Put vortec heads & fuel injection on that, BEAST!
Yess, I LOVE THAT ENGINE RUN STAND,.... What an EXCELLENT, idea, brother!! ✌❤💯
I like to take the SBC 400(s) & drill the water jackets on 305 heads (works on 350 or 400 SBC) THEN, put 202 valves in your 305 heads & this raises the compression through the, ROOF! It makes each cylinder 1/4 inch, smaller... just examine the chambers in your 350/400, head(s) & you can visually see, CLEARLY, "how" & "why." I've built 2 SBC 400s this way, & BOTH TIMES I couldn't advance the timing too high due to sparkknock... buttt,.... I could put good gas in it/them with an RV cam & just a little bit of ADVANCE on the timing. I had a one wheel peel with this setup in a LWB 73 full size C10 with 15 X 10 tires & wheels on the, rear & that thing would do cookies on dry pavement, NO PROBLEM. I had another one built the same & I put it in a 1980, Monte Carlo. That thing would go FULL RETARD from a 30 MPH, "punch", *again* on dry black top. You could be rolling along at 30/35 MPH & mash the accelerator to the floor & it would commence to recycling tires, in a straight path/driving through the middle of, Guthrie, Ky... "No Problem."
Ive had guys telling me that 305 heads won't party well on a 350/400 SBC? Well,... get you a 1/4" drill bit & a 3/8" drill bit. A 350 or a 400 head gasket? Lay said head gasket on your 305 head(s) & you can CLEARLY see where to punch/drill your big/little holes to allow coolant/water to flow through your, heads... it's no problem, at all.. I had a friend who used a 350 rather than a 400 (I used a 400 small block.) He put his in a 1988 4 door Caprice, classic & those 305 heads made his 350 go FULL RETARD in his big body, Caprice, as well. It is a MUST that you drill those holes out, however... otherwise water/coolant WILL NOT CIRCULATE through your cylinder heads. The 350/400 DESPERATELY "need" the extra cooing characteristics you will achieve in drilling those (I I remember correctly) "I think" there were to TWO 3/8" holes, as well as, TWO 1/4" holes per head? One diameter will be on, TOP. The other diameter will be on, bottom. Just look at your 350/400 gasket up against the bottom side of your 305 heads & with the common sense found in your common pizz ant? It is EASILY figured put. Just "punch" your head(s) through your new gasket(s) into your head(s) & you can easily see where to drill which hole(s) based entirely upon what you are looking at with your gasket held up against your 305, head(s.)
The chambers are 1/4" smaller in each bore, due to the lack of machine work in stock 305, cylinder heads. In fact, I just used stock 305 heads in the past & NEVER had a moment(s), problem. I also do not recommend "EVER" to reuse cylinder head, bolts. The piece of mind (to me) is worth the 50 bucks. *shrugs*
If not ONLY because MOST folks won't go to that, extreme, on an old school chevy, engine. It's likely not required on a SBC but when building a 4.3 u put new timing cover, new head bolts, & in my experience? Those baztards usually need a flexplate and/or a, starter, by the time they need rebuilt. Mine had broken both motor mounts, the CPI, the starter, & the flexplate by the time I had gathered enough parts to go through the thing. (Of course, I bought it NOT RUNNING/neglected, major big time.
    ✌❤💯

    Much better quality and precision.
