    my soon to be 8 year old son has been begging for a bearded dragon after holding a baby beardie and falling in love with it. This sounds like SO MUCH WORK. Thanks for all the info. I'm going to have him wait until he's older and can be more responsible for its daily care and feedings. I can't believe you even have to feed the food. Very admirable for you to do so much work.

      I realize this comment is from a year ago, and you might have gotten a Beardie.... But for a child, I'd recommend adopting an adult dragon. They are still a lot of work, but not at all as much work as a baby... They also don't depend on proper care and feedings for proper growth since they are already grown.

    I am from Australia and as a kid my friend's mother loved Shingleback lizards so much she had over 20 living with them they didn't have enclosure for them so the lizards would walk around the house, her mother would take them outside to get some sun, if you saw her mother outside in the garden there was always lizards with her, us kids called her The Lizard Lady.

    I am so grateful to have found this video! I just brought my baby beardie home and I thought I was prepared but NOPE! I thought he liked me, I pet his head and he closes his eyes but then I read it means he’s scared. I want him to be happy and feel so so safe with me.

      i don’t think it means he’s scared, just a bit uncomfortable. a lot of beardies don’t like head petting, mine doesn’t. try stroking the torso instead :)

    Yes!thank you so much for bringing up shelf liners. I have a full grown beardie that I have had for a year now, and we tried a lot of different kinds of substrates until we discovered shelf liners while shopping around. Nobody had ever recommended them and now me and my beardie love the cheap,safe and just all around great option😄 we also had MASIVE issues with crickets getting underneath substrate, and you can stick the shelf liners down around the edges and change ....maybe every 2 to 3 months. Also has easy clean up! Would recommend 👌

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shelf liner releases fumes when heated and doesn’t offer any burrowing enrichment, which is very important for beardies. I strongly recommend switching to a suitable loose substrate. A deep layer of a soil/playsand/clay mix is ideal :)

    • @wanderingoldsoul420
      @wanderingoldsoul420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightinggale6470 That is not ideal for smaller beardies because it has a risk of respiration.

      @@wanderingoldsoul420 if you mean impaction: Impaction is caused by improper husbandry, not loose substrate. As long as their husbandry is correct (temps/heating, hydration, etc.) a healthy animal will be able to pass loose sub no problem. Hey, I got handed down a bunch of stuff for my bearded dragon and I thought I checked everything but my dumb *ss forgot to check dates on the supplements. I've stopped giving it to him for today (getting fresh stuff tomorrow) but do you think it'll affect him at all with it being out of date?
    He's had two rounds of insects with them and yesterday's fruit and veg with it mixed in as well. It expired late last year. I've looked it up and people don't seem to think anything bad will happen but I don't know if they have reptiles themselves or what their experience is so.. I don't know I figured I'd give this a shot and see if you've got any advice 'cause you have reptiles and you're informative while also making sense and kinda keeping it simple which is super useful and awesome.

      You probably just want to feed. The bugs The The first week But if you have to leave maybe leave a tiny salad for them to eat a snack

    • @HaruDoneYet
      @HaruDoneYet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You put a salad bowl down first, then leave it for them to pick and or glare at throughout the day, and remove it when meal times are over.
      Same protocol for adults, so in the morning put a salad out, leave it, and late afternoon remove it.
      Dust all the bugs for baby dragons. They're gonna need the calcium for bone growth.
      Once they get older you can space out how often you dust depending on age/size.

    Can you do a video on supplementing juvenile bearded dragons specifically and why each supplement is important/what it does?

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Calcium is necessary for the health of their bones (and to prevent MBD). Multivitamins are also necessary for their health. Supplements should be without d3 since they’ll get all the d3 they need from their UVB. Reptifiles has a good care guide with more information.

