, and root chakra. all of these meditations can just be found on TH-cam. hope this helps!
I would actually keep it so you can reread it and learn from it. or so you can compare it to new entries if you ever journal on the same question again- because it can be useful to see if your answers would change and how you have grown. however: your intuition is most important. so if you feel like burning it or throwing it away or doing whatever else release ritual, you are free to do so. it's your writing, so do with it whatever feels right!
do i only have to do it for these 14 days ? because i want to do it every other day but i’m afraid that after i finish i won’t know where to pick up again so i was going to just do this and be done if that makes sense.
doing it every other day is fine too! it's 14 prompts, but in which time you do them is up to you. so if you want to do it every other day, that's cool. if you want to take multiple days for one prompt, that's cool. the prompts don't necessarily have to do anything with each other, so if you have a break in-between, just pick the next prompt on the list! hope this helps

you can start each journal session by reading through the question of the day and then immediately picking up the pen (or opening your laptop) and just writing intuitively whatever comes out. try not to think too much and just write whatever comes to mind. I think you'll find that often times you'll know exactly what to say. if nothing comes to mind you can spend some time meditating and then coming back to the question or picking a different question first. practice helps! and there's no limits to how you write (full sentences, bullet points, drawing...) and what you write- your journal is just for you, so you can write however and whatever you want and feel is best.

you can if that feels right to you! I always advise people to not rush through it, to maybe even take multiple days for one prompt. because they can be intense and powerful and it's important to be kind, compassionate, and soft with yourself. and to let the ideas ruminate and blossom. with that being said, value your intuition above anything and everything else. so if it feels like you can and should do multiple prompts per day then go ahead!
How do u find out these things of the past you didn’t really explain you’re just saying do shadow work . How tho ? like what exactly do I write , what’s the practical process I have to do that’s what we need .
hi! the practical process depends on how well connected to your intuition you are. so what you can do is that you meditate first- do whatever meditation tends to connect you to your body and heart, e.g., body scans or simple mindfulness, or maybe binaural beats... Afterwards, read the question you want to work on and immediately start writing. try not to think too hard and just write whatever comes to mind and heart. write how you feel, what you feel, random thoughts that come out. it doesn't need to make sense at first or fit together. the more often you do this, the more easily you will be able to connect to your intuition and just write automatically. when you feel like you wrote everything that needed to be written, when you feel finished- reread what you wrote and reflect on it again- write how it makes you feel, what thoughts come up... memories that come up will do so naturally as you think on the question. I hope this answers your question! there is no right or wrong way to do this. that's why it is hard to give you an answer as to what exactly you are supposed to write. I would have to know you to be able to tell you that. but if you give your mind, if you give your subconscious and your body a chance to express themselves, over time they will do so naturally. which is something that only makes sense when you sit down and actually try to write. and maybe that will feel silly or unnatural at first, but automatic writing and accessing your intuition is a thing to be practiced. much love!
if you find that nothing comes up when you look at a question and you become frustrated: pick another one. or what you can also do is write exactly that: "I feel frustrated, this feels dumb, I don't know what to do or how to answer this. that makes me feel..." and usually something will come up after that, even if it's just a nice emotional release

yes! you can type if you want. I always advise handwriting because it's more personal and helps me connect more easily. but what matters is what comes naturally to you and what you feel gets you closer to yourself
I'm sure you could but I wouldn't advise it. these questions can be emotionally overwhelming or just tiring and I would advise anyone to take really good care of themselves before and after answering the questions. so that takes time. and I would also say that each question has the potential to be journaled on for quite a bit of time or even to be thought about for a few days. so you can do whatever feels right to you- but I would try not to rush through it, but to take my time
hey! what you have to do is fill out the blank (...) as often as possible. just think about situations and feelings you are scared to admit the reality of. so for example: "if it were true that I was deeply dissatisfied with my job, I would be terrified." this can help you figure out where you are, out of fear, denying the reality of a situation or how you are/feel. it helps you come back into reality and from there solve a situation. If we run with this example of the job, we could say I am terrified of admitting that I am deeply dissatisfied because then I would have to change something. and I am scared of not finding another job/disapointing someone or myself/losing money... but figuring out which truths you are scared of can help you on your journey to changing your life because that can only be done when you are living in reality, not denial. hope this helps!
hi! as I mentioned multiple times in the videos about shadow work and on my blog: you can and should go at your own pacing. there are 14 prompts that you can do on 14 days, it does not mean that the 14 days need to be in succession at all. if you need more time on something or need more rest in-between or more time to integrate, you are more than welcome to take it! as for the part about it being dangerous- I do not believe so, if done properly. each question and prompt has an added element to it that can help you resolve or process whatever you find out. and develop a compassionate and loving outlook on what has been unearthed. and I have written an extensive blog post about what you can do with the information gained, so as to develop compassion and use what you have learned to actually change your life. shadow work is not dangerous. your subconscious is not dangerous, it's simply a place where emotions and thoughts and memories hang out that we are not aware of. and unearthing them can be painful and can be triggering. but with proper preparation and integration after the fact, unearthing these things alone or with a professional alongside, can be incredibly beneficial. it would only be harmful emotionally (as any self-awareness exercise, as meditation, as any spiritual exercise can be) if you do it completely alone, unprepared and without the proper rest and integration afterwards, and completely disregard your own limits and boundaries. listen to your intuition first, always: if you feel it is too much to do 14 days in a row, then please don't! there is never any rush.

