A player so aggressive, capable of such barely contained fury, that he appears to compel the instrument to submit to him ... More than simply a musician, Townsend is a force of nature.
Love how after years and years, he still performs the essence of his music. Could you imagine anyone else playing Magic Bus, just them and the guitar? No one, but no one, else could do it.
I think that Peter Townshend is one of the most creative men in music. I've followed his career from the start. Who plays like this? Who writes like this? Love the Fender '52 Telecaster. It is the epitome of electric guitar, to my thinking.
He kills me. "If you want to sing along you're welcome to" Vintage Townshend and the playing....fast, clean, creative, no words suffice for the powerful right arm that propels this music.
give me truly a great rhythm guitar player over a great soloist any day. Remember recording this on vhs when it was originally broadcast. I wore the tape out i watched it so much. Great to see it again after so long.
The great thing about Pete is that he recognizes the artistic significance of the "tool" of his trade, and vice versa. This Fender is beautiful, especially in the right hands, BUT can also explode into shards and splinters, again, IF in the right hands. There will never be another Peter Townshend.
This is about the coolest one man, one electric guitar video i've ever seen. Jack White comes very close at times. If his voice doesn't move you, that ripping telecaster wil! I have to watch this almost daily to remind me how cool rock-n-roll guitar can be. With all respect and love, you are a serious bad ass, Pete!
There are only a few guitarists that really nailed doing lead guitar inside of their rhythm playing at the same time i.e. Townshend, Prince, Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Cory Wong. It's such an underated talent. Too many people consider "lead" as melodies and solos and "rhythm" as riffs and chords. The best guitarists mix the two together at the same time
@@joshualessore7652 You missed to mention Robert Johnson, he just was the godfather of all they followed him. No soli, no shmokes, just a 🎸 and some of a wizard at its best.
I finally bought a Fender Telecaster very like this after years of playing a copy. Two years later I still get goosebumps when I glance at it on my wall. And as for when I play it through my 1970s all valve amp...MAGIC!!
....and its supposed to sound like this...! A true master, and he knows it.I get the fuckin chills every time. I often wonder how much greater be,if Moonie and Thunderfingers wouldve lived!!! Ah Salud!
This is the guitar leant to me by Pete Townsend for a gig at Twickenham Polytechnic in 1978 . I was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in the band called THE SKUNKS! I broke this guitar at the show and it cost me a lot of money to get it fixed back up through Petes guitar techs and luthiers! It sounded brilliant especially through a fender amp. I must be the only guitarist that can say I smashed up one ot Petes guitars!! Gerry Lambe xxxxx The Skunks UK 1977
One of the finest exponents of great rhythm guitar playing...Pete has a great natural feel, that's hard to duplicate.. If you like this - check out Drowned - acoustic version from the Secret Policemen's Ball 1979. He has a stunning rhythm right hand techique.
keith young I've seen that Drowned performance. Absolutely remarkable!!! One of my favorite's of his and nobody else compares to Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend.
Just one talented man filling an auditorium with a guitar and his voice. Today's rap singers have nothing on this. So much electronic filler to make up for a weaker sound.
Pete here, Clapton in The Dominoes, etc. There just seems to be something right about the raw, untempered sound of a guitar plugged directly into the front of the amp.
Yeah, OK Pete... I've been working and loving my beautiful 'Tele' for a number of years now and she's NEVER sounded "like this"... clearly, the problem here is that, unlike you, I am not the freakin' Man! "...we all shine on!" -JWL
Love that telecaster sound in rock music. The blonde 52 tele is the icon of tele's just as the 59 les paul is to the les Paul's and the 54 strat is to stratocasters and......love my classic axes, classic bikes, classic cars, classic rock. The best indeed.
thank you for clearing that up...i got a vintage fender book im looking at now and you are spot on my friend. You know much about les pauls? lps and teles are my main axes plus my ESP.
It's true. The tele is the quintessential rock guitar. And it feels so much better than a strat, even with it's contoured body. The tele sits in your lap much easier. The pick up configuration and switch are easier and the neck is nicer to play. Best no frills guitar. And Pete demonstrates it so well.
Damn … talk about a one man band .. how many band members of any band can pull a solo off as well ? Kudos Pete. ( I recall Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day doing "Good Riddance" all alone … but not too many can pull off this solo rock n' roll deal as well as this )
For any new comes here imagine adding a machine cannon drummer, a thunder and lightening bassist and a huge range vocalist to this, raw and awesome on it's own but look up the original.
I would never sing along with Pete unless I was on stage. If I'm in the audience, I'm sitting in silence and absorbing the moment. What I would not give to watcha and listen to him play acoustically in a coffee house. That would be the epitome of amazing.
A player so aggressive, capable of such barely contained fury, that he appears to compel the instrument to submit to him ... More than simply a musician, Townsend is a force of nature.
Yes he Was and Still Is!
Love how after years and years, he still performs the essence of his music. Could you imagine anyone else playing Magic Bus, just them and the guitar? No one, but no one, else could do it.
Amen