    I love your videos. I have raised many different types of lizards. I have raised green Iguanas, anoles, collard lizard, Sudan plated lizard, and a few other kinds.
    So I decided to try my hand at beardie dragons. I bought a baby a few days ago. I have it in a 40 gallon tank with heat and uvb/a. I live in a colder climate so I am using a space heater to raise the temps for night until the ceramic bulbs come.
    So I have a question. My baby beardie is eating 10-15 little crickets a day. I am doing feedings three times a day. It is also pooping a lot. Is this good enough? I have noticed the last few days I have had it, it is eating more and more. It actually ate watercress and dandelion greens on its own.
    I also hand feed it bugs. I want to help the lizard to learn to trust me. Thanks for all your research. I also ordered Dubai roaches from Dubai dude and I used Elle is the checkout code.

      They don’t offer any burrowing enrichment unfortunately, which is extremely beneficial for beardies. A suitable loose substrate mix is best.

      That's awesome! 😊
      You can get it at any hardware store. And usually if you find their clearance section, they have them for less than $1 each
      You will also usually either need the hardware store to cut the tile (so make sure to get the measurements) or you'll have to cut it.

      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just letting you know: tile isn’t a good substrate, at least not for the whole substrate. Burrowing enrichment is extremely important for beardies, so a deep layer of a suitable loose substrate (a soil/sand/clay mix) is best for them. 100% tile could also be hard on their joints. You could perhaps do half tile, half loose.

    My parents bought calcium sand even tho I told them not to. They got Bc the worker said that calcium sand is good for the bearded dragon and they trusted her over me. But luckily was had left over tile from awhile back. So I put tile over the sand. It covered most the sand but there was a little of sand that stuck out so I used sticks, rocks, etc to cover that but if sand as best I could

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tile isn’t a good substrate, it’s bad for their joints and doesn’t provide the burrowing enrichment they need to thrive. A soil/playsand/clay mix is best.

      @SimplyGhosted 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightinggale6470 I know, I heard about that, but I’m just trying to make the little but of resources I have work. It’s better then just leaving calcium sand though. I do want to get play sand eventually tho

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SimplyGhosted when you’re able to switch to a good loose substrate, I don’t recommend using playsand on its own. It doesn’t hold their burrows and can be hard on their joints (since it’s very loose on its own). A soil/playsand/clay mix would be ideal

    I recently got a baby red bearded dragon and I want to make sure he is the healthiest he can be. I’ve watched so many videos, read articles, studies charts, but I still have so many questions. My main worry is if my beardy is getting the perfect amount of d3 and calcium. I’ve heard some people say I need a lot of d3 and some people say if my uvb light is good enough then I shouldn’t need much but it all seems kinda vague. I don’t know how good my uvb light is since the only thing it says on the box is uvb 10.0. You’re videos have been awesome so far but I’m still a little confused if I’m doing this all right. The pet store said I’m doing great with him but from what articles and you tubers say I feel like I’m missing a lot.

    • @moonlark5039
      @moonlark5039 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should use supplements without d3. As long as you use the right UVB bulb your dragon will be able to produce the d3 they need. The care guide on the website reptifiles has more information.

    Do you recommend any type of film to put on the glass of the terrarium? I think on the sides he's seeing his reflection and getting startled? I have a backing for the rear of the tank.

    Baby bearded dragons do well on substrate and it's natural for them. I use aquatic soil used for outdoor ponds (NOT SAND) and mixed it with coir. It's easy to keep clean as their poop hardens very quickly and easy to remove. Please keep beardies in a natural environment and not fake grass or tiles

    • @KillerofGods
      @KillerofGods 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wicken wicked reptiles keeps his in 50% play sand, 50% coconut coir.
      Just whatever you do, make sure it is play sand and not the stuff used in building. The former is loose even when wet the later clumps up.
      Plus you don't HAVE to feed them in their enclosure. You can simply feed them in a separate tub and sand down the bottom of the tub so they can have more traction. Makes it easier taking out one bearded dragon vs a dozen crickets.
      But I am for natural substrates as well