But you never need to. I do not recommend one way over the other- please listen to your own intuition when it comes to the speed and timing of your journaling and self-discovery. I’ve been through many videos on this topic and this is the simplest, easiest explanation. Watching this video made everything click end I immediately started thinking of behaviors potentially suppressed from my childhood. Hi Elza 🌻 Stumbled upon this video while I was looking up shadow-work and journalling prompts. I decided to do the exercise and I have completed 9 days as of today (I started on the 20th). What a great exercise! - I learnt of shadow-work, last year, quite unintentionally so I was somewhat familiar with the subject. Your exercise has been the most intentional of all the shadow-work I have done so far. I am loving what is coming up to the surface. I would not be able to see or accept things for what they are or the insights coming in, before but now it feels natural! In the way that I knew this exercise would be difficult but I also knew I was ready to dive in. Thank you! The intro in your video helped too. Shadow-work is tricky but the more and more I undertake it, especially intentionally, I look forward to what I might be able to unearth and dislodge etc. from my systems. Thank you again! So I started doing shadow work recently, and I was wondering what I need to do after journaling , how do I take action towards bettering myself using what I've journaled?
Because I find it difficult to say, "If I catch myself repeating this toxic pattern, I'll stop myself because now I know better" Its not easy for me to do that because after journaling and becoming aware of so many of my unconscious beliefs and patterns, I cant focus on trying to heal and correct so many different things at once.
hi! first of all what I would say is: pick one thing at a time. don't try to do everything at once.
second thing: if there are beliefs you wish to work on that you have uncovered now, then you can use "the work" by Katie Byron to change those beliefs into better ones. the work can be found as a worksheet on her website or you can download an app that will guide you through 10 steps or so which you can use to dismantle your old belief and build a better one. the better one can then be a part of your morning affirmations or something you write down and keep somewhere visible where you will see it each day.
if it's a behavioural pattern you wish to change, I would try to figure out in which situations you engage in this behavior the most. and then focus on catching yourself in these situations. it might take a while or at first only work in retrospect. but catching yourself in retrospect is still amazing because slowly it teaches your brain to catch yourself before you engage in the behavior. you can also give that behaviour or the situations in which it most often occurs a name (e.g. this is my rejecting Richard move or something like that) so your brain has something to hold on to and remember.
thirdly, if it is a behavioural pattern you seem to not be able to deal with on your own- ask people around you that you trust to help you become aware of when you exhibit this pattern when they're around. you can also ask for professional help, always. if it's a very specific pattern you can always try to get books/videos/workshops... on it, inform yourself on it from a psychological standpoint.
fourth: find an alternative reaction/behavior. be very explicit about what you want to replace this pattern with.
lastly. please try to give yourself grace and compassion. behavioural and cognitive patterns take time to change. so don't try everything at once, take it slow, and be compassionate if it takes a while and much practice. you're doing great.

Hello. A couple of years ago, I came across the phrase Shadow Work. I kinda thought I knew how to do it.lol Anyway, this past christmas, I had a pretty bad fall out with my wife. Were separated. A few signals got crossed that resulted in me lashing out by way of text in a pretty horrible way. Its been like a pattern between the two of us. Earlier today, I called and apologized to her and during our conversation she asked if I knew anything about shadow work. It brought the subject back to my memory and I began to think of where ive gotten this dark side if you will about my personality and I want to get this part of me under control. When I got home from work this evening I looked up shadow work on youtube and your video came up. Ive been to your website and downloaded your telegram app and id like to get started. Tomorrow morning when I get up, Ill go through the app and look for the challenge and introduce myself to the rest of the group. Thanks for the video and giving a plain explanation on what shadow work is.