I agree…..very unique in writing and performing. None quite like him.
He kills me. "If you want to sing along you're welcome to" Vintage Townshend and the playing....fast, clean, creative, no words suffice for the powerful right arm that propels this music.
my favourite one man singer/electric guitar performance

For many years I've considered the two most under appreciated guitarits as Pete and Robbie Kreiger (the Doors).
Pete. With ya since 1965!
He's not wrong... That's exactly how a Telecaster's meant to sound.
no, it´s not, actually
It should sound like you, in a Telecaster flavour! :o)
Because? .... You know.. Yes... Obviously...
@modestoney
A original 52 telecaster with a 6 saddle bridge? I don’t think so..
the icon of rock n' roll. I remember seeing The Who at the San Jose Civic in 1968. Changed me. Hoo yeah.
GREATEST. OF. ALL. TIME. GOD has a name and it's Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend!!!
There are lots of very talented guitarists in the world, but if I could play like any one of them it would be Pete Townsend
Yesssss!
The look on his face at 3.01 is priceless!
A living, walking, singing, strumming, brilliant remnant of what was known as "The British Invasion."
Another awesome performance from one of the greatest guitarists ever
Love that guitar sound!

A master in his purest state of flow. I’m out ot breath just listening to it. Goes so hard.
Absolutely incredible a pure Legend what a musician!
Rock & roll will never die. I've taken a bus (motorcycle taxi and friends) to see you Pete
Too much levels of EPICNESS!!!!

How could anyone not but love this.. Such rawness and beauty thrown into a whirlpool of pure genius..
pete is showing off here, basically toying with the guitar. ...love or hate, the guy can play.
“Who” wouldn’t love him. Coolest man in Rock I say

Did you notice a name change??? Check this out, Pete Townsend Mandela Effect; th-cam.com/video/XVM-N9uBYEk/w-d-xo.html
Love the tongue in cheek reference to John Hiatt's "this is a perfectly good guitar" .
Pete is the best!
man that dude can play the guitar well ...and while singing at the same time!
Love that performance. So raw 👍
okey, thats the king of all gitar legends.
Intense and stripped down! Love it!
Such An Underrated Guitarist…….He Can Play and You Can Tell He Really Enjoys Playing Guitar…..❤️
Guy at work introduced me to this Version.....amazing!!

Tearing it up on the telecaster great Pete Townsend
50 shades of A. Love it 👍

I.m 70 plus, the Who was a go to, but i never really got how really great he is until i heard him play outside them. Then i saw the light.
11 years later, and Later with Jools Holland is still going strong. Promoting the best in both new and old.... excuse me, classic...... music.
It certainly does sound like a great telecaster. Unmistakeable. Rock n roll
What can you say? PT -one of the greatest giving that Tele the business. Especially love watching him manhandle an acoustic guitar.
love Pete, soundtrack for my early years and today...

This is a Fender Telecaster and it's supposed to sound like this:
Incredible!
truly genius , the emotion he gets out of him is simply amazing
nice,,,,,Pete is awesome.
Great guitarist ..
this is the difference between any guitar player banging on a guitar at home singing whatever song he fancies, Tele or not, and Pete Townsend.
Yeah, pretty much the coolest video on youtube! ..tomorrow I am selling my bus and buying a Fender Telecaster.
Not enough.

Makes me proud I worked at CBS Fender!
I love how he laid down the law as to how a tele is meant to sound lol.
that's about the perfect Tele sound!
that was awesome
The man is pulling off some good stuff here.
This is why I built my own Tele from authentic Fender parts. Awesome tone.
BEAUTIFUL 🎸
The sound of that tele 😍 Wow
LUV YA PETE!!!!!!!
Love me some Pete Townshend....;-))
I've listened to this maybe a hundred times. . Pete would say I must have a lot of time on my hands. Not too shabby though.
More claves!
The best video on TH-cam
Townshend and a Tele. Great stuff.
Pete is such a great rhythm player
Pete rules !
Mindblowing version, I tried this piece so often, but this is absolutely top!!
It's funny that he asks the crowd to sing along but no one is singing. They are just awestruck that their all witnessing brilliance in the making....
the man knows his way around a guitar
this the reason why i want a tele!
Ja .ja. Mira como toco !!Bestial !!!
for you guitar players out there,,, study this video. Pete toys with the song, his guitar work is incredible.
Still one of the best Right Hands
Brilliant.
When people ask why I play a tele, this is the best reason I could give.

Goes to a gig, Brings a $40,000 guitar. Yeah that's right, like a boss.
Provenance. It's called provenance.
LEGEND!!!
Now that's how you play a Fender!!
Good god.. Rock and roll!

When Pete plays solo like this, and loses himself, the rhythm, the attack, following the music, it's the clearest evidence of his genius.
Pete is so 😎 cool !
awsome
That awkward moment when the crowd start to clap... and they have no idea on their timing!
They never do. Ah well.
I'm sure I've seen a show where Pete actually stopped his performance to say "Could you please stop clapping, you're ruining the performance"
