  • We build a Joel Salatin style chicken tractor for our upcoming meat chickens. This chicken tractor is 8'x8' instead of the Salatin 12'x12' to make it easier to move and spread the chickens out a more.
Plans will be available soon on an upcoming build video.

Love this idea for the chickens! Ray has researched this concept a couple years back and we’d totally do this should we have the opportunity with land and so forth. Can’t wait to see how it works out for you guys. 🐓

Looks like a popular style of chicken tractor. Salazin i'm sure has a ton of followers. Al Lumnah of Lumnah Acres follows him as well. 😁😁😁

Nice Build, very clean final product. I know people use what they have, but some people use questionable lumber and they appear like they'll fall apart after a bad rain.

Thanks! I've seen the same. I want these to last at least a few years. I have no problem using reclaimed lumber as long as it is still in good shape.

Just a suggestion, since you're making something that you'll be moving around, if you make half lap joints on the corners of those 2x2 frames and screw down through the cross grain, and maybe even use glue also, instead of screwing into the end grain, the frames will be sturdier and less likely to rack and pull the screws out from repeated moving. I guess the wire mesh and corrugated steel help stiffen everything up but I'd still be tempted to do the half lap joints. Otherwise, great build.

Yes, half lap joints would be stronger but that is far more work than this was. Glue might help but couldn't find mine in my boxes. I doubt this will come apart with three 3" screws in each joint. It won't have any weight on it while moving. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Wooden corner braces would help too if needed.

Keep an eye on those birds as they grow. General recommendation for minimum square feet per bird is around 1.5. That would be around 42 or 43 birds in your 8x8.

Correct. We plan to run three of these since we have more birds coming so we will only run 35 or so in each one. It could hold up to 50 but the last week you would probably have to move twice a day.

How much did it cost you?

It was about $80 for the lumber and the hardware cloth. I had the screws, the hinges and the staples. The metal roofing was the most expensive part at $32 a sheet and I needed just over three sheets so had to buy four. So total all in I have about $215 in it.