I don't know if I fully get you- so a part of you thinks you're a bad person in some way? you could try to meditate and ask this specific part to clarify what exactly it doesn't like about you and what you should change. and to answer you could try journaling with your non-dominant hand. that's a technique that sometimes works for me. great idea! let me know how it goes if you want. but also, you're allowed to take more time for each prompt if you want. so if you do 1, 5, 11 prompts- do what feels good! you don't need to cram 11 prompts into 11 days if that starts to become too much during the holiday craziness
what do you do when your aware of the shadow, speak it, share it and it doesnt change no matter how much awareness you have
change does not always come from awareness. what you need to change can become apparent from what you now know. you might need to resolve an emotion that comes with some painful knowledge. you might need to change things about your lifestyle, the people in it, thought or behavioural patterns. what specifically needs to change should be apparent based on the knowledge you gain. and so action needs to follow your awareness. and sometimes your shadow also has positive gifts that you can become aware of and use. hope this helps!

How do I fasten the process? I'm ready to do it, I have been suppressing it for a while and I want all of it come out
hi! I totally get the impulse to want to rush the speed at which you're healing- especially maybe if a lot of pain or trauma is involved. however, even if you could, I wouldn't try to do this quickly and get "everything out". shadow work can be very emotional and everything needs time to be processed. and the things you find out via journaling might need further work afterwards outside of journaling as well. changing behavior, thoughts, and emotions can take time. so please don't rush and don't force it. your body and heart have to process every bit of new self awareness and change that you're making. and if you wanna do it thoroughly it's not gonna be quick. give yourself the grace and compassion to go slow but steady instead of burning yourself out. and enjoy yourself too, outside of healing work!
and I can promise you: the better it gets, the better it gets. there is no need to rush.

hi, not necessarily. the shadow is everything that is unconscious to you. that can be memories, emotions, desires, parts of yourself that were repressed... anything really ☺️
I found your Challenge today and felt really emotional about it, especially when you mentioned, that the shadow self is part of our self that was not accepted as a child. I started with the Journaling today (day 1). However, I cannot (yet) connect with my emotions through it. I am writing automatically for pages, that's no problem. But it all comes from my mental side. What am I doing wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this normal? Or part of the shadow, that my mental side was rather accepted than my emotional self?
it's quite normal, especially in the beginning, to connect to the prompts from your mental side. that's how we live a lot of our lives and I think it's easy to step into a cognitive analyser because it helps us keep a bit of distance from our emotions. like you said, it could very well be that your mental side was always accepted, but your emotional side never was (by others and then in turn also yourself). this makes it harder to connect to it. but practice makes perfect. the more you write, the more you will feel safe and your emotions will come up. you can also journal about what you are afraid of when it comes to showing and expressing your emotions. what are the negative consequences you might be expecting? and I would also do lots of grounding meditations, meditative walks, body scans, and maybe yoga. just to help you get into the body and out of the mind. that's just a general practice that might help you connect with your emotions. you can also do a practice that I think teal swan recommended, which is to set a timer every hour or so and to then write down a quick sentence on how you feel. or to just acknowledge how you feel. and in the beginning it might be hard, but it'll get easier with practice and it brings you closer to yourself and your emotional world. lastly, maybe you can also do meditations that help you connect to your heart chakra, sacral, and root chakra. all of these meditations can just be found on TH-cam. hope this helps!

what do u do when ur done filling the shadow work journal..? should I burn it or shred it or tear it?
I would actually keep it so you can reread it and learn from it. or so you can compare it to new entries if you ever journal on the same question again- because it can be useful to see if your answers would change and how you have grown. however: your intuition is most important. so if you feel like burning it or throwing it away or doing whatever else release ritual, you are free to do so. it's your writing, so do with it whatever feels right!
do i only have to do it for these 14 days ? because i want to do it every other day but i’m afraid that after i finish i won’t know where to pick up again so i was going to just do this and be done if that makes sense.
doing it every other day is fine too! it's 14 prompts, but in which time you do them is up to you. so if you want to do it every other day, that's cool. if you want to take multiple days for one prompt, that's cool. the prompts don't necessarily have to do anything with each other, so if you have a break in-between, just pick the next prompt on the list! hope this helps

hey, do you have something specific you don't know how to do? is it journaling in general?
How can I start journal it
What I can write and how
you can start each journal session by reading through the question of the day and then immediately picking up the pen (or opening your laptop) and just writing intuitively whatever comes out. try not to think too much and just write whatever comes to mind. I think you'll find that often times you'll know exactly what to say. if nothing comes to mind you can spend some time meditating and then coming back to the question or picking a different question first. practice helps! and there's no limits to how you write (full sentences, bullet points, drawing...) and what you write- your journal is just for you, so you can write however and whatever you want and feel is best.

