      Like someone above mentioned, the dimensions have to be pretty accurate or else the portal won't open when you try to light it.

    You are absolutely right. It's not a "special" kind of rock -- it just has to be any rock that's harder than the steel. When a tiny sliver of steel is chipped off, the carbon in the (high-carbon) steel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere. This reaction produces molecules of CO and CO2 (carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) and releases the excess energy in the form of heat as a visible spark. Once the spark lights on the char-cloth (carbon) the reaction continues. Blowing on it adds more oxygen to the mix.

    Nicely done video:
    1) You've got cred: bandage on your hand, cuts, scrapes & scars on your knuckle. LOL!!!!!
    2) Thx for the knowledge: I knew Mora knives has high carbon blades, but I did not associate it with creating sparks.
    3) I'm now inspired to find "the-right-rocks" in my area. At a minimum, I will keep my eyes open for prospective candidates.

    I'm glad you used naturally occurring flint, not the ferrocerium rods that are sold as "flint." Anyone who has the presence of mind to bring a "flint" and steel firestarter could more easily bring a lighter. In fact, for the cost of the ferrocerium, you could buy many lighters.

    Is flint hard to find in many areas of the World?

      It falls out of the cliffs as they are eroded away. It doesn't wash up.

      Maybe in your part of the world@@CricketsBay the flint I find has definitely been in the sea, the erosion tells, however long ago it was attached to any rock.

    Three questions:
    Is that 1095 steel?
    Would quartz instead of flint do the trick? There's just magnitudes more of it out there.

      You can use the same method with just dry tinder/grass and omit the char cloth but it’s more difficult to get it started

    I made a fire tube tender it works too, just use cotton clothes line in a tube singe the end , pull it back in tube and push it out, hit the spark on it, light the tender and pull the ember back into the tube and put it out.

    as a kid I used 2 pieces of flint to create sparks, now I did read somewhere it is almost impossible to make a fire without a steele striker.. is that some hoax ? because a spark is a spark right ?

      It's possible. Far Northern Bushcraft uses two rocks to create a fire. I can't remember the tinder he uses to catch the spark.

    When making charcloth, make it out of jeans it will be much much tougher almost like paper.

    why do you have to use flint if you say any hard rock will do?
