Charles was one of our volunteers for this knife defense social experiment. Subscribe to my channel : / @nickdrossos .
With him, we conducted a play-by-play on how you should react if ever someone came at you with a knife.
First of all, if your opponent approaches you closely, you might not be able to run away from him. Especially if he is carrying a knife, it is life threatening and could kill you in a close range. So, you might have no other choice but to defend yourself.
For instance, when an attacker comes near you with a knife intent on harming or killing you, your first reaction should be to put your hands up to protect your centerline. Your stance should be neutral, passive. You have to try your best to not panic and to not show your fear to your opponent.
If he begins approaching and tries to hurt you, you need to trap the knife that is in his hand. Once you trap the knife, you have to keep your hands on it while striking him back using your hands, elbows, or even your legs.
If you can't trap the knife and he's slashing at you, strike him back with some low line kicks while parrying the knife. Get him to move back, if you strike well enough he might even lose his balance and you will have the upper hand. Your objective should be to trap the knife as quickly as possible though, and cause enough damage that allows you to escape the situation.
Let's say you have trapped the knife, and your opponent manages to switch the knife into his other hand. You must follow and be aware of the knife and where it is going, so you can trap it and then begin striking him.
Having said that, you need to be aware and focus on your attacker's energy and movements, and where that knife is being aimed at so you don't get badly hurt. Focus on trapping the knife, following its movements, and causing just enough damage that gives you time to get out and make it out alive.
    Your comments are always appreciated.
    Stay Safe & Stand Strong,
    Nick Drossos

Cool social experiment. But just some thoughts:
    1. Knife attacks are usually done through stabbing (normal grip or ice pick grip). Slashing? Not so much. Not enough length.
    2. A stab has to REACH you. Immediately going on a trapping mindset may not be the best move. I'd rather be mindful of the range and environment. And i'd parry/slap the attacking hand if he enters my range.
    3. In a knife fight, the chance of you getting cut is very high. It's injury vs survival. NOT survival vs getting out squeaky clean.
    4. In relation to #2, having a "don't-touch-me" mindset is better. Cause the perp won't get a chance to grab you.
    5. Again in relation to #2, a knife attack will most likely be done straightforwardly. Moving away from the attacker's centerline (while parryinn for example) may create enough space for you to...whatever. I'd push and run.
    Here's a potato.;p
Just some thoughts. Not an expert. Just a fan. Keep-up the great vids nick.
    Mabuhay ka.

I'd like to see the instructor wearing a white shirt, and the knife being covered in red paint so when the knife strikes the shirt it'll leave a print. Then once he's wearing the shirt i want to see Vasil attack the instructor or get a stranger to try and attack the instructor and lets see if these techniques actually work, because im having doubts.

You beat me to it. Yes, exactly true. The reality is, in a knife fight you will get cut maybe even stabbed. The adrenaline rush will help and you probably won't notice until you've gotten away or once the attacker (hopefully) runs off when they realize your too much effort for a minimal payout.

Idk if you have thought bout this but the best thing to do is to create distance between you and the attacker. The greater the distance the better result of defense. And then there are other forward steps to do but I usually create distance if the attacker was a blade or close quarters weapon.

I was always taught to keep my palms facing towards me and not to expose major arteries below the elbow. However, this is just for the parries (SP). I think this is a very good video to show the average man or woman what to do when cornered. Also... if he wants your bike or wallet and the attacker has a knife... give him what he wants.

Hello Nick. I've been training Kenpo Karate for some years now. And i have a question. - I've seen many of your videoes today now and what you doing is very realistic, not just ¨Do that and do that, you good without actually playing the situation¨. Good job. - Well my question is, why don't you advice to kick the attacker in the groint in some of the selfdefense? Most of our work in Kenpo is kicking to the groint, and it works very good. ( i can say that from a real situation i had with 2 guys in the street and it helped me for real ) Thanks, and sorry for bad English but, i hope you understand most of it and the point of it. :-)

Context is very important. It's a little silly to assume some random person would be suddenly attacked by a person who shows a knife, threatens, and then attacks with seemingly no motive. This scenario could happen of course but this context is extremely rare compared to a situation where the attacker is seeking money for drugs or has a beef with the victim, etc. Even then, it's much more likely that a criminal will select a apparent easy victim like a small woman etc. in that case. Most self defense experts I know who have been in multiple knife attacks (note I didn't say knife "fights") recommend moving in as soon as possible. Yes control the knife if you can and use strikes, but continuing to stay at dueling distance is extremely dangerous. That said, everything about getting attacked with a knife is dangerous. I respect Nick for doing these social experiment videos, just happen to differ a little but in some tactics for the larger approach.

Nick on this one I have to disagree on the trap , in a real fight Vassil is pumped out of his head , I am nervous the chances are his stabbing upwards move are going to pass through my attempt of trap with both hands , on the other hand if you try a block with your left forearm against his wrist and throwing your belly back , while with your right hand you hold your left wrist , that can keep you safe from serious injuries until he slows down and and can get a elbow lock.
Its easy for you to trap an attacker with both hands , you have over 20 years fighting, you did clubs , no way someone with no fighting experience in a real life attack will stop a full force upwards knife attack to the belly

you know what'll get u killed?! thinking too much...or doing nothing. i think this brotha did well for not wanting to even do this out the gate. if u cant run or the attacker comes at u like a crazed lunatic,as they always do,u gotta handle bizness, period! They're not gonna come at u 1..2...3 slash ,step, mike janich style(he's good,but...) lets be honest, being AWARE and AWAKE trumps all.