Can I do more than one prompt per day?
you can if that feels right to you! I always advise people to not rush through it, to maybe even take multiple days for one prompt. because they can be intense and powerful and it's important to be kind, compassionate, and soft with yourself. and to let the ideas ruminate and blossom. with that being said, value your intuition above anything and everything else. so if it feels like you can and should do multiple prompts per day then go ahead!

How do u find out these things of the past you didn’t really explain you’re just saying do shadow work . How tho ? like what exactly do I write , what’s the practical process I have to do that’s what we need .
hi! the practical process depends on how well connected to your intuition you are. so what you can do is that you meditate first- do whatever meditation tends to connect you to your body and heart, e.g., body scans or simple mindfulness, or maybe binaural beats...
Afterwards, read the question you want to work on and immediately start writing. try not to think too hard and just write whatever comes to mind and heart. write how you feel, what you feel, random thoughts that come out. it doesn't need to make sense at first or fit together. the more often you do this, the more easily you will be able to connect to your intuition and just write automatically. when you feel like you wrote everything that needed to be written, when you feel finished- reread what you wrote and reflect on it again- write how it makes you feel, what thoughts come up...
memories that come up will do so naturally as you think on the question.
I hope this answers your question! there is no right or wrong way to do this. that's why it is hard to give you an answer as to what exactly you are supposed to write. I would have to know you to be able to tell you that. but if you give your mind, if you give your subconscious and your body a chance to express themselves, over time they will do so naturally. which is something that only makes sense when you sit down and actually try to write. and maybe that will feel silly or unnatural at first, but automatic writing and accessing your intuition is a thing to be practiced.

if you find that nothing comes up when you look at a question and you become frustrated: pick another one. or what you can also do is write exactly that: "I feel frustrated, this feels dumb, I don't know what to do or how to answer this. that makes me feel..." and usually something will come up after that, even if it's just a nice emotional release

yes! you can type if you want. I always advise handwriting because it's more personal and helps me connect more easily. but what matters is what comes naturally to you and what you feel gets you closer to yourself

I'm sure you could but I wouldn't advise it. these questions can be emotionally overwhelming or just tiring and I would advise anyone to take really good care of themselves before and after answering the questions. so that takes time. and I would also say that each question has the potential to be journaled on for quite a bit of time or even to be thought about for a few days. so you can do whatever feels right to you- but I would try not to rush through it, but to take my time

hey! what you have to do is fill out the blank (...) as often as possible. just think about situations and feelings you are scared to admit the reality of. so for example: "if it were true that I was deeply dissatisfied with my job, I would be terrified."
this can help you figure out where you are, out of fear, denying the reality of a situation or how you are/feel. it helps you come back into reality and from there solve a situation. If we run with this example of the job, we could say I am terrified of admitting that I am deeply dissatisfied because then I would have to change something. and I am scared of not finding another job/disapointing someone or myself/losing money... but figuring out which truths you are scared of can help you on your journey to changing your life because that can only be done when you are living in reality, not denial. hope this helps!

Doing shadow work for that long straight is dangerous
hi! as I mentioned multiple times in the videos about shadow work and on my blog: you can and should go at your own pacing. there are 14 prompts that you can do on 14 days, it does not mean that the 14 days need to be in succession at all. if you need more time on something or need more rest in-between or more time to integrate, you are more than welcome to take it!
as for the part about it being dangerous- I do not believe so, if done properly. each question and prompt has an added element to it that can help you resolve or process whatever you find out. and develop a compassionate and loving outlook on what has been unearthed.
and I have written an extensive blog post about what you can do with the information gained, so as to develop compassion and use what you have learned to actually change your life.
shadow work is not dangerous. your subconscious is not dangerous, it's simply a place where emotions and thoughts and memories hang out that we are not aware of. and unearthing them can be painful and can be triggering. but with proper preparation and integration after the fact, unearthing these things alone or with a professional alongside, can be incredibly beneficial.
it would only be harmful emotionally (as any self-awareness exercise, as meditation, as any spiritual exercise can be) if you do it completely alone, unprepared and without the proper rest and integration afterwards, and completely disregard your own limits and boundaries.
listen to your intuition first, always: if you feel it is too much to do 14 days in a row, then please don't! there is never any rush.
